A little bit of trivia... the bloke in red wearing the horn-rimmed glasses is Neil Finn, brother of the lead singer Tim Finn. Neil is one of the members of Crowded House...
Make no mistake . this is a New Zealand band . Saw them when they first came to Australia live , brilliant !. They were just as good live . And their live show was like you just saw , just great !
Loved these guys. Brothers Tim and Neil Finn. You have reacted to Neil Finn so many times already in the band he started after Split Enz... Crowded House and their farewell concert songs such as Don't Dream its Over!
Bit of trivia for you. There was a TV show in Australia called Countdown, hosted by Ian 'Molly' Meldrum, and they would have guest artists from all over the world on it, plus local talent. Really famous show, look it up. Anyway - one of the producers was talking about rock stars coming on the show to plug their latest songs (they would usually have the groups perform their hits live on the show, every Sunday night). He was talking about how they would get the bands to come on and rehearse at 7am or 8am on a Sunday morning, and how difficult it would be to get them to come in that early on a Sunday (any day, you know, being rock stars 😂). He said that Split Enz every time would turn up at 8am in full costume and makeup ready to go - it was stunning stuff. One of the most professional bands ever. One of my absolute favourite bands of all time - Tim and Neil Finn are amazing and Split Enz (and Neil's band after, Crowded House) are brilliant ❤
If the Thunderbirds had formed a band! I remember seeing them in the early days in Australia. They were at Bombay Rock in Melbourne with Paul Kelly and the Dots. the highlight was they both did "I See Red" on the night.
@@rebeccasatherley4727 Tim Finn sang lead on this song. Neil Finn, his brother, who was also in Split Enz, joined Fleetwood Mac for a tour as a guitarist and singer to replace Lindsey Buckingham...Neil Finn is the lead singer for his band Crowded House...
Keep in mind these guys were wearing hair up, sides of their heads shaved, and makeup--what bands were doing in the 80s--in the SEVENTIES. Split Enz was so far ahead of its time nobody has really ever caught up with them.
Love it at the end "ooooh-oops ooooh-oops"...Love their use of comedy and costumes in their act. In the 80s they went more mainstream without the costumes etc...
Speaking of toes. I was around a mate's place and he kept referring to his wife as "my little toe". After a while she asked if that was because she was small and cute? he replied, " No. I's because I'll probably have a few beers tonight and bang you on the coffee table".
I remember when this song came out - I thought, what a weird outfit ( even though the tune was catchy). Little did I know just what a great band it would be.
Split Enz in the early dyes they used to paint their faces similar to kiss but because kiss became a more worldwide band Split Enz stopped painting their faces and went for the more pantomime look until later in their career At that point they stopped painting their faces or using makeup apart from what they needed to use for cameras in their videos
Noel Combie their percussionist designed all of their clothes. He later played drums on Time and Tide after Mal Greens departure. He wasn't sure he was the right choice as he was not a drummer in the true sense. He performed well!
Eddie Vedder from Pearljam is a massive fan of Split Enz. Check him out singing various Enz songs on the original Seven Worlds Collide DVD/clips on RUclips eg I See Red with Liam Finn's band, Tim Finn joining him for the second verse. It is pure mayhem.
Hahaha I know, I love it how Tim comes out his Dad shirt but kills it still!!!! They are a band to have been seen live, they could go harder live!!!had to town it down for tv.
@@jemxs We've done a lot of Crowded House and even some Neil Finn solo stuff. I just wanted to give Travis and Suzi some context. We see a VERY young Neil Finn here, and then an ageing Neil at the Sydney Opera House still smiling and still rocking the house down, that just makes me happy. So many decades of good music. Both Neil and Tim are absolute legends. Neil's back catalogue of music is just insanely good.
@@_Dei_ oh I know and I have watched them all! I thought your first reply was a clever pointing out my typo! So I went along with it. So you're Dei, you used to be TruBlu I think! LoL 🤣. Also saw Tim do a show at The Lounge in about 1993, also amazing.

There looks to be a few influences on the video, marionettes and mime in addition to the others mentioned in the comments. But all of them in their visual aesthetic have their roots in pre televised entertainment where either because of viewing distance or scale the facial makeup and movements are exaggerated to make them easier to see compared with a computer monitor or a tv a few feet away.
wish I had the money to put in some music we have 5 seconds of summer -young blood new band called Wicked Smile -Don't wait for me and singer Danny is amazing but I would be broke by the time I finished lol keep them coming

I really liked Tim Finn’s solo song “Fraction too much Friction”, actually the whole Escapade album
I love the follow up just as much. Big Canoe
Split Enz, every song is a banger! Thanks for the reaction 👍
The ENZ were true pioneers in the NZ music scene.
Lead vocals on this Tim Finn, Brother Neil is in the Red suit playing guitar later to form Crowded House.
I just recommend this song in another video, not knowing you'd done this. Awesome song.
Have a listen to Dirty Creature, Shark attack, Poor Boy, What's the matter with you, Six months in a leaky boat and History never repeats.

How brave were Split Enz back in the day?
On the costumes, Pretty sure they were all designed and made by Eddie Rayner ( Piano and Key boards )
