A breakdown and drills (to practice) for the Thai sidekick would be amazing. I've only ever learned the TKD and Karate style side kick and it's very hard (and clunky) to chamber and throw in a squared kickboxing stance.
I do Light contact, and the side kick really is bread and butter there. Once you get good at the sliding version, and especially chaining them or throwing other techniques off of it, you have such a large threat zone.
Imma a shorter guy and I’ve been training for a year and I’m glad i seen this because the last two techniques I do naturally and feels good to connect with combos
Okay, This was insanely great video! I've been practicing different martial arts and combat sports over 30 years and still there was couple of new points for me. Wow! And yes would love to see your video about the thai side kick.
Fantastic. I'm glad I got some new information to you 👍 It seems that everyone wants to learn about the thai side kick so that will definitely be one of my videos for next month.
I use the gazelle or leaping lead hook regularly and it indeed covers a lot of distance. Because of the power even if it is blocked you can follow up. The lead right hand is great and often opponents are untrained to react to a lead right and normally throw a jab parry as they assume the first punch is a jab. Today I will try out your demo on the Thai side kick- it would be great to see how you use it in sparring as I am always worried about someone catching a side kick and sweeping etc. Your videos are of amazing quality and I would like to thank you for providing such wisdom which allowe me to grow even when I cannot find in coach in my area. Respect
In depth Thai side kick vid would be beautiful. A little bonus I do with the step thru cross is using the momentum of the roll to throw a cheeky left body hook. I normally do Thai or MMA sparring so after two or so throws I then ditch it as I know I'll get tagged. Always feels sooo good to land it though!
Definitely interested in a detailed breakdown of the side-kick, particularly on weight distribution before and momentum generation with the step! One thing not mentioned for the hook is the fact that since it's used as a surprise opening attack against an opponent ready and with their defense up, a straight punch would end up in their gloves, whereas the hook circles around it.
For another great technique for fighting at a distance, check out GSP vs Koscheck. GSP threw a multitude of long step + jabs that destroyed his opponent's face.
Great video. I loved watching you're fighting career and I'm happy to see you start a RUclips channel. Making contact can be extremely difficult and you don't know the ropes in order to make it extremely entertaining. A lot of RUclipsrs or people with money pay or find someone that can assistant content creating for free and honestly that's what I think would benefit you a lot and I'm looking forward to seeing your RUclips channel grow. Wish you the best of luck.
@@GabrielVargaOfficial that's extremely great news when I saw you were making a RUclips channel I thought you were planning on not continuing your fighting career. I wish you good luck in both then
"Jumping hook" also called a gazelle punch. Rocky Marciano used it, and he was undefeated despite having the shortest reach of any heavyweight champion; so it is very good. I think Marvin Haggler had success with a "gazelle jab", and Ricardo Lopez might have as well. From what I have seen, it appears to be the best method to cover distance in boxing. I have been trying to have this observation confirmed or denied, but the technique is pretty rare.
Really love these technique videos - they're super helpful - the step hook was something I found myself doing because it felt good - pump fake on the cross, and then spring forward with the hook - seeing that it's a legit technique is awesome! I'm new to Muay Thai/Kickboxing, so I wasn't sure if it was a good move! Also LOVE the thai side-kick - I'm definitely working that up! More info on that would be super.
Man you are such an unassuming guy. You speak really well seem like a very nice person. Not that that has anything to do with fighting ability. But it's so true you can't judge a book by its cover. Your a killer
@@GabrielVargaOfficial Appreciate you! Great content and your channel is growing quickly. Probably not as fast as you want, but over 15k since i started watching.
Big fan of you sir! Thank you so much for giving us training tips from the world best for total noobs like me who wanna learn striking due to our love for mma.
These are the best instructional videos for striking on RUclips. Thank you for all the work you put in creating them. With great respect and appreciation...
