Last week this guy was still playing in challenger, now he has a title after beating 3 top players. Life really could be changing real quick.
Didn't even make the main draw of the challenger as well! Lost first round of qualies
I hope so; he seems like a good guy, and I really like the variety in his game!
And no help from the draw either, he played and beat the top three seeds to get there. Just an amazing story.
So many amazing players in the challengers who just need some confidence that they can play in the top 100. Karatsev was a great example! I'm sure we will be seeing Van Rijthoven around :)
he will lost in first round at next Challenger
He almost bageled the upcoming world number one. Insane week for Tim, well done! Get this man a Wimbledon wild card, he earned it!
He gave him a breadstick instead.😂🤣
he might not even need one. he can climb up to pos 111 and with the exlusion of russian players maybe 106. so that might just be maindraw
Probably the world number 45 on grass though in reality
Medvdev (sorry if I misspelled that) was tanking in the last set
@@KD-ix8le Maybe having his girl friend bets big on him losing? Hey, not allowed to play Wimbledon, may need to make money somewhere else!
that's an insane feat, to go from not having a win on the ATP tour to beating a top 20 player, to beating a top 10 player, to beating the guy who's going to become world no. 1 tomorrow, quite convincingly. van Rijthoven's going to be good on the grass if he keeps playing the way he has this week.
Weakest era of all time.
Congratulations to the classy Champion
@@masters.1000 Clueless. Far better era than previous eras.
@@masters.1000 what??? Shenanigans
"Going to be good on grass"??? Umm..
Get this man a wildcard for Wimbledon already !
Yes!!!!!
@Santiago canudas uuuuuh he's usually playing on the challenger tour and afaik financial dotations are still on for Wimbledon and would be huge for him
Already got it
@Santiago canudas So he's not interested in making money? Getting bigger sponsorship if he does well, he's only interested in points? Do you see how dumb you sound?
@Santiago canudas could get a lot of money if he wins a few rounds at wimbledon. Probably needs it at this stage of his career
This guy is a tricky player. He gives his opponents different looks and spins, and he can return very well. What a turn of events. Congrats!
@Rafa undisputed Goat calm down dear🤣
He seems to move in slow motion and still covers the court perfectly. Really nice and clean strokes! A pleasure to watch!
@Rafa undisputed Goat Ok just shut up
He puts the wild into wildcard. Well done to him.
Nice one.
I like this Van Rijthoven guy, his game is easy on the eye, looks effortless and he uses old grass court tricks!
Medvedev on the other end seems to suffer from a mental breakdown since his loss at the AO final, he's been the shadow of himself, a bit like Tsitsipas since the 2021 RG final!
Part of me wonders if Zverev will play the same way after he returns from injury.
@@henryshear5510 That injury alone will likely impact his play regardless of his mental state.
@@henryshear5510 tbh I think Zverev will welcome an excuse to never perform at same level again
Since the Russian invasion, Medvedev has been pathetic
Great description "easy on the eye". Fun to watch.
Amazing fairy tale of a story, brought tears...also the great sportsmanship shown by Meddy at the net. Well deserved win!
This man has lovely strokes, so elegant! hope Meddy will be back on his usual level soon tho, big congratz to Ritjhoven, that was some Federer-like action!
I thought Federer-like too!
I think he has the same fluid style, just not quite as fast.
Exactly what I thought. Didn't have the guts to say anything tho🤫
@@imalwaysright Same here...it looks like Fedex's style...
A bit. Federer at his age was super aggressive playing attacking games all the time.
Didn't expect this moment to come this quickly. I've been watching Tim for about the last 18 months and have watched him grow tremendously. In the offseason he really improved in first serve and conditioning, which has had a profound effect on his playing ability. Somewhere between the start of this season and now, he improved his shot selection, which we all saw kept everyone on their toes this week. He had that advantage of being unknown how to play against, but we can say everyone will now have to do their homework before playing him. Well done Tim, it has been a pleasure watching you develop as a player and I look forward to seeing how far you can go.
