I competed a lot at IPSC in Maryland/Virginia back in the 80s and 90s. Saw Jerry shoot one day and got enthused. Went and bought a used Model 19 and twisted a 6 inch bull barrel on it, bought a nice speed holster and speed loaders from Brownell's and proceded to tear it up. In those days the courses were definitely set for High capacity auto loaders. I rarely beat any of them but I came so close that I was getting rounds of applause at every station and grew a small crew of followers. Jerry rocks the wheel gun!
I've used a broad selection of powders and primers. I've gotten to the point that I can use just about any powder, primer, case or projectile to get the job done. This requires a lot of reading and study material though. Nice video, and hope to see you out there, Jerry.
Only takes looking in a reloading manual which anyone can do.
@@Dougarrowhead not every manual has every powder. That's where the research comes in
When Jerry said he shot a ton of H335 he was being modest, I hear He's actually over 2.
Extremely well done and a study of gun powders. Would like to see more like this because to learn about reloading makes us all safer Reloaders. And who better to learn from then a man who I call mister firearm. The great Jerry
jerry sprinkles a little bit in his coffee each morning.
Blue Dot, HS-6, Power Pistol - high velocity pistol loads. If you don't have a lot of time, you get a large safety margin for standard loads, but the trade off is more recoil than you'd get with a faster burning powder.
TiteGroup, Clays - match or practice pistol/revolver loads
H335 - bulk 233/5.56mm
Varget - .308Win, .223 precision ammo
I remember being blown away when I first started reloading. No pun intended.
The powder that I was using to reload my 7 mm Magnum looked like replacement Flints for a Zippo lighter.
When I first started and I was Green... I thought gunpowder was powder. Lol!
If you are into guns you truly haven't lived until you have reloaded.
Finding the right recipe for something can be so frustrating..
but in the end when you get that cartridge to do what you wanted to do...
There's no better feeling in in the world.
A coworker showed me something interesting the other day. All Hogdon and IMR powders are made by ADI (Australian defence industries) and sold under different brands for different markets. Really cool.
Not necessarily... many of them are made in Australia, but many are also made at the General Dynamics plant in Florida or in Canada.
@@desertfox2020 Yes, and all australian made powders are no longer available in Europe, except Titegroup, i think.
@@desertfox2020 I bought several jugs of unbranded powder, and the safety sheet was marked from General Dynamics. I got pistol flake powder that pretty much was Green Dot just without the colorant. I actually preferred that over the canister grade!
I was at an IDPA match and the SO asked if I was using Titegroup. He said that he could smell it. Ha, ha.
Really explained why barrel lengths were so long in the cordite days, thanks Jerry!
Yes sir! I love my Titegroup, CFE pistol and Longshot from Hodgdon. I only reload for my handguns and these are great powders. Great video Jerry!
One of the reaspns cordite(sp?) Was so bad for the bore is the residue contains alkaline salts that draw and hild moisture inside the barrel causing it to rust.
Highly recomend cleaning your gun with amonia or balistol/#9 if you ever fire surplus or specialty ammo that uses cordite.
I've been outside shooting, for the last 3 hours. Went thru a box of 550 bulk, with my TX-22. Been running drills, and working on my accuracy. GREAT .22 pistol to train with, if you haven't tried it. Don't let the name "Taurus" fool you. This is the best training pistol out there, by a MILE. Approaching 7,000 rounds, and I just experienced my 2nd light strike today. I'm not joking... This pistol is unbelievably reliable, even with any brand of "bulk" ammo. It has the same trigger pull(slightly under 4lbs), and short reset, that my Canik TP9 SFx has, so it's not a challenge to switch guns. I shoot 3-5 days a week, so I appreciate using .22 to keep cost down. Gun snobs are missing out... I like my TX-22 as much as I like my Canik TP9 SFx, and that's saying something. I know this has nothing to do with the video, but I just wanted to share that info. lol Jerry is a BEAST!!!!!!!
Get a progressive reloading machine, buy your supplies in bulk, and you can shoot 9mm for less than .22lr costs
Here in Italy american powders are very expensive. Very good widely used powders are Lovex(distributed by Fiocchi in Italy). For high end stuff we do use Vihtavuori: N105(357mag), N150(308w), N340(9x21).
HS6 and H110 is my favorite for .44 MAG.
For medium and heavy shotshells I love to use HS6 and PB for loading Slugs and Buckshot. For Birdshot I love using PB and Green Dot.
