New to reloading, about a year 1/2. Did some research, purchased some reloading books, settled on CFE Pistol as my first powder. I consider myself lucky. I’ve since loaded .380 auto, .357 mag and thousands of 9mm. Very happy with it. Thanks Gavin for all your knowledge, deep dives and great content. Oh ya, I’m loading with a Lee loadmaster.
Gavin, thank you for your commitment to educating the reloading community. Your videos are very informative and professionally done. I always learn something new. Keep up the great work!
CFE Pistol is also great for 380 ACP and 32 HR Mag. 380 ACP was actually the first cartridge that I used CFE Pistol for. It is probably the best pistol powder for use in progressive presses.
Yep, I use it for “performance” .380 loads, and it does very well. Meters beautifully. I could see it being a great performer in the .32 Mag, too - similar max pressures to .380 and some more case volume to work with.
I have used it with 44 Mag, 357 Mag, 38 Spl, 45 ACP, 380 ACP, and 9mm. It is a great full power powder for the auto cartridges. In the mag revolvers it made some nice mid range practice ammo and I loaded about 500 38 Plus P loads and had a great time. I am looking for more of it now. Out of stock everywhere in my area.
One of my favorite 40SW loads is 200gr bullets over 4.75gr CFE Pistol for about 950fps. 180-200gr 40SW is possibly the most underappreciated cartridge combinations in shooting.
40S&W is a great cartridge. Nice compromise between 9mm and 45ACP, good velocity and bullet weight with decent capacity without the need for a huge pistol.
Downloaded 40s are softer than 9s. I shocked three different HK VP9 shooters when they shot my VP40. Power factor of the 40 loads were about 140. One of the 9s was factory 9 loads of 115gr/1150fps. No contest. That shooter said Smoooth=40 and exclaimed "Violent!" after his first shot with his 9. In a pair of HK P30L in 9 and 40 the 40 was a little softer relative to reduced power 9mm reloads using 135gr jacketed vs my powder coated 173gr 40s.
Love your channel, and the CFE pistol powder. For my CZ shadow 2 I use 3.7gr under a 147gr Campro with a Federal primer. Great recoil impulse for fast follow up . Love it!
I’m about to do my first loads with CFE pistol for 45 ACP and 9mm. Always nice to have a detailed video like this to learn a little more about the powder prior to testing.
Do be careful with double charge, with CFE Pistol on 45 ACP, it is possible and dangerous -- so I always weight check loaded rounds for anything more than 4gr diff. Trust me, a lesson learnt hard way.
@@SDMacMan I’m loading 230 grainers, and it looks like CFE Pistol can get up there in velocity decently enough with the heavier bullets. From what I’m reading Ramshot Enforcer can get insane velocities with 230 grain bullets at standard pressure (somewhere around 1000-1050 FPS) but takes huge charges and will beat you and the gun up in the process.
@@YuSun much appreciated on that tip. I will be loading on a Zero turret press and I weigh every charge so I think I’ll be okay. If I get it set up on my Dillon I’ll use a powder check station. I started using trailboss for 38 special to help minimize the double charge risk.
@@michaelcheshareck3275 You get more consistency with faster powders. But if you're looking for +P rounds, CFE will definitely get you there. Do your gun and brass a favor though and get a heavier recoil spring. I wouldn't use Enforcer, unless you want half your powder blowing out the muzzle unburnt.
CFE Pistol is a wonderful and safe powder to use for building up 9mm defensive load recipes when you are trying to squeeze every last bit of FPS out of the case. Good stuff.
Would you mind giving us some educated information about reloading PCC in 9 mm P plus with 124 GR HOLLOW POINT. I WOULD appreciate... Ruger PC9 carbine has an 18 1/2 inch barrel in Canada and 16 inch. In USA. Thank you for your time.😊
It only makes sense to not allow yourself to be distracted during the loading process..turn off your radio and phone to prevent over charging...safety first!
For me, a bit of music helps me focus by drowning out external noises. But, I couldn’t agree more with your core message - when you’re reloading, you’re reloading. Full stop. In the interest of safety, I would add one technique that I try to apply, which is to dump out the last _few_ rounds/loads if I’m interrupted by a person, pet, event, etc. Pilots are trained to restart a checklist if they’re ever interrupted before it’s completed. Redoing a bit of work is annoying, but restarting is cheap compared to dealing with the aftermath of an accident.