Your job is to watch tennis all day ?
This guy looks strong as a rock, humble and great one handed backhand, now we will keep our eyes on him ,shall we ?
No
You sound like a person from the 1950’s
Yes we shall otherwise we shan't know how strong he really is.
Look at his rock 5:29
@@kain208 Always thought the tennis balls in their pockets might lead to misunderstandings.
Great serve, forehand, backhand, soft touch and calm demeanour. A star is born!
Very classy and effortless strokes by van Rijthoven, really nice to watch. Congrats!! Hope to see more from him
What makes this more impressive is not only did he get his first ATP wins in the tournament, he had never even played on grass in Futures, Challengers or ATP Tour prior to 2022.
Congrats Tim ! Its good to see one handed backhand player !
I feel like Medvedev is still suffering some effects from the Australian Open loss. Hasn't been the same since that defeat. Congratulations to Tim. Wimbledon wildcard maybe?
The political situation has also been very devastating. Imagine you dont even know how long you will be allowed to play. He was banned from Wimbledon and we dont know how the US Open and the Australian Open will react. We also dont know how long he will be banned. His social media is full of xenophobic hate messages, since the war broke out. I bet its a desastrous year for him.
Right.
I think he is in some kind of trauma!!
@@solarisxyz3405 This. Lowkey feel bad for the guy - he's made his stance on the war very clear and still gets hate for being Russian.
It would affect you, to have lost a 2-0 set advantage and going great guns in the third with a triple BP and you take none of them..it would sow doubts in you, i question this second generation for some time, i think a match he should have seized in three straight sets and it would have had major implications and instead....
Nice excuse. He lost because he played bad, even worse than yesterday
Wow. This was totally unexpected and that too on the ATP Tour. Such a marvelous feat.
Who would have thought this guy could win this tournament and destroy Medvedev, great backhand, great slice and drop shot.
Absolutely awesome! incredible! very quiet and composure there was no rash no fear nothing just taking his time to hit good shot and good slices! love him
@Rafa undisputed Goat Federer's dad is coming to stop him hahahaha
@Rafa undisputed Goat Can RUclips not block this guy's account?
@Rafa undisputed Goat almost.
Rijthoven taking the trophy after beating Auger and Medvedev is probably the biggest surprise in ATP this season.
Well played Tim.. always a great place to win at home... 2nd set completely dominated..
Classic strokes haven’t gone anywhere just less explored. Looked better than Tsitsipas’ one handed backcourt game.
*is better than Tsitsipas’ one handed backcourt game
I am pleased to see am the only that noticed his classic style of play. And he reminds me of Becker.
@@Jeremy-600 his backhand is classical and with his height, he will be able to absorb the power from the power players.
His game looks suited for grass. Nice one handed backhand.
yes a classic player and pleasure to watch .. i hope he goes far in Wimbledon
Unbelievable grass court tennis skills and instincts from Tim. He plays with the confidence of a grass court veteran.
Just hope he displays the same amount of confidence against Djokovic and Nadal if he does face either of them.
Backhand reminds me of Richard krajicek. Also plays similar block returns like Richard used to do. It’s so refreshing to see old school grass court tennis being played. I hope he gets. WC into Wimbledon and perhaps puts in a good performance. Who knows he might win like richard did in 96
The rankings would be so much different if the grass court season was about a month longer. Great tournament!!
He plays classic tennis 🎾. Examples like Jimmy, John, Becker, Borg, etc. All the past legends. Before it became a power game.
definitely reminded me of some techniques and shots Federer produces. And then it also feels like nostalgia as you said. Brilliant game and we should be hearing more from him the next few months and years, hoping he can stay injury free now
So slicing the ball randomly is considered brilliant ?🙄 ....these random challenger players are so low lvl it takes mede by surprise nothing else.
