Personally though, I stuck with the mount on my EDC, as I don't like co-witness personally (can't help wanting to align sights with the red dot) and it gives me the option to switch back later if I want.

Thank you for these tips. I’ve been a firearms instructor since the late 80’s, mostly for Law Enforcement. I’m retired now and am instructing civilians. I’m 62 and the eyes sure aren’t what they used to be. I recently purchased a Glock G45MOS and topped it with a Holosun. I’m struggling. I keep looking for the front sight. Huge learning curve. Having been in an on duty shooting, I can testify that the officer is looking at the suspect, in my case his handgun. I don’t remember seeing my sight but my shots were accurate.
Does anyone but me notice how it seems like it is a second nature to both of them when they draw their weapons. And I loved how she settled her feet before drawing.

One trick I used when starting with a dot and still now. I find the front sight and use it as a reference point on presentation. It helps me find the dot quicker, which may be a personal thing.

Maybe run a main red dot + offset red dot (becoming common in PCC, good for certain applications like shooting on the move or around barricades) or LPVO + offset red dot.
I just threw my first dot on a Ruger MK4 22/45 to start training with one. It is definitely a challenge. I'm not doing an MOS until I know I like a dot.
Jerry, you should have Lena help with more of your videos. She's funny and she makes you look better. PowPow. I'm joking, but she is an amazing shot too. Years of learning from Jerry. Amazing teacher of the gun!. Keep the videos coming!!!
Switched to a red dot about 3 years ago (60) for the usual reason, eyesight. It took about 3 months to get the draw stroke back under control. What cracked the code was trying to pick up the front sight in peripheral vision and drive it smoothly to the target, picking it up early in the presentation. The dot started appearing on the target earlier and earlier. Shooting better now than I was in my 30s... Great video, thank yall. Cheers
I'm confused about a lot of things stated in this video. "Don't stare at this" (aka - the target)... yet that's one of the benefits of RDS's... target-focus which is how our predator vision as a human works naturally to begin with. Getting "sucked into the dot" would seem to happen when I'm NOT focused on the target. Also the contention of "dominant eye alignment". It's a dot... if used effectively with target focus, I have found for me that it makes the idea of "eye dominance" almost irrelevant because again, you're not focusing on the dot, but on the target. The dot simply moves up into the vision and when it gets superimposed onto the target you finish your prepped trigger press. Am I misunderstanding what Jerry & Lena are saying or are we differing?
I decided this year I would shoot red dots exclusively (BTW we the same age you know). The advice read from several well known competitors said to focus on the target (threat) and not on the dot, or look at your target and superimpose the dot on the target, don't stare or focus on the dot. Am I being told wrong? Are you saying I should focus on the dot (like I do a front iron sight) instead of the target? I've been experimenting and haven't seen too much difference other than time to first shot. I learned a lot from you and Donnie back in the 80's when we shot together and I trust your opinion more than anyone.
Lucku you! I’m 47 and all the sudden I’m missing the targets because of my eyes. Maybe a video on what you’ve done to hep hit the target since your eyes have went down hill...? Thx for the video(s).
thank you. no one else realizing that jerry telling everyone to not look at the target is incorrect. thats the only thing you should be looking at. super impose the dot
The problem is that different instructors say different things. There’s a lot of instructors who say that when using an optic, you should be completely threat focused and just put the dot over the threat. I’m not saying that you all are wrong, just that there seems to be no consensus on how to use an optic (at least not on a pistol).
It's interesting that the very top red dot shooters say they are totally "target focused" and "target focus" is also a thing with Limited category shooters at the top level. I would say things may have changed since this video was made but would love to hear Jerry's take on that.
Jerry, I guarantee there is never a dull moment around that daughter of yours! At the end of the video, You are like I'm done and she is still pow powing with her fingers. Oh to be young!!! Love the dynamic duo! Excellent video! Keep'em coming!
I was gifted with very good eye sight for many decades . Now I .. Need a Red Dot so many brands and models huge price diffeances too .. Seems they could desing a hand gun where the optical could stay in a fixed spot.. it seems to me that getting ramed back and fourth would damage or mess up the zero .. The Ruger Mark III has such a design but is only 22 cal
I went with my buddy, who's an airborne ranger, to the range a few months back. I remember him telling me about his experiences with different red dot sights. Specifically how he had an issue with some being polarized and not being able to see the reticle while running drills with any sunglasses on that were polarized. Thoughts on this Jerry?
Specifically thought he was having battery issues because it was happening when he rotated his firearm, this caused the light waves from the red dot to cross the polarity of his sunglasses, which like sunlight, was then blocked out.
Question, if you are a Rt hand shooter but left Eye Dominate does RDS mean I would have to present a little skewed left for speed finding it? Currently I like Bigger front night sights bright like XS F8 or XS Dot
Great Video, haven't done more than couple hundred w a RDS, but maybe someday will, and seems this info will help any presentation be better instead of fishing or bowling.
Love how Lena sets her feet and wiggles her butt before she pulls iron. Great technique for her, but I got some weird looks at the range when I tried it.
It's great his daughter followed her father, as many kids will reject what their parents do. Having the greatest shooter who ever lived as a dad is cool thing. I met him once, seemed like a hell of a nice guy too.
I’m a little confused. Isn’t one of the greatest advantages of a RDS, the ability to remain target focused? They’re saying “don’t focus too hard on the target” but that’s the opposite of everything I’ve learned with shooting a red dot. Genuinely interested in an explanation
Biggest thing that helped me when I transitioned to a red dot on my handgun - Just draw the handgun and think of lining up your irons and the dot magically appears. If you are used to shooting a lot and running iron sights, I found this to be the easiest trick for me.
The learning curve to a dot is a little steep to start with, but once you build consistency everything else flows much more easily. That translates very well to irons too, since your sights will line up much more consistently, which allows for faster shots on target from the draw. One thing I found helpful was being able to see what the gun is doing through all phases of shooting. The dot tells me how the gun is moving if I move, lets me see if I'm swinging to hard or too softly between targets, and how the gun is moving during recoil. Trijicon and Holosun make very durable dots, so that's not as big of a deal anymore. Finding holsters are a little tougher, but most companies making kydex concealment holsters are making sure that their products are red dot capable from the start now. It's more of a problem if you're trying to find a duty holster, since the only game in town is currently Safariland with their RDS series (and the only ones I'd likely recommend anyway). There's a ton of good information out there regarding the benefits of an MRDS. This is a great primer to it, and I'd recommend checking out Aaron Cowan at Sage Dynamics and Scott Jedlinski at Modern Samurai Project for more pointers.
I'm not a handgun guy, but you made it so that even I could understand it. Very well put together video. Lena is so lucky to have one of....no, THE greatest teachers ever!!