Just got 2 more pounds of CFE Pistol a few days ago. Finally able to restock . was going to order more. But I wanna make sure everyone else gets a chance to get it.
As a first time reloader, I got CFE Pistol for reloading 9mm, 115gn, berry's jacketed and hornady 115 XTP HP, loading them using Dillon RL550C with Lee carbide dies. I don't think I will ever use any other powder. Very happy with this. I just got myself a 8Lb jug.
I use cfe pistol some, power pistol has been my go to for a long time, they both work great ,I need to do more testing on CFE P, great video men see you on the next one.
I just bought a pound because it was available and looks like it can replace my win231 as a do all pistol powder. Looking forward to loading with it. Thanks for sharing!
I load 45 Auto+P, for my 45Auto AR and my FN-FNX Tactical! CFE Pistol produces some of the highest velocity rounds in the Hornady manual, for 45 Auto. I really like this powder, I bought an 8lb bottle of it. I am going to try it in my 45 colt, and maybe my 454 Casull as well.
I've used CFE Pistol 5.1 & 4.5 grains respectively on 9mm, 115 & 124 gr. The setup I use is a Hornady LNL AP press, with RCBS dies and a 3D printed case feeder. So far that is the only pistol caliber that I reload for, but I've got some hungry 9's. Now I need primers more than anything else.
Great middle of the road powder for 9mm and 45 acp. I’ve loaded a few pounds of it and never an issue. Oh and I’m just a poor man with a single stage LEE press 😂
So far I've only loaded some 38 spec & +p with it using Lee turret & perfect powder measure. Going to try it in 40s&w soon as well as 9mm. The 38 spec performed well with it & it flowed great in the lee powder measure
I use it for my 9mm loads, but I was disappointed in how it performed in my 357 sig loads. Even at max load it wasn’t even hitting minimum load fps projections. I use Longshot for my 357 sig loads now and really like it.
It's an excellent powder for the .40 S&W, although the copper fouling eraser bit is lost on me, since I load powder-coated cast lead bullets almost exclusively.
Using a Dillon 650 on 9mm 10mm 40S&W 45ACP 45Colt. It meters extremely well in my Dillon 650. I am still on the fence about the CFE part of the powder. Still working on that one.
Excellent video guys I really enjoyed this one in particular almost as much as I did the CFE 223. I typically used Unique and Bullseye for all my hand gun and shot gun needs but I like the idea of one powder to do every hand gun round generally speaking. I dont shoot a lot of Magnums and when I do I like something a little closer to the tame side of things instead of ludicris velocities. This sounds like the cats meow. I am seriously digging Homies 11 grs in that 44 Mag...that sounds like just the ticket!
Im a huge fan of the Trail Boss!!! Its another one of my favorites for all the reasons you mentioned despite the fact I dont shoot Cowboy Action matches. I just dont use it enough to buy it in bulk or keep ;arge quantities of it like I do about 4-5 other powders.
Ray - I saw that 12 grains of CFE Pistol was the max recommended load for the 44 magnum and 240 gr jacketed bullets, so I chose 11 grains and oh my goodness! Easy to shoot and accurate. I think that's the first time my 44 has out-shot my 45 1911 pistol!
Looks like something I would like to try in my 9mm and 10mm handguns, if my local gun shop has any. FYI, one powder that I have used for many years in my .357 and .41 mag. is Win 296. I have had great results with this powder in both magnum calibers. If you haven't used it, give it a try, I think you will be very surprised with the results. A friend also uses 296 in his .44 mag with equally good results. Thanks Gavin for another great video..👍👍
Great content. Just as a suggestion, it would be very interesting to do a study on volume of powder at a given grain weight. This can be done by using a powder dipper and weighing grain weight of each powder in the dipper.
