What a classic. Brought back so many memories. Gerry was from nr Glasgow, my home town, and was in The Humblebums with Billy Connolly in the early seventies. I remember seeing them at Glasgow University Men's Union one lunchtime - yes, there were separate men's and women's unions then. They both went their separate ways, and both were successful. Baker Street is in central London. Big Tube station and fictional home of Sherlock Holmes. I believe Gerry was staying there for a while - "trying to give up the booze and the one night stands". Died too early. RIP Gerry.
I was a Police officer working out of Baker Street London. It has/ had a firing range below as used by espionage officers in WW2. Baker Street was also where the letter box where Danger mouse lived and worked. A British kids cartoon character. Brilliant song.
Gerry Rafferty was a musical genius up there with the best, he had a big hit with Stealers Wheel, (Stuck In The Middle With You) in '72 before his solo success, he has a big catalogue of music, two of his other big hits where, Get It Right Next Time and Night Owl, he unfortunately passed away in 2011 🇬🇧
Gerry Rafferty is the singer. Baker Street is such a classic, and I never get tired of listening to it. Most people seem to think that Gerry was a one hit wonder....but nothing could be further from the truth. He had grat hits with "Stuck in the middle with you", "Right down the line"....but there was one song that had it all, and will have your foot tapping in overdrive, called "Get it right next time"....totally brilliant!
My favourite song ever...ir was huge! he was a lovely Scotsman.❤ Baker Street is here in London. It's about musicians in London struggling to make it. I met him when I was 18.in a club in London..im 66. He was a lovely guy. Baker Street was on the video. ThatsBaker Street
I love it when people dream up the meaning of a song, because it makes sense in their head, when the person who wrote it said it was about something completely different. The level of confidence is wonderful.
This came out when I was sixteen, heading out on a Friday night in a Mini. Baker Street blasting on oversized speakers through a tape player. 4 teenagers full of spunk and vigor heading to a house party. What a soundtrack I had the privilege of listening to, as I grew into a man. Much of which will be enjoyed 200 years from now.
Gerry was a pal of Billy Connolly in early days. G. had to move way down to London to access the recording industry. He died of alcoholism 040111 aged 63. The iconic song lives forever.
@@user-Terry314 did you ever hear the story about Gerry and Billy on tour in Germany sitting waiting in an office doubling as a changing room work their way through the phone book to see if anyone knew why there were no Hitlers listed
Huge in Britain in ‘78. I worked in that area of the west end of London and Baker St was a bit dingy and a bit drab but it’s different now. Great days.
Being London born and bred many times over the last 50 years I've found myself alighting at Baker Street Tube, Underground, Sub-Way Station and can't tell you the amount of Buskers that have been playing this song, and on the whole most with the subterranean acoustics doing it justice. It still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end all these years later whenever I hear this magnificent recording.
Fun fact, Me and my sister used to babysit for the drummer Liam Genockey. We saw Gerry many times. We only found out who they were when we watched Top of The Pops when this reached Number 1😊😊
Sorry to be pedantic .. but it never reached No.1 .. it peaked at No.3 (prevented from going any higher by 'Wuthering Heights' , 'Denis' and 'Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs' ..)
@theCabbie2024 no worries. I didn't know that. I was very young at the time. I used to go into Liam's little back room which was a kind of sound room where he had a drum kit set up and tap away. Gerry Rafferty always takes me back to family parties as a kid. It was my job to put the Night Owl vinyl on, my wee Ma's favourite album. All my Glasgow Aunties singing along. Heartwarming memories. As has been said he was in a folk band, The Humblebums with Billy Connolly.
Sax by Wesley Magoogan. Baker Street here features Raf [ Rafael ] Ravenscroft, although you occasionally hear the 'joke' that it was played by TV compere Bob Holness [I'll have a P please, Bob ].
Gerry was also in a group called Stealers Wheel. Their song 'Stuck in the middle with You' featured in the film Reservoir Dogs. Gerry was from Ferguslie Park in Paisley.
This song defines the mid seventies for me in Wimbledon Village, SW19. Driving around in my Triumph Stag, top down, girlfriends, music, sunny days and warm light nights, lots of laughter and excitement.

