I love it when people dream up the meaning of a song, because it makes sense in their head, when the person who wrote it said it was about something completely different. The level of confidence is wonderful.
What a classic. Brought back so many memories. Gerry was from nr Glasgow, my home town, and was in The Humblebums with Billy Connolly in the early seventies. I remember seeing them at Glasgow University Men's Union one lunchtime - yes, there were separate men's and women's unions then. They both went their separate ways, and both were successful. Baker Street is in central London. Big Tube station and fictional home of Sherlock Holmes. I believe Gerry was staying there for a while - "trying to give up the booze and the one night stands". Billy Connolly has a great story about Gerry getting involved in an argument between a builder and client. I can't remember where he talks about it though
Gerry was from Paisley and Baker Street is arguably the greatest track ever released by a Scottish act I wonder if Mike and Jessica are familiar with Stuck in the middle with u if they're familiar with Reservoir Dogs then they will be!
Yes, I didn't know about him playing with Billy Connolly... but I loved this song... I will always remember the first time I heard it... 18-19 yrs. old.. living in Milwaukee.. getting out of work a little early on a Friday afternoon.. paycheck cashed.. whole weekend and whole life, really ahead... driving along the Lakefront... sun shining, windows down... sounded exactly like freedom and possibility - .. lol

RIP Gerry Rafferty , one of the smoothest voices ever in my opinion. That sax solo is something else. Widely regarded as the greatest ever. Love from Scotland.
I can’t imagine people hearing this for the very first time because that opening lead up to the “drop” of the sax and heavy piano always gets me pumped up. So, not knowing that’s coming and then experiencing it… it must be awesome!
This song defines the mid seventies for me in Wimbledon Village, SW19. Driving around in my Triumph Stag, top down, girlfriends, music, sunny days and warm light nights, lots of laughter and excitement.

Huge in Britain in ‘78. I worked in that area of the west end of London and Baker St was a bit dingy and a bit drab but it’s different now. Great days.
Rafferty was a genius songwriter. I was in a pub in Cornwall in 1978 having a meal and drink when it was released. During the two hours we were there this was virtually the only thing played on the jukebox. Halcyon days.
Wound down to Baker St on the Metropolitan Line hundreds of times, the novelty of this song playing in my head never wore off. The last tube station before Baker St coming into London town on the Metro Line is above ground, so the trip from Finchley Rd to Baker St Station is all downhill...
One of the best tracks ever written. This talented man was from my home town, my mum knew him when she was young. I was friends with his nephew in school. A brilliant talent and gone far too soon. The stuff we missed! This guy was important and brilliant. And this sax has to be in the top three of all time (for me it's top) Great reaction!! :D cheers enjoyed that a lot.

Gerry Rafferty and Billy Connolly, the world famous comedian, were a Scottish folk rock band active from 1965 to 1971 called The Humblebums. It was after this, Feb 1978, when Rafferty released his record, Baker St.
The hand drums in this are called conga drums. You stand to play them. Bongos are two really small drums that you sit and hold between your knees. Great reaction, PJ
Thank you for playing one of my all time favourites along with another all time favourites that Gerry had a hit with stuck in the middle with you, a hit with a group called Steelers Wheel, but Gerry first achieved fame in his native Scotland in a folk group he started with the famous comedian Billy Connolly, the group was called the Stumblebums and as they did their shows, they discovered that Billy's humorous stories between the songs suited Billy more than his music and singing. Eventually they broke up and Billy's comedy career took off and Gerry carried on with his love of music with at least two of my most favourite music hits. Hope his gives you some background to the careers of two famous sons.
The best GR song by far is - moonlight and gold. It never achieved the success of his other hits but its brilliant. The song to live your life for, and it demonstrates the exceptional skills of this fine artist.
He was once in a Scottish folk group with Billy Connolly who played the Banjo they toured Universities and clubs hard to believe how famous they both became .Stuck in The Middle With You ) was his other big hit with (Stealers Wheel ) I believe .
The full (original length) version of this fantastic creation was released many years later in around 1988 if I remember correctly. You REALLY need to hear that.
I shall never forget this iconic song from Gerry Rafferty, sadly passed away 2011, aged 63 from liver failure. This particular song is so powerful. RIP Gerry 💔
Loved this one guys, as i always do when folks react to Baker Street, but very few have reacted to Get it right next time, which also has amazing sax btw.
Gerry was in the band Stealers Wheel in the early 70s (you probably know their song "Stuck in the Middle"). This song is about his disillusionment with the music business, based around London's Baker St. The mix of sax, guitar solo, and his smoky voice on it is perfect. An amazing songwriter - check out his songs "Night Owl", "Get it Right Next Time", "Right Down the Line", and "Sleepwalking". RIP Gerry, gone too soon.
One of the greatest records of all time in my opinion.
👆👆👍👍
I agree 100%.
Yes, both the song itself and the album "City to City" from which it comes.
I agree 👍
And one of the greatest intro's too

The Humblebums Gerry and Billy Connolly - Magic............
I recommended this the other day. Well done.
Haven't heard this one in years thanks for the memories
Ohh my youth 😢😢
BRILLIANT!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!😁♥️
Since you liked this, have a listen to Year of the Cat by Al Stewart
The best GR song by far is - moonlight and gold. It never achieved the success of his other hits but its brilliant. The song to live your life for, and it demonstrates the exceptional skills of this fine artist.
He was once in a Scottish folk group with Billy Connolly who played the Banjo they toured Universities and clubs hard to believe how famous they both became .Stuck in The Middle With You ) was his other big hit with (Stealers Wheel ) I believe .
Fun fact, Gerry Rafferty used to be in a folk band with Billy Connolly called The Humblebums
thanks, kids... one of my favorite songs.. appreciate your listen & reaction!
I use to work in Baker Street London! This song brings back great memories.
