Eddie Rayner on keyboards and piano is an absolute genius. The instrumental he plays before Leaky Boat is called “Pioneer.” He wrote music and rearranged a large number of Split Enz songs for live performances and two albums under ENZSO (Split Enz with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra) some amazing music with a huge mix of New Zealand artists singing lead on classic Enz tracks. I was lucky to see the concert series live in Melbourne in 1997 I think it was. Just amazing.
and the aching outro......watching him turn knobs flick switches and play orchestrally in the late 70s was something else. these cry babies now wen a laptop goes down. lol. im old. peace
My husband makes steamboat timber drums the NZSO played one of his snare drums in Christchurch in 1996. We got to meet everybody from Split Enz after the show. We got free tickets too.
Most of us New Zealanders know most of the words to almost every Enz song, part of our DNA 😁😁😁 The band used to rehearse at my uncle's house in Auckland 😊
Wow, just discovered your reactions. Split Enz are truly personal for me because I grew up with their music and my Dad was in their band when they were teenagers. Every song hits home ❤
I just discovered your reactions. I'm so glad you discovered Split Enz and "Six Months in a Leaky Boat" in particular. This is my all-time favorite song. I even have it in my will to have it played at my funeral someday in hopes it will make people smile. This song came out when I was in college and it reminded me that growing up would probably be a waste of time. So I decided then to stop trying to do that, and instead, made a career out of fantasy publishing. Between this song, and the book, Peter Pan, I'm covered. Glad you both liked this magical song. Andf this live version is my favorite.
One of my favourite Enz songs, I had never seen this live version before. Thank you. It demonstrates the musicality, lyrical ability and pure whimsy of the Finn brothers' writing. Brilliant band.
this was the first song i remember as a kid hearing the Maori word Aotearoa in lyrics of a pop song and as a young kiwi I was immensely proud of split enz and their contribution to the music world
Can't thank you enough for recognizing the greatness that is Split Enz! (and for your Crowded House reactions, as well) Some of the most talented musicians on the planet, in my humble opinion.
This song was released around the time of the Falklands war, and it was banned on the BBC, as they thought it was a commentary on the war, but it wasn't! It was written by Tim Finn, and it is really about a six month bout of depression he went through.
it was pathetic how the british government constantly over stepped with banning pop songs - i remember they were good at doing that for innocuous reasons that i found ridiculous - this was about brainwashing the public in supporting that stupid falklands war - every other country thought it was stupid so the british govt had to make sure their citizens blindly supported that stupid war so banning innocous songs and opposite opinions was the way to go
Like all good art - it's about two things at once. Lots of colonists travelled to Aoteoroa (New Zealand) in leaky boats. The literal meaning Tim Finn's bout of depression the allegory. They're very clever song writers. The two brothers together are an unmistakable sound.
cool. he left for next album but did a final tour w them yeah. he dropped 1st solo from memory. i was young but well maybe their carnival sounds and loopiness appealed more than anything. my young mind knew one step ahead was the best dark pop ever. sidetracked but their scope was so wide they really shouldnt have had so many massive hits. glad they did. peace
I'm just thrilled that you've been reacting to my favorite band in the world Crowded House, and one of my top 10 in Split Enz. The Enz has that theatrical sound and vision within their shows that make them amazing. Brothers Neil and Tim are 2 of the greatest singers and composers ever. Eddie Rayner is a Keyboard genious also. Greetings from Mexico City.
So glad you were introduced to the Split Enz. I've been a fan of the Finn brothers since they first came out and was saddened when they broke up. I of course became a fan of Neil Finn and Crowded House and followed Tim Finn's solo work. In 1992 I got to go to a Crowded House concert where they played about half a dozen Crowded House songs when Neil Finn announced that they had a special guest and brought his brother on stage, breaking out with "Six Months in a Leaky Boat". The crowd went nuts with many people holding up Split Enz album covers. The rest of the set was Split Enz.
Brilliant. I recommend a live performance by the Enz in Canada from years back performing a song called Charlie and featuring Tim Finn. His vocal performance is simply sublime.
Plus for all of us New Zealanders this song has a special meaning. It's like an anthem of our history as well as a metaphore for Tim's own personal struggle. It expresses that pioneering spirit of people braving the wild pacific ocean to sail here from Europe and how they arrived in an untamed, and not so welcoming land at the bottom of the world to literally build a new way of life for themselves. That beautiful intro really puts you out in the ocean with them....we are Oceania.
At the time this was released, I saw Tim being interviewed, and he said that part of his inspiration was reading a biography of Bass and Flinders, and their circumnavigation of Australia
The song has a special meaning for me too. In 1953 my mother, who was 18 at the time and worked in the British Home Office as a trainee clerical assistant, made friends with a girl who'd come over from New Zealand for the 1951 Exhibition and stayed until Queen Elizabeth's coronation two years later. In that time she walked around Britain, broke her neck, got married and had a child. She and her husband eventually settled in Gisborne as part-owners of a successful vineyard, and although they kept in touch for many years I never took advantage of their offer to visit them even though they made it clear I'd be treated as one of the family. So whenever I hear this I'm reminded of lost opportunities.
Six months in a leaky boat was written about Captain Cook's voyage sailing from England to the great unknown (Australia and New Zealand) back in the 1770's. Can you imagine spending six months in a tall ship sailing into the great unknown in a big wooden boat? That little piece at the start with the piano is called Pioneer which leads into Six months in a leaky boat on their 1982 album Time and Tide.
@@shauntempley9757Its a play on words mate, maybe he said it was about his depression but everyone knows it took six months to get to the antipodes from Britain. It maybe about both.
It is more about the journey to Aotearoa, hence it being in the song. They could get here in six months using the old trade route currents of the sailing ship days, so long as Aotearoa is your only destination. @@iankearns774
Interesting that no-one has mentioned what the song is about. It is about the men who sailed to NZ with Captain Cook who then colonised NZ. Of interest was that the song was banned in the UK during the Falklands war. Apparently they were feeling a bit sensitive about the number of casualties they were having with some people believing that it was a reference to the quality and ability of the UK Navy.
If you want to here more of Tim Finn's voice like that, you need to check out Split Enz - Charlie. The live version from 2006 (the same concert as this) is not a bad version.
A really great bunch of intelligent talented guys. I remember a mate buying Mental Notes in 74 I think, in Melbourne. That NZ band had a great influence on Australian Music and Australia embraced them like brothers in an almost organically, ANZACian way.
and over time the aussies did want they always do and decided that they were aussies really - so call them another great aussie band like crowded house
I've only noticed "Aotearoa" (the Māori name for New Zealand) - nice to see they have corrected the pronunciation from the original "A-O-Tay-Ah-Ro-Wah" to something closer to the more accepted "Aow-Tay-Ah-Raw-Ah" in this and later performances. Not a Kiwi myself so please correct me if I'm wrong
this song was banned by the BBC because at the time the Falklands war was on and the British had lost some ships and they thought it was too close to the bone.
split enz- yes!, so ahead of ver time n creative, try one step ahead, dirty creature, i hope i never, i got u, message to my grl, n also neil had a band later called crowded house
Tim and Neil Finn are both good songwriters, singers, guitar and piano players. Tim's vocals, IMO, are better and his songs take on passionate causes and emotions. He has recorded some outstanding songs. His first and 2nd solo albums, Escapade and Big Canoe, are my favourites. Tim has written a commissioned opera, plus other commissioned music along with many solo pieces for himself. All of Tim and Neil's kids are muscians.
You don`t get it at all. It was about British sailors complaining of 6 months in a leaky boat to sail down the Atlantic and kill Argentines that they didn`t want to kill.
man they need to do SUFFER NEVER FROM 7 WORLDS COLLIDE. Wanna see how far they went from ENZ TO SOLO TO C HOUSE TO FINN BROS man. watch them w 3/5ths of radiohead, the smiths johnny marr lisa from the revolution and eddie vedder. yeah these bros are monsters. peace
The greatest not famous band of all time. Legendary song writing
They were pretty famous. They were huge in Canada when I was in high school. I think they topped charts around the world?
@@naomisteinberg2794 I think you’re right on the chart thing and also Neal Finn started crowded house and Tim Finn joined later on.
@brucenicoll4373 Tim was a founding member of Split Enz and Neil joined later. Tim was only in Crowded House for a relatively short while.

