No, the album used a live drum kit - no drum machine. The keyboards (Eddie Rayner) are amazing. He was / is a very talented keyboard player - a lot of their songs that use fast arpeggios he played without electronic assistance. Check out the song “Bullet Brain and Cactus-head” for one of the most off the wall keyboard solos.

I consider them to be New Zealand's greatest band.

Easily - it was a band full of superstars. I’ve been listening to them for 40 years, and I’m still blown away by their inventive compositions.

I see you’ve listened to “I Got You”. “One Step Ahead”, “History Never Repeats”, and “Message to my Girl” are all great.

The Finn brothers later collaborated on the Crowded House album _Woodface_ -- which is chock-full of wonderfully melodic, and lyrically dense, tunes.

'Woodface' is amazing. They also released two great albums (in 1995 and 2004) as The Finn Brothers.

My second favorite Enz song (after “The Devil You Know”). You should also check out “My Mistake” and “Things.”

New Zealand, take a bow! I cannot tell you how much I love this song. I love that Split Enz was so much more than a pop band. Soi talented. Message To my Girl ia another song they did that I have continued to love since I first heard it.

To continue the metaphor, if someone's in a long-distance relationship, they may be too poor to afford to visit their love. Split Enz were great. Basically two different bands over the years - very arty and prog for the first few years of there existence, then switching to a new wave/pop sound (after original leader Phil Judd left and was replaced by Neil Finn). So many great songs: "I See Red", "I Hope I Never", "Message to My Girl", "Shark Attack", "Straight Old Line", "Give it a Whirl"... and the whole True Colours album is ridiculously good. One of the best bands ever to come out of my homeland of New Zealand. This line-up had Mal Green on drums and Noel Crombie on additional percussion, plus the Finn brothers, Nigel Griggs on bass, and the band's secret weapon, the great Eddie Rayner on keyboards.

I saw them in the early 80s a Fiesta Gardens in Austin Texas. It was an outdoor concert by Town Lake. I remember how good this song sounded in the summer evening air.

So I have said it before and I will say it again-in Australia or New Zealand-when bands are starting they do the pub live music scene-they learn honesty and truth the absolutely believe in their music and love their fans-as far as I know has ever been accused of limp sicking--just as bon Scott told them!-it's a hard road and a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll-they accept that and do the hard yards all the same-and that makes them Legends and gods!.

My hubby's and mine favourite Split Enz song! However, now you need to go back to the 70s, when they started out. They were so quirky, you'll see what I mean. I suggest,
    I see red
    That was my mistake
    Official videos please?

Ooh this was unfamiliar even though I'm a Gen X music nerd. I was only turning 8 in 1980 and that era just keeps on giving. The punk, postpunk and new wave hooked me via Ramones, Talking Heads, Police, Clash, Cure, Psychedelic Furs, Social D, Husker Du, Replacements... Also I saw Weird Al in 1984!

In the Album Split Enz, History Repeats, is is stated that the story refers to a boy that falls in love with a real allien Girl from outer space. With Six Months in a Leaky Boat my favorite Enz' Songs.
