Split Enz formed in 1972 down here in New Zealand. Song release was 1980. Lead singer Neil Finn became lead singer for Crowded House that formed in Melbourne AU 1985. Inwhich they had great success. Both great bands. Enjoy your content. Cheers.
Split Enz is a criminally underrated band. Their sound was definitely a product of the times, but probably isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Regardless, they had a heap of hits, with songs like “Message to my girl”, “Straight Old Line”, “I see Red”, “Poor Boy”, “I Hope I Never” and “Dirty Creature” (my personal favourite) among others filling out their catalogue. Now, the greatest compilation of their music, IMHO, was done with Neil Finn and various other New Zealand vocalists covering some of their greatest songs with the backing of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) on the appropriately named album, ENZSO. It is hard to overstate the quality of the album, so choosing what to hear is difficult, but I recommend all the aforementioned songs, especially “Message to my Girl” and “Dirty Creature”. Unfortunately there are no music video’s for the ENZSO album, but the music is simply superb.
I'd agree - back in the day (early 80s) I saw them in London. Seeing Noel Crombie in a Harlequin costume deadpanning across the stage playing the spoons is a moment I will treasure forever.....
Love your reactions. More Splt Enz and Crowded House please! Neo-Punk in "I see red", perfect description of anxiety in a young relationship in "One step ahead". Thanks again matey :)
yeah so from my country New Zealand Split Enz were pretty much doing their own thing but within this artsy rock new wave style. remember peter gabriel and Genesis, Bowie were doing the same thing dressing up with make up etc it wasnt cos they were gay , it was avant garde but actually more artsy. Neil Finn who came in later on in the group later formed crowded house, but became one of the most premier song writers world renowned and respected by most musicians.
Hi Mike!! I forgot to add that this band and Mother Goose were both New Zealand Bands. I got the cassette tape True Colours by Split Enz for my birthday and played it several times a night at bedtime!!For years!! This song was number one as well as other songs on the album. Great band!!
Great song, great band - Split Enz were glam rock royalty, and the Brothers Finn were and still are incredibly prolific song writers and performers who earned the respect of musicians worldwide. In fact Neil Finn was a member of Fleetwood Mac for several years - you can't get more royal than that.

SE's had a hit with their song, Six Months in a Leaky Boat, the song however, was unexpectedly banned from release in the UK at the time as the British government viewed the lyrics as a threat to the moral of it's navy during the Falkland War. True!
Great to see a Kiwi band. New Zealand produce a lot of talent. Many come to Australia to help build their name first. Then we claim them as Aussies when they are great.Split Enz are Aussies 😅
I believe this was very unique and cool at the time, they went further with the costumes and faces in other videos! I really prefer Crowded House, their later metamorphosis! 😄
Hey Mike. Nothing wrong with being a goober 😂 . We all like Split Enz . Brothers Tim and Neil Finn from NZ were prolific song writers and were huge in Oz . Neil went on to form Crowded House . I wonder if your mate still wears eye liner these days ?😉😊
Yeah l never wore eye liner...but a band l worked for did and foundation that Brown stuff on there face even lipstick l think.early 80s l just shook my head seeing them getting ready ...a marine wearing eye-liner?😅 hope he can fight.

First up - excuse my foreign expectations, but for a guy from Texas you're taking a good take on Australia with your selections. I GOT YOU hit Australia in 1980 like Abba did 5 years before. This song is now part of Australian DNA. That's a big compliment to NZ & the Finns.
Kiwi Band - in their early days they were big on looking different. Eventually they went main stream but it was an interesting look for the day. Much the same as Mother Goose. Fantastic band for sure and worth looking at further. My Mistake and Late Last Night are even more out there. There were a ton of great Kiwi bands - Dragon, Swingers, Max Merritt just to name a few.

This whole Album is Fantastic!!!! ''True colours'' listen to it every week or two.
Enz of an era . The first album I ever bought $3:98 back in 1980 . Devo's , Freedom of Choice was the second.
The True Colours album is one of my all-time favourites. So many good songs on it. Tim Finn is a brilliant writer and was also in Crowded House.

Their early make up and costumes reminded me a bit of Peter Gabriel in his Genesis days. Not quite as ‘out there’ though. 😅❤🇦🇺👍
