- India’s strict lockdown to halt the spread of coronavirus meant that most factories and businesses shut down, rendering millions jobless.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to businesses to keep paying their workers, including daily-wage labourers.
But that didn’t happen, and most of the workers were left with little money and food.
With no prospect of income, they took long journeys to go back to their villages. Some managed to get transport, but those who couldn’t, walked hundreds of miles.
And some of them never made it home as they died because of exhaustion or in accidents.
The BBC’s Vikas Pandey and Anshul Verma report.

If there’s one thing this pandemic has exposed in an unbelievable scale, it’s the sad plight of migrant workers from all around the world, and the governments and big corporations lack of help to relocate to their home towns, it’s like these poor workers are just a kind of disposable commodity that is not human. My prayers go out to all these migrant workers around the world and hope they can find peace and comfort when they reach their homes.

Cancelling all the trains and buses and giving only four hours' notice (which this report tactfully does not say). Modi's government has been routinely incompetent, this is the latest and worst.
This is the most heartbreaking report that I have seen yet. The plight of these people is unbelievably difficult, and it seems that the authorities are not aware of how damaging some of their policies have been.

I am Indonesian. I lived and studied in Jawaharlal Nehru University for five years. I know from my reading and discussion India government and military have hundred or even thousand trucks in their garages, why can the government and the military sent their trucks to carry these people to their bus station near their homes. India has very less population growth rate. High population is due to high population India already had 100s of years ago. India used to be very populated even in 17th century. If there was no migration. Europe would have been highly populated today.
