I remember when Split Enz entered the music world here in Oz, and I was thinking who are these 'weirdos' with their make up, hairdos, and strange clothing, as we hadn't seen anything like it before, however, after one song, I didn't think they were weird at all, just a very unique and talented group of artists 🥰👌, thank you NZ 👏👏
The song was about Tim Finns mental depression, both brothers are such an asset to all Kiwis and I can see Te Awamutu from where we live on the Hauraki Plains, I don't even think alot of Kiwi's appreciate the band. When they sing Aotearoa that's Maori for New Zealand, meaning " Land of the long white cloud "
I actually think the Kiwis realy appreciate Split Enz. I requested I hope I never. My favourite song on their album True Colours I listened to in 1980 when I was 13. So far, 42,000 views....
I remember when this song was not long out. I was patrol in a submarine when we sprung the engine room hatch. We couldn't go deep but had to remain dived. We rigged plastic around the hatch to drain the water into the bilge and ran the bilge pump continuously. We thought the title suited us to a tee.
@@bline5891 Noiseworks is an aussie band only jon stevens is the kiwi who initially was a popstar in nz before going to aus but both countries do claim Crowded House
Split Enz , became Crowded House when brothers Tim and Neil went separate ways. Tim actually later years join his brother in Crowded House. Crowded House, omg you will know their music. Oh for etc info Neil for a time was lead vocals for Fleetwood Mac.
Loving a bit of NZ bands you are reviewing. Neil Finn later joined another band called Crowded House in Australia with 2 Aussies. He also sang and toured with Fleetwood Mac.
Neil didnt join Crowded House he created them with Aussie musicans after the fallout with his brother Tim. But here you are right Neil did front for Fleetwood Mac ( My favourite band of all time ) 9:29
Damn! This is an old song from the 80’s I was a baby then around 4 yrs old when this was released in 1982 (I looked it up)😂. All I remember is the chorus 🎶 6 months in a leaky boat🎶 😂😂😂😂😂
Tim the singer was in a recording studio in south Melbourne l was working for a band same day in the studios .l looked in the window just Tim with his head inside a cardboard box singing and being recorded they tried different things for different sounds.the year l think was 19 82 .l was 18
The Finn brothers are brilliantly talented and they were ground breaking when they hit the music scene in both NZ and Oz because they didn't really fit into any existing category. They came over to Oz (thanks NZ ❤) in their crazy costumes that their Mum sewed for them on her home sewing machine, and we Aussies fell in love with them. The Finn brothers have an enormous and varied (and hugely successful) back catalogue of music between them.
Split Enz are brilliant, quirky, bizzare and fun. MY first favourite band as a kid. Technically only Neil Finn and Paul Hester went on to form Crowded House with Nick Seymour (Mark Seymour's brother, Mark is the singer from Hunters and Collectors who you have reacted to).
Thanks Mike. That brought back many memories. In the early 2000's Neil and Tim Finn collaborated with the original Wiggles with this song. My youngest son (now 25) loved it. Cheers Mike.
Split Enz was a fantastic band they use to wear all kinds of weird and colorful clothing backed up with out of this world hairdos. Once they got rid of these things the world took notice of them people realised these guys could really play. Who could never forget one of the band members Noel Crombie doing a solo playing the spoons. The Finn boys are so talented!
You've picked yourself a fight here brother calling them an Australian Band 😂 But all good, New Zealand my friend, we're a little parochial about our bands 😂
Aotearoa (Ay-oh-taya-row-ah) is the Maori (indigenous) name for New Zealand just FYI. Split Enz didn't become Crowded House by the way - Neil Finn formed crowded House with two Australian musicians after Split Enz... ended.
Not Australian although they’d like to claim it. It’s from Aotearoa New Zealand and is about the settlers coming from the UK to almost exactly the other side of the World.
I See Red! That'll get you fired up. Then you can go to the usual lead vocalist after that. This is one the greatest bands (plus Crowded House) and songwriters in music ever. Sounds like a bold claim, doesn't it.
Your journey with the Australian music may have gone a little off course. Roughly 1200 miles off course. This song is a New Zealand song... it even says as much with the first word of the third verse
This song makes me cry every time, its timeless, pays respect to NZ original people well before anyone
Great reaction! This was banned in UK By the BBC due to the Falklands war. Great band. "I see red" is one of my favs.
I remember that "incident" well. A classic example of the murky world of paranoia that all secret services spooks live in.
Actually banned by Margaret Thatcher, Britain's first fascist leader

In other words, you're basically saying, "That was my mistake." 😅😂 Lots of love.
@KARENK72886 oh dear me😅🤭🤦🏼♀️
No they are a Kiwi Band from Te Awamutu New Zealand
The song was about Tim Finns mental depression, both brothers are such an asset to all Kiwis and I can see Te Awamutu from where we live on the Hauraki Plains, I don't even think alot of Kiwi's appreciate the band.

Made you who you are brother.
Tim Finn and Neil Finn , yes they’re brothers are next level song writers and muso’s . From NZ originally they had lotsa hits here in oz . Thx Mike 😊
Awesome Greg.. always requests that I love.
Best band from nz ever , every member of the band was a top notch musician
split enz is kiwi - the finn brothers are from Te Awamutu
Hey but we claim them anyway, just like Noiseworks, Dragon etc

We invented Pavlova.
Fark.. I loved this song when I was a kid..
"Message to my girl" is a fantastic track from Split Enz. Showcasing Neil's writing and vocal abilities.
Being from Nz is Kinda special as it such a little country at the bottom of the world. Hearing this again makes my heart sing.

The opening instrumentals always take me back. Absolutely awesome choice, Greg! ❤️🇦🇺👍
They had a killer live show including a spoon solo, from Aoteroa New Zealand ❤ started of as art school eccentrics 😂

Yeah. Both split enz and crowded house were significant in my youth. Would be great to check out crowded house 🏠
Eddie Rayner played and wrote the intro called Pioneer , the drummer Noel , used to design all there costumes
Love it when you read the requesters backstory and context info.

new wave music crowded House has some gems.
Haven't seen this version before... with the long intro.
ahha well done you found a N.Z song

Have you worked out yet why it had an 80's vibe?
This song got banned during the Falklands war for some reason I don't understand.
Because they thought that it would reduce the moral of the troops. It was one of the the most remote wars ever fought, entirely supplied by sea.