Never had the chance to use Blue Dot and Longshot yet as powder is hard to get over here in Guam. I reload for hunting.
Little off the subject of reloads, but the other day my neighbor walked out on his porch and fired a SKS once turned and went back in. If I hadn't seen the rifle id swore it was a black powder gun cause of the cloud. It had rained earlier in the day cloudy outside about 60. I asked what he was using and it was a old can of Russian ammo he ordered it was dated 1972
Been using that 244 for a few months now because it's all they had on the shelf and it's great
I use whatever my gun likes. I have IMR's, Hodgens, Winchester and Accurate powders. Over 55 years of reloading, I have never found one brand that shoots up to MY expectations, which is usually tinier groups than most people can shoot.
When loading .223 for competition, I use Varget for the 69 gn Sierra MK and Reloder 15 for the heavier 77 gn Sierra MK.
I love this. Jerry makes shooting a science that needs more on youtube
I think it is time for Jerry Miculek to prove himself in 3-gun, I request that he do a full and timed course using Zip 22, L85A1, Cobray Terminator.
WW 244 is a new one for me!
Over the years of reloading I've settled on just a few powders for most of my firearms; WW 231, WW748, WW 296, IMR 4198, Alliants Unique and Bluedot as well as 1680. I have a pound of H335 but have used it only for the 7.62x39mm cartridge up to this point.
Thanks, Jerry for the new info!
WoW
I haven't seen cordite since the mid 70s and it was also from a British 303 round we took apart.
I like the unique and blue dot in my shotgun reloads. Red dot goes a long way, Iv'e used as little as 14 grains with 1oz. slugs.
I use 5 of those, and about 6 more Hodgdon that you don't have on your table. About 6 or 7 from Alliant, and a couple from Accurate.
Winchester 296 for my 357 ammo, Varget and H4895 for my rifles. I have accurate#2, and #7 for my other pistol calibers.
I reload all my 5.56 and 7.62x39 with FFg black powder. I do it old skool.
I...wasn't even aware of cordite. Thanks for teaching me something new, Jerry!
I use H335 for my 300 grain Lehigh Defense Xrtemepenetrator 45-70 loads.
I'm just getting started on reloading, but luckily I have a friend who's been doing it for 35 years.
Get the books and read em' , It could mean your life.
@@liljohnp132 got em. Thanks.
IMR 4350 or H-4350 has been my go-to powder for my 7 x 57 and 140 gr Bullets either Hornaday or Nosler Partition for almost 5 decades now. A lot of Deer, Elk, Moose, and caribou fell to that load over the years. A Federal 210, or 215 M primer for winter in Alaska, and a Winchester-Western Case. Very consistent from lot to lot. Rifle deer starts for me in a week, November 1. I get to shoot at least two and If I want two additional if I want the extra tags.
When I first started handloading the very first powder I used was Titegroup, and I still shoot a lot of it. These days I'm liking CFE-223 quite a bit too!
TG is pretty darn economical, needing about 15-20% less powder for same velocities compared to 231 in .45 ACP; in other words, an 8 lb keg gives a few extra thousand reloads...
I got an 8lb jug of Universal for 9mm because it was cheaper. Seems fine but I'm wondering if I should switch to Tightgroup because that's what most people use.
Just started getting into cfe223. Groups are Damn good using 26.5gr for 55gr match bullets. Only weird thing Is my zero is now 6mil left from using lc 556 surplus ammo
@@michaelglenn2468 -- If the Universal is working for you keep using it until you run out, and then switch to Titegroup.
@@4g63tpowered -- 6 mil? Wow, that's a hell of a shift! I've never heard of that happening before. Not saying that it never has, just that I haven't heard of it.
Those six cases of PMC ammo need shot up! I'm tired (jealous)of seeing them year after year LOL
Good video it's not easy when most off hodgdon powders are ADI
I use a variety of powders since I load for everything from 32 S&W to 458 Win Mag, but rifle recipes lean heavily towards those that are less affected by temperatures, since I may shoot in -35 to 105 degrees here in northern Wyoming. Hodgdon Extreme powders are my long gun go-to, although 45-70 smokeless loads for Quigley get Accurate 5744. For defensive handgun loads I use powder with flash suppressants, since most defensive shootings take place in low light. Silhouette is my top choice for that role.
Funny how he pulls out W244 from behind like its the hidden secret. W244 is fantastic for competition pistol loads to meet power factor in 9, 40, and 45. Even more versatile than Titegroup.