In taekwondo they call this first kick is called the cut kick, which is really confusing since Muay Thai has a different kick called a cut kick from what I understand. This was so popular in sport Taekwondo that people started to leave the leg up and push up their opponent's hip in order to cancel out incoming kicks (since there are rules against punching to the head and limited points for punching to body). It got so ridiculous that they eventually made a rule against leaving a leg up in a chamber to discourage it. Still very popular! One popular counter is the Moldova kick, a sort of round kick where the rear leg crouches. Another popular counter is the turning heel kick. The turn allows for the incoming sidekick to glance off and set up fighter to counter to targets head. This one probably is a bit more practical than the Moldova kick in scenarios where damage is important
Hm, very interesting. I have the feeling that taekwondo hasn't been represented very well in kickboxing and MMA. I feel they're lot of tricks into taekwondo that could help in combat sports
@@joshmailova I think so too but there's obviously a lot of shortcomings to get through because of the rules set has left the modern Olympic sport in a strong "touch fighting" habit. Even though the modern rules do allow for knockouts to end fights in your victory.
Nice love the sliding push kick or side kick. Jumping hook- A fellow countryman of yours at Precision Striking calls it the Gazelle Hook. It’s in his Tyson combos. The Mayweather step through cross. Love that gonna work on that one. Cheers Gabriel
Caleb plant the boxer uses the long right cross and roll also. but he doesn’t step through with the right foot, he just brings it up a bit so that he’s almost square.
Sort of along the lines of a breakdown for the thai sidekick, but I would love a video on exercises to train the leg to be able to even just hold it up straight like you did for so long. I think my side glute muscles/hips are weak and so I struggle to hold side kicks up
I do an independent motion right cross technique. It's where the weapon moves well before the rest of the body. I learned it through Joe Lewis who learned it from Bruce Lee. My foundation, like Lewis is karate. My only concern is that the larger the glove, the less the impact power so it may not translate to the kickboxing that you do. It will work with MMA gloves or less.
Okay second comment about this but yesterday I focused all night on the thai sidekick during sparring and it went extremely well.... almost as if it had been part of my game all along even tho I had no experience with it whatsoever haha. My partner was like damnnnn where did this suddenly come from and didn't know how to deal with it! I've always been a teeper but this somehow works even better for my style. So many thanks for this video man! Would very much apreciate it if you would go more in depth on this amazing kick, cheers!
Thanks for the video, learned a lot especially with the Thai teep that I struggle to pull. often being the shorter fighter I have used the superman jab (GS P like) or the superman Cross successfully, Mike Zambidis is also a fan of it :D
the shifting cross is done in mma a lot by dillashaw, mighty mouse, and dominick cruz. mighy mouse uses it to transition to a single leg or double leg as well.
there is another punch that covers a lot of distance that Pacquiao uses in every fight and in almost every round. After he throws the rear hand he steps or jumps forward with the rear leg throwing his jab. He's hurt and put down many fighters using this technique. Most recently or in his last fight he put down Keith Thurman in the first round using this technique. He also adjusts this jumping jab with the rear foot going forward into a hook or uppercut depending on how his opponents react. Incredible punch and very challenging technique as you have to set it up with the rear hand first or a feint or it becomes too obvious
I think I know how to throw the Thai side kick but I’m willing to bet you’ll have some details and insights that will make it way better so here’s another vote for a detailed Thai side kick video. The leaping hook is a variation on the Gazelle punch famously used by Floyd Patterson. Joe Frazier was another notable proponent (see his knock down of Muhammad Ali in round 15 of their first fight) as were Rocky Marciano and Mike Tyson. As always, fantastic video!
Is there a certain style of kickboxing that certain body types are more inclined to "fit"? In 6ft 1 180...long torso 73 inch reach...shorter legs...is there a style I might find easier to utilize based on my body? I find I get hurt only to my body and my arms cannot seem to cover my sides that well... maybe a video could be about this subject? God bless champ!
Do you have videos on catching kicks? I do boxing and BJJ, but I am lacking in the kickboxing department. I can throw good kicks, knees etc, but I have no trained reflex in terms of kicking defense and countering. I guess the obvious suggestion would probably be to join a kick boxing school haha
I would actually fight at Bantamweight in ONE. It's a 145lbs weigh in and I walk about 153lbs. If I could win that and defend I may consider a move up if everything worked out.

Funny, I have just been experimenting with the side kick on my last sparring day and then I see this! However I was setting it up with a front teep and then transitioning into it while my leg is still partially extended from the teep (I don't put my foot down between the two kicks).