@@harryp3804 you're just bugging lol but yeah the slices this week were brilliant
@@abcxyz123 I play tennis at a low lvl .... I hate to play these silcers and dicers ....trust me no1 likes playing them its really low lvl shyte this guy's not really getting anywhere
@@harryp3804 that's because the slicers at low level do it in an inferior manner, but can have success with it at that level. At a higher level you'll see the beauty of it, I hope. Go watch some local good tennis matches, maybe someone with talent can show you the use and beauty of it.
What an amazing and healthy surprise. Tennis needs this. So glad for the Netherlands!
Dropshots, Serve, backhand , slices , returns, composure. As I’ve seen today if they told me he is a top 30 player I would believe them. Make tennis great again!
Medvedev said play like a top 10 i hope will continue with his tennis remember federer in any momments
Tim plays his matches on the challenger tour where multiple times a month he enters a tournament trying to win one, which after years of trying hasnt happened yet. He then recieved a wildcard to this tournament because of his sponsor where he beats multiple world class players and does what he was unable to do one level lower.. Winning a tournament. Just shows you once again the depth of the mens tour and how many fantastic players are playing the 2nd tier of tennis losing money every week hoping one day to make a breakthrough like Tim has done this week..
so tennis probably needs a reform
@@geol5448 Exactly, it's really embarrassing for a sport this big to see just the top 100 players get by financially, while the field is so close in level. Look at football. I imagine the top 1000 players on the globe are making way more money than average.
@@iamNathanGreen bro, u can't compare team sports to individual sports. period.
@@iamNathanGreen In soccer, even bench sitters in a team in the bottom of some Europe nation's main league earn more than the #200 player in tennis.
@@godinhumanform1594 You can. You can, for instance, compare which percentage of participants can live on the sport. The answer is important, regardless of the explanations. Yes, tennis needs reforming. I daresay none of the Big 3 would have been quite as successful as they were if they had had to deal with 1000 or 10.000 well-trained, financially stable, fully tennis-focussed opponents instead of just 100 to 200.
Would love to see more grass court tourneys.
Know how expensive it is to maintain this, but can’t deny how fun it is to watch old school tennis. Medvedev definitely had problems adjusting to the surface. But variety of surface gives some of these other players a chance.
1:27 The crowd literally sounded like the Wii Sports crowd right here lol
What a beautiful old scool tennis-player. Especially backhand full power, straight ahead. My Lordy Lord.
He’s talented for sure. We will see more of him.
Beautiful story. Congratulations, Tim. Wishing you happiness and more success ahead 👍🏽🥳💯🙏🏽
When I saw him against FAA i was shocked. Not surprised he beat medvedev
Those are some beautiful slice shots!
I hope this guy gets a Wimbledon Wildcard. What an incredible feat he’s achieved. Must be one of the biggest upsets ever in terms of tournament champions.
Mark Edmondson, ranked 212th at the time defeated John Newcombe in a gale-force wind storm to win the 1976 Australian Open.
@@binkyxz3 Why are you telling me this random fact? If you’re going to say “it’s a bigger upset than this one,” then I’ll remind you that I described Van Rijthoven’s win as ONE OF the biggest upsets ever.
@@falks941 Don think he even needs a wildcard now. Ranked 102 with all the Russians, Belarussians, Zverev, Federer + more not playing, so should go straight into the main draw
@@nostalgia2458 Ah true. I forgot how much this tournament would do for his ranking.
@@falks941 Chill out. i was just adding historical context your "upset" line. No offense stated and none intended.
I love this style of tennis from Rijthoven. People often underestimate the power of spin and the slice. They always go for power.
I found there is a similarity in the way TVR playing and Fed's. He doesn't look rush under pressure. Congrat to Tim R.. Your future is looking bright. Love your backhand.
He embodies Federer's game quite well with all the slices and dropshots he makes
The drop shots & the slice played him were so marginal on the net yet casually played, loved watching it.
have you ever seen Becker play?