Hodgdon BLC2 for 5.56 and 308. Inexpensive, one powder does them both. I get better than 1/2 MOA from my precision 308 with BLC2.
Titegroup for 9mm. Inexpensive, good groups, meters well.
I like Tight group, Clays and Universal for my 12 gauge and 9 mm..
I haven't reloaded in 20 years or so. Something I'm starting to look at again. l'll have to find me a Progressive loader when I start back into reloading.
Also find the Data for each powder as I'm sure a lot has changed since last I loaded ammo.
Yep, its changed a little, mostly the charge weights are more conservative, and the powders have changed. Principle stays the same of course. I use a Dillon 550 press, works great for me
I love my hornady ap press. Tons of extra options like auto case and bullet feeding. Its literally a home ammo plant..
CFE pistol, H335, and Varget are my go to powders.
Ive used a lot of those powders Jerry had out. I recently went through a jug of H322 for 223. it was wonderful, low SD, temperature insensitive, metered well for a stick.
I love H-335 for my .223 loads and Reloader 19 for my 30-06 also I like Winchester 296 for my 357 and 44 magnum loads
My go to powder is bullseye mainly 380acp
When Jerry says he’s shot a ton of it he’s not exaggerating.
Onse again envy you, Americans:) We also do not use match heads for reload (any more:)) but temperature sensitivity and burning purity of russian powders could be better.
Remoluger 564 ... Being presumptive, you did a great job on the comment. You can improve it quite a bit by editing the first word.
Hodgdon CFE PIstol and Hodgdon CFE Rifle
Jerry is the man, but Hodgdon clearly sponsors him. Lol!!
Vihtavouri is hands down the best
I exclusively use Hodgdon rifle powder, the Extreme technology is very good and in a place like Colorado with massive temperature swings it has made my ammo more consistent.
I wish they would apply the Extreme technology to the pistol powders, I use Vihtavuori 3N37 for my 9x19 loads, it is far less temperature sensitive than any pistol powder I have tested. It is about 25% more costly than a comparable Hodgdon/IMR/Winchester powder but worth it.
I have been using the first five powders on your bench for 20+ years
Titegroup hasnt been out 20 years.
H322 baby, single digits BC, screaming bullets and tight groups. 👍👍
Love me some Bullseye and Unique but I do use TiteGroup with some Winchester 231 in reserve.
Viht N140 for heavy bullet 5.56 NATO loads. Works great with a 75gr Hornady match bullet.
I don’t get to shoot much so the only powder I use is foot powder. Thanks Jerry! 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
Long hours at the reloading bench can lead to posterior chaffing so, I use Johnson's Baby Powder
H110 41gr 450 BM bolt 250gr
HS-6 9mm and 45 colt 1873
CFE 223 for AR
I load H4895 is a bunch of different calibers. It's my most used powder.
Very cool Jerry 👍
Clays powder is awesome !!!!!!! It is what i use for shotgun reloading.
Haven't started reloading yet, but I am keeping my .270 brass from the new Savage Axis I just got myself. Smoooooooth.
Josh Brown if you haven’t already, dump the Factory axis stock. Mine was warped slightly from the factory and was hurting my groups no matter what I loaded for my .308 axis it wouldn’t shoot. Put on a Boyd’s wood stock and my groups immediately shrunk.
@@chevyon37s I've thought about it, but it's not in the bank account right now (three lovely kids :D ). I've actually perused the Boyd's stocks, thanks for the tip.
My dad handed down a 20 year old .270 savage to me a few years ago
He'd prob never gave it to me had he not changed the stock, " that darn thing kicked like a mule" I think the original didnt have the proper angle to meet the shoulder
I guess maybe savage isn't so good at the stock thing
Their barrels are on point tho 👌
I like H335 for my 223/5.56 loads .
Vihtavuori N320 Powder.
I have 5 of those powders on the reloading shelf right now.
I love lil gun for loading the 458 socom
Another great video, thanks Jerry!
Jerry, have you tried IMR8208XBR in the .223? If I had to choose only one powder for .223, that would be it. Great Job!
IMR 4166 for .308 & 7.62 NATO, try some, its magical!!!
I only use CFE 223, CFE Pistol, and Longshot for my shotgun shells. No Other!!
W231/H38, 5.5 grns, 230 gn Xtreme 45ACP projectiles...
H335 or varget for my 223 and 6.5 grendel. Reloaders for my 7mm mag.
I use Winchester 231 and that is what I have always used.