I've loaded that load ..I didn't take it to the max ..I went to 1100 & ended up running 1055 fps. .kinda fun shooting a 45 at those speeds . .kinda shoots & feels like a 40s&w
@@gregbloom2789 I like the load alot its not a snappy powder like W231 can be. I didnt take it to the max charge either but I got to 1120fps with 7.7gr from a 1911 and with a Hipoint carbine the same load got 1250fps
I can see where this could be a good powder, but I don't personally have any use for it. Never had an issue with copper in my pistol barrels. Most of my pistol ammo is loaded at the low end for economy and general training and CFE is more of a mid range powder. I've used a lot of powders over the years, but I keep coming back to Green Dot. 5 to 6 gr works well in 9mm, 40, and 45. 7 to 8 gr makes a fantastic slightly reduced .223 varmint load out to 150 yds ;)
Was thinking about using CFE Pistol in working up 38+P loads for the Colt KC Target model revolver I just bought. I have some 124 grain Berry's flat nose plated bullets that my Taurus G3x just plain refuses to feed. I've got good neck tension with the .356 diameter bullets, and a firm crimp should keep them seated to specified OCL in the cylinder.
Please do. I have 5 lbs of it and so far the subsonic .308’s is all the load data that I have. I believe it can also be used in 45-70 which I have in a Henry 😃
@@harrycallahan692 It’s worked great for me! I agree though plus pistol is pretty limited with accuracy (compared to like bench rest PRS stuff)… Titegroup is on the dirty side though but I’m just making plinking ammo so my family and I can still enjoy the range… if I see some CFE Pistol around I’ll give it a try I use CFE 223 and love it so I’m a fan of their CFE line of powders
@@johnisgoodjohnisgreat5449 OK, Titegroup has been off the shelf at my local reloading supply for a couple of years now. I am having to look at other powder options. I may try the CFE 223 at some point as well.
I've found it to be a little dirty when not pushing it. I've had less than stellar results running CFEP in 44spl. Probably not the best powder choice but I've got a bunch of it and these days, sometimes all you can do is with what you already have.
Cfe pistol was one of my first powders I bought... I still use it. 223 was the same case. First powder for rifle(223 556 mostly) it's a solid powder. I haven't tested nor really cared about the temp stability as I load rather low in most cases. I like the fast clays powder also but the cfe is very flexible for literally everything I load for 🤗
I started using it to reload 124gr 9mm and found it shoots more consistantly than my CCI Blazer ammo that I typically use for practice ammo. I'm shooting it through an M&P 1.0 9mm and loading it on my trusty old Lee Loadmaster. I'm kinda new to CFE and was always a regular 231/38 user until I got a couple of jugs of CFE becase they were out of either the HP38 or 231 and figured I'd give it a try. Now, it's my go to powder for the regular pistol loads. With CFE, there's, pretty much a load for every pistol I own.
We use 5.5 gn of CFE pistol with 115gn plated X-Treme projectiles for our 9mm CZ Shadow II & TSO handguns. It leaves a lot of soot on the cases. Any idea why? We have a Dillon 550b with Dillon dies. The powder meters perfectly.
A decade ago when powder was really hard to find, I started loading 45 ACP with Hodgdon 800X powder. 800X is big and flaky, no possible double charge. CFE pistol is nearly identical in burn rate, but meters much better.
CFE Pistol is pretty handy for 45 Colt in the replica Black Powder Cartridge pistols and weaker lever actions like the 1860/66/73's. Can't speak to originals, as I don't have that kind of budget :) Good velocity with low pressure. You'll run into leading issues before you overpressure the guns if you stick with book loads and cast bullets, and Hodgden's starting load matches the black powder ballistics of the day with the sporting grade pistol powder they used, that is no longer made. No need at all to hot rod it! For the old style BPC guns, a middle of the pack load is the sweet spot for me. But the drawback is even their starting load is too hot for SASS at 930+ FPS out of a 7-8 inch barrel for a 250gr LRNFP, and a number of folks find it chronoing faster, depending on the gun, etc. YMMV. So for CAS you'll want to stick to faster powders like Trailboss, etc. that can be safely loaded to lower velocities, or real black. If shooting out of a conversion cylinder, I'd recommend some other powder, as the starting load velocity alone is past the high end of what that softer steel black powder barrel can handle; as well as the twist rate not being particularly suited to high velocity heavy bullets. Though I personally would recommend sticking to real black for those anyway, and with that large case stuffed with 2f. CFE-P is pretty handy in modern rounds, too, so one powder can do it all. Especially with powder becoming expensive and hard to find in my area, that's a big plus.
