In Meerut, a family’s hunt for oxygen ends in death | Ground Report

- On April 30, two young men were trying to lift an older, unconscious man at #Meerut’s Lala Lajpat Rai Medical college.
The older man was Suresh, 60, a fruit seller from Meerut’s Nangla Bhattu locality. He was being moved by his desperate, teary-eyed son Shivam and a friend, while his brother Ramesh and wife Babita watched on helplessly.
“What happened to you?” Babita sobbed. “You were all right till yesterday.”
Suresh’s health had worsened the night before. “He felt breathless all of a sudden,” Ramesh explained. “We first took him into the open air on our terrace, but when that did not work, we went to the doctor.”
The doctor prescribed some medicines and recommended a #Covid test. The next day, as the family prepared to take Suresh for testing, he passed out.
The family then began a search for a ventilator, ferrying Suresh in an e-rickshaw. “We were turned away from a local private hospital,” Ramesh told us. “They did not have any.”
By the time his family reached the medical college, their desperate hunt for #oxygen ended tragically.

I lost my father to covid two weeks back but it was a small mercy that he got the required treatment and did not have any pain while he left us.
I can't even imagine the helplessness of the family. Government is ready to take taxes but not provide the care.
My father also passed away few months back. He had been in ventilation for two days. But suddenly oxygen flow was problem. Pulse was completely down

This reminds me of those families here in the U.S. whose family members were denied treatment and they either died in parking lot or at home from cancer or other health conditions. People should not be turned away when they’re health status is declining.

People in the U.S. weren't turned away for lack of money.... that's illegal . They were turned away because of there were no more beds, or weren't consider CRITICAL. THE critical are filling beds. When a hospital is so over whelmed, just as it is in India now, and Dr's and nurses are falling ill themselves. There just comes a time when there is no more room. It's that simple.
