- The national #lockdown imposed by the Indian government early last year caused untold pain and suffering, not least for #migrantworkers who, suddenly left without an income or a support system, were compelled to leave cities for their villages and small towns, often walking hundreds of miles on foot.
It was the largest mass migration in India since the Partition and we decided to tell the heartbreaking stories of some of the migrants to understand how government mismanagement and apathy had unleashed a humanitarian disaster atop of a public health crisis.
The more we travelled the more we were overwhelmed by the sheer helplessness of the migrants. “There is no one for us” was a common refrain.
#Vilaap, a new documentary, tells the story of how last year’s mismanaged lockdown unleashed a humanitarian disaster in India.

Hearth breaking.You know I live near Eastern express highway in Mumbai and I saw these unimaginable situation of migrants walking🚶👣 back home hundreds of miles and 👉😔thousands of them walking back hopeless,helpless that it broke my heart😭😭 and I donated my all personal savings to distribute them help them with some daal Rice biscuits frooti water and chappal but it's the same situation this time too God help innocent poor migrant workers and their families.

Migrant workers should take a lesson from last year's humiliation from government. In 2024 they should vote for good education, good healthcare, good women's safety and a proper respectable work with dignity.
I regret sitting at home not doing anything. Even though I managed to help our maid and some other families, I wish I had gone on the ground. I was too scared!