38 special, 5.0 gr 158g xtp, single stage, lyman turret and hornady progressive. handful to hamg on to but much fun. I also like it in 40 s&w - underrated cartridge today
I use the CFE to reload 9mm on my 650XL, I find 5.2 grains does great with 124 Acme Tek coated RN or Berry's 124 RN copper plated. I use that same load for the Berry's 124 Hybrid Hollow Point and it stays nicely zeroed, although I've never shot it into ballistic gelatin and am curious to know how they would do.
I surely like the 41 mag, but just as surely, I don't have one... Perhaps we'll pick one up one of these days. :) It's a pretty special revolver cartridge with some cool history.
I have a pound of CFE pistol but hadn't tried it yet. Trying to finish with the Winchester 540 that I still have. Will be using it for 9mm with jacketed and cast 115 gr on a lee turret press
@Daniel Busby, quick question. Is exterior of your cases dirty/sooty when you retrieve your brass when using CFE?? I'm still trying to fine-tune my 9mm loads using either 115 grain Berry's or xtreme. Plus trying to fine-tune the crimp (fourth station) on my Dillion Square Deal "B" press.
CFE Pistol is the only pwdr listed in the Hodgdon annuals 2021 pg 66 as usable across the board from tgt to light magnums. Maybe not the best in every cal, but probably good enough in these shortage times. Your gun mileage may vary.
Love y'all's channel and I've never seen anything more informative. Y'all's knowledge/research is on par with anything else out there! My question has to do with the possibility of a new video. There are ads for an ammunition manufacturer making cartridges with two-piece stainless steel cases and monolithic copper bullets. Available in 5.56 NATO, 300 BLK, 380 Auto and 9mm Luger. Can y'all verify if these are 'reloadable'? If so, what's it going to require? Thanks y'all. Shoot straight and as often as possible. Giddy up.
I'm a fan of 40 S&W personally. One who reloads, can make a .40 cartridge that is at least as good a a standard factory 10mm load, perhaps a bit better using a powder like longshot for instance - (with care of course). 👍
Has anyone ever tested what happens when you load less than 90% case capacity when using W-W296/H-110? How about a vid on this subject, to test the theory. Load some 44 mags at 100%, 90%, 80%, etc.

I would like to get into reloading, especially for my new 38 special. I thought I'd start with the Lee loader. Can you suggest where I can best find small pistol primers? I'd like to use FMJ bullets.
How about doing a segment on some rifle calibers using Trail Boss powder.
Working on it!
@@Ultimatereloader - yes we are! :)
Please do. I have 5 lbs of it and so far the subsonic .308’s is all the load data that I have. I believe it can also be used in 45-70 which I have in a Henry 😃
I load 9 mm, .40 S&W and 10 mm on a RCBS Rock Chucker press using the Lyman Brass Smith powder measure. Easy peasy and excellent performance.
I regularly use Titegroup for 9mm, 40 S&W, and 45 ACP, but if I see this around I’ll give it a try too, looks promising
Just because it says "Titegroup" doesn't mean it produces a tighter group. Yes...I've used it. Not that impressed.
I normally use Titegroup for 9mm and .40. But I just found some CFE Pistol going it try it in 9, .40, and .44 Special.
@@chriscosby2459 sick lmk how that goes
@@johnisgoodjohnisgreat5449 OK, Titegroup has been off the shelf at my local reloading supply for a couple of years now. I am having to look at other powder options. I may try the CFE 223 at some point as well.
I just discovered CFE Pistol. I saw it my my new Lyman (51st Ed) manual. Looking forward to trying it out.
It's a great powder and meters well. Cleaner than Unique. 9mm, 40S&W and 45ACP
I've tested it like at least five thousand times. No failure or problems, and I don't even clean my handguns but maybe once a year.
Works great in my glock 17, ive used it in my ruger gp100 in 357 magnum and dont really like all the air space you get
Cfe pistol is my go to. I also load h110. For hunting.
love the microscope portion of the video
I've found it to be a little dirty when not pushing it. I've had less than stellar results running CFEP in 44spl. Probably not the best powder choice but I've got a bunch of it and these days, sometimes all you can do is with what you already have.
Thank you for the great video.
Cfe pistol was one of my first powders I bought... I still use it. 223 was the same case. First powder for rifle(223 556 mostly) it's a solid powder. I haven't tested nor really cared about the temp stability as I load rather low in most cases. I like the fast clays powder also but the cfe is very flexible for literally everything I load for 🤗
I've had good results with this in 40s&w, 38 special wadcutter, and 357 magnum.