Thank you for playing one of my all time favourites along with another all time favourites that Gerry had a hit with stuck in the middle with you, a hit with a group called Steelers Wheel, but Gerry first achieved fame in his native Scotland in a folk group he started with the famous comedian Billy Connolly, the group was called the Stumblebums and as they did their shows, they discovered that Billy's humorous stories between the songs suited Billy more than his music and singing. Eventually they broke up and Billy's comedy career took off and Gerry carried on with his love of music with at least two of my most favourite music hits. Hope his gives you some background to the careers of two famous sons.
I used to play this with my band, and it always went down well. I'm a sax player, and getting back into playing having not played for some years. One of my all time favourite songs - bought the single when it came out in the 70's. 😊
Gerry was also a very funny guy, Billy loved him, said he was great company. He had a lot of good records, my favourite lesser known one is 'Mary Skeffington' a simple but beautifully written song.
@johnfraser2201 yes, I remember it being the B side of a single release but don't recall what the A side was, I enjoyed all his work but that song was my favourite, probably because it was so stripped back.
One of my all-time favourites and I'm not even that old! (late 30's cough, cough). My dad always played it when I was a kid at Christmas and it is a great song, attached to great memories!
The story is about Gerry travelling to London from his home in Scotland, to try and get himself out of the Steelers Wheel contract so he can start his solo career. While in London he stayed at a friend's flat in Baker Street (of Sherlock Holmes fame). Steelers Wheel had a big hit with 'Stuck in the Middle With You'.
The full (original length) version of this fantastic creation was released many years later in around 1988 if I remember correctly. You REALLY need to hear that.
They played that song all summer back in 1978...we started calling it "The Damn Saxophone Song" in college , in the music department. Saxophone players would sneer at us lol. The sax section leader iin marching band wrote out the riff one day, got the band director in on the joke...he announced a new song we had to learn for halftime and sax section proceeded to play that damn riff over and over 200 band member s cracked up laughing...
The hand drums here are called congas, btw. Strictly speaking, only one is a conga, but, that's a whole other thing, lol. Generally theyre referred to as a set of congas...or a pair of congas. It looks like the top half of each drum is white colored and the bottom half is finished in a black colour which is lost in the shadows in the video, so they're looking smaller here than they actually are. Bongos are much shallower drums and with smaller diameter heads (drum skins). As others say, this is a very well known song...the sax solo is legendary. A very early band Gerry formed was called the Humblebums with a banjo player friend who went on to become one of, if not the, greatest stand up comedians of all time....Gerry's fellow Scotsman, the brilliant BILLY CONNOLLY. ❤
Hiya Dudes , theres a lot on the downside of being 61 years of age , but theres a lot on the upside as in we old fogies can recall all the classics and if i do throw a seven soon at least i can say ive heard all the old classics , great to see your recent videos are appreciating , love you both 🤣🤣 xx
Gerry was trying to break away from his old band Steeler's wheel. He had to sit on his music for three years due to his contract. This song was about that journey.

0:44 When you're talking about the music requests you've reacted to, and say "It's been quite enjoyable" it might be worth knowing that 'quite' is used differently in the US compared to the UK. Here it generally means 'slightly' - not 'very' like it does with you!
Gerry and Billy Connelly were in The Humblebums in the 60's before Billy turned to his comedy career. Gerry was a great wind up merchant and as told by Billy his telephone call about being a chimney sweep is hilarious
Saxist was Raphael Ravenscroft. Very successful career as a session musician (played on some Pink Floyd as well, I think). He made one solo album (only one, as far as I know) - I used to own that on vinyl in the day, but I don't think it was ever converted to CD. Great sax!
Hello my friends. Bakerstreet is a real street in Central London UK. Coming from St. James Park you pass through parts that feel like the Lebanon with Street signs in arabic language, than you see Bakerstreet #221 (you know that adress, dont you?) and come to the street crossing where Madame Tussauds Museum is. It is quiet a long street through the not so lucky parts of London . I used to walk through London some 25 years ago, as I do today with nearly every City, I visit. This is the short version. The long album version is a much better listen. Regardless this is a classic. If you love sax then try 'Will you' by Hazel O'Connor.
Gerry was not capable of writing a bad song. One of the purest voices in rock history and his musical genius was second to none. You could do a whole album reaction to the city to city album that this was on... but if you want more sax, jump over to Get It Right Next Time. Such a good vibe in that one.

Just watched your backlog and the "15 IRN Bru Advertisements" one. Now that it's christmas you really really should watch "the snowman" from the 80's I'm sure it's available on most streaming services in the US as well. For a lot of people it's the one to watch in this period. It's not very long either. Cheers. Happy Holidays.
I cannot believe you two haven't reacted to this or know of it............... wow I feel ancient. Gerry started out in a folk duo called The Humblebums with the iconic Scottish comedian Billy Connolly. Raf Ravenscroft is the sax man, and he had a fantastic solo hit single called 'Maxine' worth listening to for a bit more of that sax. Interestingly there was a bit of a dispute over Baker Street with Raf claiming years later that it was he who wrote the sax part, but friends of Gerry (Including Billy) disputed it and said that Gerry was always thorough and attended to every small detail himself, so making it almost impossible for him to ask or allow anyone else to write such a major part of it.
I guess its one story about thousands, a young girl goes to where she thinks the streets are paved with gold, London and Baker Street is symbolic of how tough life can be and eventually the dream vanishes and reality hits home and she leaves the guy, the city and goes home....Ive walked Baker Street many times, its full of people going somewhere nowhere......if you like great sax....listen to a song called 'Will You' by Hazel O'Connor......one of the sexiest songs ever without being blatant...

Spunk Rock By Man. Brilliant
Agree that you must try 'Will you?' - Hazel O'Connor - brilliant sax solo!

From the album city to city. Excellent album two of the songs you walk to react to our
Write down the line and stealing time

Check out Parisienne Walkways by Gary Moore live - He is another guitar god.
