Listen to Lena, I'm mildly deaf from not using hearing protection in a factory environment during my youth. It's not as simple as losing your hearing over time. Even though I started using hearing protection in my 40's, at 50 I started getting tinnitus (ringing in the ears). At 64 the tinnitus is so bad it that in a quiet room it sounds like the chorus of frogs in spring. I can hear most people fine, it's just that I can't make out what they are saying through the background noise. conversation sounds like a foreign language in many cases, especially TV if the volume is too low. To keep from raising the volume to stupid levels, I now have to use subtitles. It really does impact your life. I say this because nobody explained to me in my youth what really happens. I hope to help young readers of this comment to avert hearing loss and thank Lena for pointing out the importance of hearing protection. It's not just for the shooting range.

I don't have a daughter but would love to adopt a teenage daughter for one night when she brings her first serious boyfriend home. Sitting across the table from the boy giving him the talk about respect while cleaning my shotgun in front of him. By the time I am finished he would be changing his underwear and there would be four empty seats between them at the movies. He would have her home 1 hour before curfew to be safe.

He sat there cleaning a rather large revolver, staring at me. I wave an awkward teen-aged mumble of "hello" to him. He didn't even blink.