@@henrypacquette1489 No😅
That is what makes tennis so fantastic. The game is missing fast-surface specialists. Without Federer, grass-season is any attacker's to take.
Nice all court game. Does a lot of different shots with one handed backhand, slice, topspin, flat. Think this victory will put him at 102 which should get him into Wimbledon. Would like to see him there.
Receive wildcard play in Wimbledon i hope not play play with novak rafa casper ruud yes
A shocker! Congrats, Tim!
That zoomed in camera-shot when he lies down on the grass, in disbelief after winning: "Yup, he's got big balls in those shorts, alright."
weren't they just tennis balls?
He was excited to win the tournament.
Reprobate. Go watch women's tennis since you want to be one .
That's the banana he forgot to eat at the end of the 1st set.
Hung like a horse
He hits the ball so cleanly with great spin & work on the ball!
Are we witnessing the arrival of a new legend. These highlights are incredible 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Admire him since he knows how to use his dropshot and saw his backhand underspin w/ sidespin. Congrats!
Wow blown away by TVR's silky smooth strokes with easy power. He's arrived!
Unbelievable. Great looking game. Hope he continues to improve and have more success. Very likable player.
Wow, power combined with variety...that's how it's done, well done Tim.
Van Rijthoven cleverly using the standard anti Medvedev tactics that others like Nadal and Thiem have used against him to great success in the past. Slicing his backhand and making the talk man bend down low, out of his comfort zone where he can't generate any pace. A great example of intelligent tennis playing, exploiting an opponent's weaknesses.
Medvedev and also Zverev are super 1 dimensional
Medvedev apparently told Van Rijthoven after the match that he hated his backhand slices, not smart to give away I guess😅
Crazyness! Now I'm inspired to join the ATP Tour 😅
Hes plays chill and tricky ... and amazing accurasy ball..and also good serv what a title... congrat
This is a huge victory from Tim. The way in which he played to defeat Medvedev was amazing, specially in the second set where the dutch guy imposed the conditions and dominated seriously for reaching the title.
Hope he gets the possibility to be in Wimbledon draw, because really deserves it after his insane performances in this tournament 👈 🇬🇧 💪 🎾 🇳🇱
Congratulations! What a week for this young player ! hope he will have the chance to win more titles!
So nostalgic and reminiscent of what tennis used to be before ATP started slowing down the surfaces, making them basically all the same, causing the disappearing of net play amd turning tennis in a marathon ball bashing sport. Well done 👏 no wonder such a breakout happened on Rosmalen grass courts
I was impressed how comfortable van rijthoven was in the baseline rallies with Medvedev in the first set and even played some dropshots. Second set was just strangely subdued from Medvedev.
Medvedev was in shock how this Tim guy was handling his arsenal during the 1st set.
@@oivie1332 that's what Daniil said yes. But still, he's normally quite the fighter, i have seen medvedev serve much more dominantly. And there was a medical for a nose bleed.
I love when a player has a good streak on grass, it's such a dangerous surface for the complacent/players who are not as good as they are on other surfaces. let's hope he's able to go far at Wimbledon
Excelente!!! Reúne muchas condiciones... falta conocer la mental frente a una suerte adversa pero su calidad de juego... físico.. fuerza.. revés a una sola mano... velocidad y buen saque
le depara mucho futuro
Mucha suerte!!!!
WOW. Congrats, Mr. van Rijthoven. Not only did you beat my favorite player, but you did it in style and with class and composure. I'll be keeping an eye out for you at Wimbledon. Wild card!
Thats quite special and he will remember it his whole life. Congratulations :-)
ABSOLUTELY WOW. I HAVE NO WORDS.
Grass court tennis is so good to watch..
Way to go van Rijthoven! That's some real delicate touch. On a side note, I'm kinda old school when it comes to trophies. It should not be a plate (traditionally means 2nd place) or plastic or look like it could be bought at any gift shop. It should look like something difficult to obtain.