I use trail boss for my .45-70 and my .45 Colt, then I use BLC-2 for my .308
Thanks Jerry
i use h110 for my 357 loads
H414 has proven very good in my 7mm08 and so far posted the fastest velocity in testing of 2710 fps with a 160 grain bullet but is most accurate at 2550 fps and killed 4 hogs on my channel with that load
H4350 works very well also at the same velocity of 2550 fps for the 160 grain sierra BTHP also very accurate
I shoot competition with tight group. CFE pistol for practice.
I use Vhitavuori N150 in my .325wsm
Very much appreciated Sir.
I think you're beyond Pro Shooter, you should put Jedi Master after your name.
Hodgdon powder really give some old lever guns new power
Titegroup gives you a lot for very small powder charges.
Bought a 4lb jug of titegroup 5 years ago. Its still over half full. Probably loaded over 1000 rounds with it.
Winchester 748
I dont want a bunch of different powders for various calibers, bullseye for pistols and imr 4064 for the rest.
That was interesting...and useful to know.
h4350 for 6.5 creedmoor. ES of 9 last time I shot.
Jerry, this was the only video of yours that was a total let down. You always go big. I would have thought you get your powders delivered special in 55 gal drums. I'm deflated. :)
flysubcompact .... Lmao! That was great. haha
He refills those jugs from the drum! el oh el
I am running Alliant Sports Pistol burns clean and consistently.
“Sport Pistol is what Titegroup wants to be when it grows up”
Dam good vid...and yes I do this at home..
Very interesting
huh, I thought cordite looked more like licorice. I guess with that slow burn time the longer the barrel the more power.
What about the 300 win mag
Also the cordite(stick) powder was used in lots of military ammo even up into the 50s and the fact was the original powder fouling the M14/M16 had WAS from stick powder.
The reason it was developed and used was they could make miles of it, cut it into specific lengths and drop it in the case and install bullet and tada bullet.
BUT it trashed the gas system on M16 as it's ports were smaller. According to an armorer that works on local government base in armory refurbishing guns daily the M14 was 7.62x51/.308 and used a slightly different design gas system and didn't foul nearly as bad.
And YES if properly speced powder was used a full auto AR COULD run a few thousand rounds with minimal cleaning BUT IF YOU WATCH MOST MILITARY MOVIES, somewhere they usually have some hung ho GI racing to disassemble and reassemble the M16 FAST.
Reason why, quick and dirty field strip to address an issue stopping rifle from firing.
I have torn down some early 60s 5.56 and guess what, cordite. My cousin has his dad's first generation AR15 MINUS. Some military recommended additions like ejection port cover, forward assist, no bayonet lug, Bakelite furniture vs plastic, (Bakelite is brittle and cracks easy Armalite(Stoner)/Colt redesigned M16 to use more common plastics. They also upgraded the heat treat, made mods to barrels, sights, magazines, well over 1000 when contract was awarded.
And that's when Armalite figured out they didn't have production facilities to provide actual order. And to government certify forging plants and other parts production to meet demand was too long a process, hence they "sold" contract to Colt, and history embraced the M16 for last 60ish yrs. And civilian citizens and retired military, being enthusiastic about the rifle and familiar they purchased AR platforms, when patents fell away the "aftermarket" started producing parts and pieces.
Whoa, good vide Jerry
Was about to do that at home until he said don’t
Great vid....I really like tite group.
that cfe.223 is the most inconsistent powder i've tried. horrible groups and horrible standard of deviation
H335 at timeline 1:06
Im starting up reloading to so any tips help. Right now i wanna start with 40 5.56 and 10mm. The 10mm because nobody by me sells it.
be careful with titegroup, it's small and therefore easy to overload. Welcome to the rabbit hole Tom!
For the 40 tite group or w231 .. for the 5.56 Varget works great. I have never reloaded for the 10mm but I am sure the w231 and the tite group would work well .. IMR and Winchester make some good powders also..i would be surprised if he didn't have a few pounds of bullseye and w231 behind the desk somewhere....I have used w231 in every pistol round I have ever reloaded from 9mm ,38 special, 45 and the 357 mag... check the reloading books for the charge weights
@@geetarmanpete ok ill make sure to stay away from that for awhile.
@@Paul-gd1qw ill make sure to check them all. I have a lot of reading to do before i start it all.
@@tomjones7285 Just be careful and you'll be fine. It's a matter of paying great attention, which is important to every aspect of rolling your own. I suggest JiuJitsu2000 RUclips channels reloading videos, and find local reloaders willing to talk...