Great video and great information.. I’m looking to get some cfe
Will load some low pressure rounds for 357mag as soon as I can find some primers. Used in a Rossi for lever gun silhouettes.
Will give it a try next.
Glock 40 10mm with KKM 6 in. match barrell. 180gr Hornady XTP, CCI magnum large pistol primers.
7.4 gr = 1235 fps average.
A decade ago when powder was really hard to find, I started loading 45 ACP with Hodgdon 800X powder. 800X is big and flaky, no possible double charge. CFE pistol is nearly identical in burn rate, but meters much better.
I've loaded over 3,000 9mm rounds, using 5.4 grains of CFE Pistol with a 115 gr FMJ RN. Never had a squib load nor overcharge.
Your videos, Always very informative Was looking for CFE Pistol load recipes for 7.62x25.
No love for .41 mag, any thoughts on 210gr load? I have used it in 9mm for my glock and PCC all loaded on my 1980s era Dillon 550.
I surely like the 41 mag, but just as surely, I don't have one... Perhaps we'll pick one up one of these days. :) It's a pretty special revolver cartridge with some cool history.
I use it in 9mm, 10mm (great powder for 150-160gr bullets), 45 ACP and 38 special. I stick with H110 for 44mag.
I love CFE pistol. load 9mm 40cal 10mm 38 & 357 on a Hornady LnL. I shoot a lot and those 8lb cans disappear quickly..
I run CFE Pistol on 9 and 45 in my Dillon. Easy peasy.
I just saw some online today and thought about try it but I didn't get any this time.
I have a pound of CFE pistol but hadn't tried it yet. Trying to finish with the Winchester 540 that I still have. Will be using it for 9mm with jacketed and cast 115 gr on a lee turret press
i load 5.0gr of CFE with 124gr JHP at 1.08 on a Lee Loadmaster. works great in all my 9mm Pistols and CFE meters dead on every time with an auto drum.
9mm so far in a glock 19 and 48. Gavin can you do a video on .308 winchester subsonic loads
Use it for 9mm. 5.2 grains with a 115 grain xtream plated bullet.
@Daniel Busby, quick question.
@@MaxCruise73 In my experience it’s no worse than Winchester 231. Which was my go to powder before I discovered CFE pistol.
@@Panzerkampf I use Winchester 231 when reloading for .45 ACP.
Thank you for your response.
How much can it push on 10mm with solid copper 150gr tip?
CFE Pistol is the only pwdr listed in the Hodgdon annuals 2021 pg 66 as usable across the board from tgt to light magnums.
Maybe not the best in every cal, but probably good enough in these shortage times.
Your gun mileage may vary.
Rippin Point
Would you please cover Long Shot. It's much slower than most pistol powders and my experience is that it makes very accurate low power loads.
Giddy up.
Are you referring to the shell shock cases?
@@codyandrus4441 no sir, don't think so. I was hesitant to name the manufacturer. Y'all can check page 15 of the April issue of American Rifleman.
Interesting powder none available in Australia. I've success with IMR Hiskor800z 44 magnum fired from sw629 light load
I'm a fan of 40 S&W personally. One who reloads, can make a .40 cartridge that is at least as good a a standard factory 10mm load, perhaps a bit better using a powder like longshot for instance - (with care of course). 👍
9mm with a honrday single stage for my Beretta 92LTT. And I use it for 45 on a Dillion square B for my FNX 45 tactical
Great video. How does the CFE Pistol compare to Power zpistol?
Has anyone ever tested what happens when you load less than 90% case capacity when using W-W296/H-110? How about a vid on this subject, to test the theory. Load some 44 mags at 100%, 90%, 80%, etc.
Gavin. Great presentations, very detailed. I am an 81-year-old man, have been shooting for 6+ years as a hobby, mostly 9mm, 22 lr and 5.56. I would like to get into reloading, especially for my new 38 special. I thought I'd start with the Lee loader. Can you suggest where I can best find small pistol primers? I'd like to use FMJ bullets. Is this suggested? Is the Hodgdon's CFE powder "best" for a new loader? Thak you again for your fine detailed presentations!
My go to powder for both 40 & 9 only shooting jacketed bullets.
What press you use is immaterial.
I shoot cfeblk and h110.h110 is a fire breather in 300 blk