New ranking of 106, up 99 places from last week!
Great win young man!....im sure there will be lots more of you coming up in the future!..
love to see stories like this one!!
His game is truly suited for grass. I wonder how he would fair on hard and clay? It reminds me a bit of Ash Barty but for a guy. His slice is truly a weapon on grass. He uses so many variations of spin that his opponents can’t seem to lock in rhythmically.
So impressive! Perfect skills for grass court. Hope he can continue in this form until Wimbledon.
A big guy with a very soft hand. It was a genuine pleasure to watch him play. 👌🏻
this guy has a DEADLY slice, hope he keeps improving
What this match shows, more than anything else, is that top level sport is really about what's going on between the ears.
Technically, this Dutch guy is as good as any I've seen; he just needs to believe it and the results will follow.
He is designed for grass, his playing style is very nice to watch! What an incredible story for this man!
Love his game
So great to see another single back hander winning. It's so rare these days...
Inspirational for all! Congrats Tim - for sure you spent countless hours training on grass in Holland and well done young man!! 🙏🎾
I doubt it as there are maybe only 1 or 2 grass court clubs left in Holland, Rosmalen is 1 and I think Scheveningen still has grass, but may be gone now also. Not many hardcourts either as most is red clay(gravel).I played there back in the late 80s and 90s and nearly all matches were on clay or carpet.
We see many players come and go een at the top. A true top player has the stamina to last many matches, many tournaments, many years. Hopefully this is the birth of another
What a player! Hope he'll be consistent and raise his game. He's so elegant and classy
That's just completely nuts😳😳😳😳🤣.
Thoroughly deserved, so calm, unusual game, with various effects, speed and tricks... Impressive stuff!!😳😎
What a great story!! Hope he continues to play this well 👏👏👏
Anyone feel as though van Rijthoven has a game made for grass?? Superb match from him anyways 👏
wow, amazing !!!! Congrats ! Hope to see him at Wimbledon
Most stunning win/story of this season by far!
Wimbledon WC for this man please.
What a legend. That win would mean the world at his stage in his career.
What a feat from Rijhtoven!!.
Traditionally grass always brings about this shocking results in a match but throughout the tournament is wow!!
He took his chances to the max especially having got a wild card and being N°205 and 25 yr. For ex. Sam Querrey N°107 or Gilles Simon N°134 had to play 2 qualys matches to 1R.
From behind his forehand looks like Marcos Giron to me, indeed thought was him the other day. Nothing really extraordinary in his strokes but kept an astounding consistency and absolute calm mind throughout the tournament.
Hope Tim keeps on progressing!! 💪
Well dang. That’s pretty cool
I like Van Rijthoven's game style. It's more measured and composed like an orchestrator. I don't know how well it will work vs grafters but it's fun to watch at least.
Van 🏃💨 Ran right through the Unorthodox 🐙 Octopus & it's blowing me Away! Just imagine if he wins Wimbledon Next! ✌️🤯
awesome player! I have never knew him before but he has a neat and clean tennis style! so beautiful to watch! hope he can use this tool to win a grand slam
The man plays some very exciting tennis. Perfect for grass but I'm sure dangerous on any surface. And never lost his cool.
Will be very interesting to see what happens from him after here. The world is his oyster.
A tennis discerning eye cud easily see his game is built for a slick grass court but fantastic achievement nonetheless, congratulations n best wishes !!!
Great game. Am I the only one to notice the odd camera angle as he laid there celebrating his win? I guess you could say it was a happy ending.
Really been missing how smooth Fed plays lately but this guy is even more smoother.. the new talent was born.
What a talented and gifted man he is!
Always had the talent, maybe we will see him break into the top 50 in the next year or so.
Like Aslan karatsev
Let’s hope he sticks around unlike Karatsev….
Play like a top 10
Amazing slices!
He's so smooth!
He has a Hewitt-like atmosphere and a Roger-like backhand. I look forward to his future success.