one of those rare occasions where the live performance is amazeballs. these guys were so talented in every way.
The great Eddie Raynor on keyboards. He also played on some of the early Crowded House tours.
Do you remember The Makers?
Eddie Rayner was also responsible for an orchestration of Split Enz songs that was a major hit.
Split Enz, we’re very unconventional and inventive. Beloved in nz and Oz.
this was the first song i remember as a kid hearing the Maori word Aotearoa in lyrics of a pop song and as a young kiwi I was immensely proud of split enz and their contribution to the music world
Eddie Rayner.....underrated keyboardist extraordinaire......and Tim Finn is a wonderful singer.

I never knew that was about Tim's depression. I thought Tim simply wanted to write an adventure song.
I believe it’s also a reference to the time the Māori were at sea before colonizing Aotearoa (New Zealand)
Thought it was a coming out song
I thought it was about the early European settlers and the long trip to the antipodes but how awesome it can be read so many ways.
Split Endz “I Hope I Never” makes me cry every time I hear it. Would be a great song for you to react to!

Every member past and present were genuine masters , the pianist , drummer , bass all amazing
Eddie Rayner was WAY ahead of his time. Brilliant band.
I was blessed to sing this as part of a New Zealand themed musical a few years ago.
I recorded the full album off the radio in the 80s. I still have the cassette tape and play it in my car,,,,,,,tape and cd player babys!
Try "Whaling" written by Dave Dobbin when part of DD Smash another iconic kiwi band.

When you hear tight harmonies from Crowded House or Split Enz, it's always the Finn Brothers.
That song was banned on the BBC during the Falklands war.

For the longest time I had just assumed Neil sang Six Months In A Leaky Boat. Well done Tim!
So glad you liked this.
First heard this song in a surf movie, it goes hard. Every time im near the ocean ill play this song
If you want to here more of Tim Finn's voice like that, you need to check out Split Enz - Charlie. The live version from 2006 (the same concert as this) is not a bad version.

The Aussies will always try to claim them as theirs but they will always be Kiwi, so proud of our boys.
Nice 😊❤ I love the piano and I am always so impressed by good whistlers 😙😚😗
Eddie Rayner. As integral to the Split Enz sound as Tim Finn and Phil Judd.

Thats true Mr Peacock. Thats true.

Aotearoa (2nd verse) is the proper name of New Zealand.

The story about the lyrics is about the people sailing from England to Australia- Most of them were prisoners.
Let me mansplain just quick. Split Enz is a New Zealand band (it's there in the name). New Zealand colonists were free.. not prisoners.
It was about Tim's six months bout of depression, nothing about sailing from England