Like the Dynamic Duo tips. Gettt you some, and keep em coming.
She's a natural. Listen to her Jerry, she will whip ya into shape for the camera. Love you guys.
Lucku you! I’m 47 and all the sudden I’m missing the targets because of my eyes. Maybe a video on what you’ve done to hep hit the target since your eyes have went down hill...?
Thx for the video(s).
The advantage of a dot is your eyes can stay focused on the target, and in a self defense scenario, your eyes will focus on the threat
thank you. no one else realizing that jerry telling everyone to not look at the target is incorrect. thats the only thing you should be looking at. super impose the dot
i love how lena and jerry both have there own style...lena i learn as much from you as i do from you dad...thats saying alot
Good God.., its like Jerry 30 years in the past who decided to have a sex change.
Andy, She definitely can’t deny her dad!
@@granitestateman942 No milkman involved there.
@@granitestateman942 I bet her first words were Smith & Wesson.
The problem is that different instructors say different things. There’s a lot of instructors who say that when using an optic, you should be completely threat focused and just put the dot over the threat.
I’m not saying that you all are wrong, just that there seems to be no consensus on how to use an optic (at least not on a pistol).
Jerry, I'm so glad you don't wiggle your rear end when getting ready to shoot. That would just be weird. But with Lena, it makes perfect sense.
Lena is a doll... great, fun personality and an awesome shooter... thank you Jerry for encouraging Lena to bless us with her self...
I can’t imagine Jerry in Canada.
Why not?
Vrealon Handguns are restricted by default, and you can’t take them out into the woods to plink. The only place you can use them is at the range.
Watch your "perifiyal" vision. These sights are not "nucular".
You know damn well that she was cheeky because she was with her dad. Cute.
I t totally love the Daddy, daughter duo. She's pretty too. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you both !!! I am a 73 year young (lol) shooter and am preparing to make this "jump" and your video was EXTREMELY helpful !! Thanks again !!!
Wow, poetry in motion Lena - amazing how practice perfect looks.
I really enjoy seeing yall due videos together. A very nice blend of old school and new school.
Well nice to see Miss Lena on here. I guess there are some good things about this virus thing.
Love how Lena sets her feet and wiggles her butt before she pulls iron. Great technique for her, but I got some weird looks at the range when I tried it.
Rofl!
It's great his daughter followed her father, as many kids will reject what their parents do. Having the greatest shooter who ever lived as a dad is cool thing. I met him once, seemed like a hell of a nice guy too.
It is kinda interesting how you have "young" and "old" styles but, the same training and family. Love the dynamic duo
I’m a little confused. Isn’t one of the greatest advantages of a RDS, the ability to remain target focused? They’re saying “don’t focus too hard on the target” but that’s the opposite of everything I’ve learned with shooting a red dot. Genuinely interested in an explanation
The explanation is, unfortunately, jerry is giving bad advice here. im shocked lena, shooting for sig, is co signing too. keep doing it the right way
Lena speaks what she's thinking. Good training tool. Thanks
Great vid! Awesome job you two!
Pew pew! could life be any more perfect? at the range with your little girl
Why the debate? Red dots are for range games thus range toys. Real world use only iron sights are used. Enough said......
I was taught focus on the target, present the gun and look thru the window putting dot on target. I've had a red dot on my pistol for over a year.
Jerry has some strong Genetics, she looks just like him, frame build and all
Two of my favorite people, whom I've never met. Excellant teachers and I love seeing this father and daughter's relationship.
ANOTHER AWESOME AND INFORMATIVE VIDEO .
THANKS YA'LL,
(IT'S BEEN A MONTH + IN QUARANTINE IN THE HIGH DESERT OF CALIFORNIA THIS SUCKS ,BUT IT COULD BE WORSE)
GOD BLESS YOU AND ALL OF YOUR LOVED ONES
STAY SAFE ,BOTH ON AND OFF OF THE RANGE
I love how Jerry is a true American icon🙌❤️Father, husband, crack shot, i'd take you as Our spokesman...
A very good team to explain things you complement each other well! Can I have some more, please.
8:41😬 o think it’s because there ARE poorly trained for that scenario
Most criminals aren't trained. Ammo costs money. Spray and pray is their philosophy. Just like Terrorist.
She is guna be worlds best grandmother
Have an astigmatism so red dots aren't really an option.
I would love to hear from you professionals on lasers please
