Case 580b transmission dump valve(clutch valve) rebuild

  • The case 580b backhoe has a "clutch" pedal. It functions as a hydraulic bypass which dumps the pressure the shuttle shift system is sending to engage the clutches back to tank. Mine was leaking badly through the rod seals on the clutch petal spool. I rebuilt the whole valve and do my best to show the steps. Sorry about the shaky footage it's a genetic thing and it's just the way it is when I'm filming close ups.

    What was the problem you were having with the clutch before you began this repair?
    I have a 580CK (videos on my RUclips channel) and the clutch pedal linkage is stiff. I think that the spool valve could be part of the issue. Thanks for posting this fix; every little bit about these old tractors helps someone. + I just subscribed to your channel. All the Best!

    Great instructional video! I have the chance to buy an old 580b but it has clutch and or transmission issues. So I thought I would see what was out there on YT that might give me tips on what to look for if I decide to buy it. Your video gave me some good insights on how to analyze a situation like this.
    Ok may have missed it but did you replace that filter you said should be checked as one of the first things you do when troubleshooting??
    Thanx and God bless! 👍

    I have a 1970 case 580ck that doesn't move forward or backwards. If i lift the wheel in the air and put it in gear, tires will spin very slow and i can stop them by grabbing the tire with my hand. Do you have any idea what it might be? Thanks

      Assuming it's a shuttle shift like mine, forward neutral reverse on the steering column, then I have bad news. They use a wet clutch system on the front of the transmission, it's hydraulicly operated with the shuttle and the clutch petal is actually a dump valve. Sounds like your clutch packs are worn out. So as far as I know you will have to split the tractor at the trans to get to them.

    @26:37 do you know what is behind those fittings, o ring? or just threaded. I have a decent leak there and would like to get what i need before i pull it apart.

    • @GRTRanchadventures
      @GRTRanchadventures  3 года назад

      I dident actually take the fittings off the valve block but as far as I can tell it appears to be an SAE fitting with an o ring. Not sure what size but if you don't already have one an o ring master kit like the one linked is handy to have and will definitely have the right one.

    My 580B is leaking from a port under the valve body ... like dumping out, any idea what that could be? I'm guessing something is messed up with the relief valve? I noticed it leaking, backed up, and when I shut the tractor down it dumped hard out of it ... once I started the machine back up, 30 seconds in after pressure was built, it started running like a river again, and when I shut the tractor down it unloaded ... I have pics and a video but can't upload them onto the comments here ... any info or ideas would be greatly appreciated

      Based on the video it looks like maybe the gasket under the block is blown out but it's hard to tell, also the milky color of your oil means it has water in it which can lead to rust related problems

    • @HeikkinenClan
      @HeikkinenClan 2 года назад

      @@GRTRanchadventures Thanks for the response, I was surprised with the amount of milky fluid in there ... I just drained the system and put brand new stuff in it hours before this had happened, and it had sat for a week with the drain plug out ... there is a sort of port there it's pouring out of, I'm hoping its supposed to be there to dump fluid incase of issues? either way I'm gonna try to pop the block off Monday ... thinkin I'll pull the fuel tank off and then dive into it as you did ... I've read online to watch out that the spring and detent ball doesnt fall out for the relief and then down into the gear housing causing you to have to split the tractor to retrieve it ... ever run into that issue before?

      @@GRTRanchadventures Looking at the schematic, it looks like it's a Cup Plug that came out ... surprising in the fact that its summer time and nothing froze, but maybe over the years it wore out? possibly when I filled the machine with new oil there was water in it and over filled causing pressure and blowing it out? either way, gonna hope that its a cup plug on there that is gone and its an easy fix

      @@HeikkinenClan for sure watch out for that ball detent like you said mine was pretty easy to keep control of but be careful. Mine is so dirty that I can't see any plugs there but if there is one it could have rusted out do to having water in the oil previously, if you had just changed it and it was still that milky it must have been pretty water logged before. Also I was able to get everything apart without removing the fuel tank so it can be done although it was pretty tight.
