Yes, stop buying it immediately. Leaves more for the rest of us during the biggest ammo shortage in history.

Hp-38 is a lot like Unique, it cleans up as you approach a maximum load. Currently I'm using Power Pistol and CFE Pistol with great success and I'll stick with them once my 8lb jug of HP-38 is done.

Nice for standard .380 ACP loads too. You can charge north of 2,000 rounds of range ammo with one of those 1 lb cans.

I recently bought 2 1-pound containers of Win231 last month and came up with a load development for my 9mm and 45ACP. I was wondering about the temperature sensitivity of this powder. Also just learned here that it is pretty much HP-38. Thank you very much for the information and your time into this video.

I’ve been using it for over 25 years now, and thought it isn’t one of the highest energy powders, it’s used in my favorite 9mm loads.

Bullseye was the first powder I ever used. I switch to Winchester 231 because it made her better. But you nailed it, a great performer but very very dirty. I

Have you tried W244 yet? It's one of Winchester's newest powder offerings, and is supposed to be a much cleaner burning powder than 231. I've been loading .45 Colts, 9mm, and .38 SPLs with it for a few months here and there. But I unfortunately haven't been able shoot any of them yet. I have lit the powder on fire though, and from that it does appear to burn cleaner than 231, burning with a brighter flame and leaving less residue behind on the metal plate I use. I know that burning in the open isn't a perfectly accurate picture of the same powder burning inside a case. But I think its at least some indication. Hopefully when the range opens back up near me, I'll be able to put my W244 rounds to the ultimate test.

Yes Winchester 231 is very dirty. That's the main reason I looked up what others had to say. I've never tried HP-38 but you say it's the same.

I am normally a unique loader but i used the Hp-38 as my go to powder for non magnum applications, lately I've been developing a cast 40s&w load with 4.6 gns of hp-38 and a lyman 401" 175gn bullet to shoot out of my beretta 96D centurion, i started with 4.0gns and got 760fps alittle on tne weak end but functional. My new load will be 4.6gns and expecting the velocity to be around 840fps.

I'd like to get 1400 primers to go with it. It seems to me that everytime there is any shortage the manufacturers say screw reloaders. We get cut off. Their excuse is all product is going to commercial manufacturing. During normal times we can get product. Any glitch in the system and you are screwed. Maybe shooters should just stay off the range for quite awhile and let these guys think about who they serve. Let their ammo set on the shelves.

    • @Rusty_ok

I sense a little negativity in your comment. Understanding the nature of the industry is a feast or famine cycle, it is in the best interest of the reloading community to “beat them at their own game” so to speak and during the plentiful times stock up.
As I see it there are two things we can do. Support politicians that are strong second amendment advocates, secondly, If things every return to normal stock up.

@@Rusty_ok You're right about my attitude. When things are MORE normal these companies are glad to sell you all the product you want. Not so much when things go the other way. I just think they ought to go a little further to take care of the people that support them in normal times. But, all my whining ain't gonna change a thing!! Lol!

    • @dc4457
      @dc4457 3 года назад

Of course the reloaders get cut off. There are only a few manufacturers of primers, most of whom also manufacture ammunition. If there is a run on their product and they can sell all the ammo they can make, and munition factories will pay virtually any price to get primers because they are literally out of business without them, then every primer they can make is going to manufacturers of commercial ammo. If you know how primers are made, it isn't something they can just open more assembly lines to mass produce. They are practically crafted by hand by a handful of workers with nerves of steel. The primers available to reloaders in normal times are basically the surplus that the ammo companies didn't want.

@@Rusty_ok Actually stocking up is the issue. if people did not live in fear cycles they would buy what they need not over buy which makes it more scarce for everyone. I buy what I need and don't gorge or over buy.
Its the people that buy 20x what they need that keeps prices high. That is why some store are limiting it to 2 boxes of primers per person. People can't control selves so the stores have to.

  • @gunslinger3090

the reason you don't use 231 for magnum loads is that its to hot & it will make the pressure go up & then you run the risk of blowing up your gun. but you can make up a good defense round in 40s&w & 45acp.

If you were to have only one pistol powder win 244 (old 231) is the one to have for 32 acp to colt 45. Next might be unique but it meters poorly on progressives vs 244.

It really is dirty. I thought Unique was dirty but this stuff is even worse. A guy at the range on the bench beside me asked if I was loading with black powder. That's how smoky and filthy it shoots. I can't speak for the accuracy since I'm shooting steel at 20 feet so any hit is a good hit as far as I'm concerned. I don't punch holes in paper, it never made sense to me with a defensive handgun.
