Thanks! I did not know that W231 and HP-38 were the same powder. My 1992 Hodgdon Data Manual No. 26 does not list powders from other manufacturers. (I know, I must be Rip van Winkle)! I first began reloading 9mm with Hercules Unique. It worked just fine, but always left a few unburned flakes in the action, and seemed quite dirty. When I switched to W231, I got more consistent measuring and began to trust my RCBS powder measure far more (even though I weighed every tenth throw). It also burned far cleaner. Too bad primers and powder are in such short supply -- I would be happy to pay $1.45 for a sleeve of 100 primers! Perhaps the cloudy sky messed up your chronograph; it appears from your video that there was not enough contrast between the chrony's sky screen and the natural light from above (much like a flourescent light effect). Be well, Sir.
Hodgdon has owned Winchester Powder and IMR Powder for at least 7 years. Get the Hodgdon Annual Reloading magazine, it covers load data for all three companies. It is easy to see that the loads with HP-38 and W231 are the same. Yes, I have a lot of primers, some a bit old. When friends moved away, they gave me all their reloading supplies. I have to figure out the chronograph problems, was frustrating.
I just tested my first 9mm using Winchester 231. They were 115 gr FMJ and I ran some at 4.3 gr of powder and some at 4.0 gr. The CZ and Beretta cycled everything fine. Looking forward to trying more this week.
@@30-06john It did and it didn't haha. My Chrono was showing 1800 FPS, so something was off. I am confident it's an issue with the Crhonogropher though, and not the ammo itself. I would have noticed an 1800 FPS round coming out of my 9mm.
I use 4.2 gr of 231 under a 124 grain cast truncated cone either lubed n sized or powder coated works in my 995 carbine and my 3" Ruger also works in my youngest sons Taurus, then I have my 'Carbine Load' which is NOT for handguns... Lee 158 gr RFN 38 bullet lubed n sized to .356 and loaded on top of 3.5 gr of 231
Thanks for the catch! I did say during the video 1.5", I really meant to say 1.15". At the end of the video my target had the load I was using with the correct COAL. Thanks for watching!
Good video. I know this is a few years old but thanks for posting.
Glad you found it useful, and thanks for watching!
Thanks!

Yes, chronographs can be finicky.
Lyman indicates min. Is 3.8 gr max 4.9gr.
I am running 4.5-4.6gr.

Those loads sound great, the carbine load does sound warm! Hey, thanks for the info and watching!
Does he have HP-38 for 115 grain jacketed?? Can’t find it anywhere
Go to the Hodgdon Load Data website, they have load data for HP-38 and 115 jacketed bullets. Happy New Year and thanks for watching!
My shield likes 4.2 g of HP 38, while my canik tp9sa likes 4.6 g both with the 115 g berry bullet.
Sounds like good loads! Thanks for watching!
My canik requires more powder than any pistol I have to cycle reliably
OAL 1.5? Check that, mines 1.09-1.15...

For 115gr bullet the bottle recommended 51 gr of propellent. The Lyman manual recommends min. 3.8 gr and max 4.9 gr.
What do you use? 4.5-4.7gr?
In that video I used 4.6 grains of W231/HP-38 with a Berrys 124gr. Worked fine. Hey, appreciate you watching!
@@30-06john great video. Thanks for creating good content and helping us learn.
primers are the worst to find
I agree, hopefully, things will calm down and supplies will stay in stock.
