When I was a kid there were 3 amazing things every year: 1) Watching Michael Jordan play, 2) watchining Mike Tyson fight, and 3) watching Barry Sanders run on Thanksgiving. Those were the days . . .
Barry to me was the greatest running back of all time! He did it with a solid online. If he had an all pro o-line and consistent quarterback; his records would be untouched
My youngest brother Juan resides at 206 S. Post Spokane,Washington ......Why don't you serve veterans American/European Union citizens who just happen to be black?.
I think Pat and John would have been happy to see the lions turn it around …they called many of their games over the years especially on Thanksgiving day
Me too. Sumerall and Madden were an excellent pair. The current generation of up and coming broadcasters doesn't have anyone like Sumerall. It seems like the era of memorable announcing pairs is over.
Nobody EVER ran the Football the way Barry did, and Nobody EVER described the manner in which #20 ran the Football Better than John Madden did. That's what really makes this Classic such a Joy to watch; those two unforgettable performances, one on the field and one in the booth 😄
He was fantastic in the mid 90s. Moore had three seasons in a row with 100+ catches and at least 1,300 yards and was an All Pro four seasons in a row. He deserved better than having to rely on Scott Mitchell or Charlie Batch to throw him passes. Imagine if Detroit had gotten a good quarterback like Warren Moon to go along with Moore and Barry Sanders, they would have had the best offense in the league.
Whats amazing is we havent even seen half the back barry was. No one even comes close. Im mean cmon he was 5'8! The greatest touch football player of all time.
@@joewanke6000 I wish!!!! I was only 2 at the time but my brother recorded every game from 86-93. Of course my mom threw them all away. When he moved out not knowing I watched them all the time
He had 2 amazing qualities; the Power of Superman and the Humility of Jesus. Hard to find in today's ridiculously over-paid, under- performing crybabies that now represent the NFL
Actually, I don't know why I said he Had them, He Still Has Them. He hasn't changed a bit. Thank God. I bet he could Suit Up right now, and still show these newbies a thing or two😄
I attended this game with my best friend. Some things can't wait so I made my move to the restroom to beat the halftime rush. Ended up missing one of the greatest touchdown runs by the GREATEST of all time. Didn't miss the urinal though. What a relief!
That sucks. At least you didn't miss all of his TDs. I went to the game in Tampa in 1997 and was lucky enough to witness another one of his best days. 24 carries 215 yards and 2 rushing TDs (80, 82) and 1 receiving TD. The only RB to ever have two 80+ yard Touchdowns in the same game. Which he would have done another time if a holding call hadn't brought a 2nd 80+ yarder back against GB. I'd have to research it, but it may have been in 97 also. Cheers 🍺 to watching the best running back in NFL history have 2 of his best days, in person. What an honor it is to be members of such an exclusive club.
1980-1994 NFL on CBS 1994-2002 NFL on Fox Pat Summerall John Madden They made the game of football 🏈 fun to watch Pat was so cool & calm John was so funny enthusiastic and passionate always talking up a storm 😆
My impressionable youth was spent at 3665 overhill Dr, Canton OH. Literally less than a miles walk to the Hall of Fame. I remember the moment I became a lifelong fan as I was awestruck by the inductees riding through the parade almost 40 years ago. I remember a few years later when I met the Cleveland Indians at a Cleveland Clinic function. I'll always root for my Cleveland teams but I gave up watching modern day sports competitions 7 years ago but could never ever give up on these classics.
Wow the crazy thing was it was his 11th straight 100 yard game of the season. Imagine 11 defenses knowing that you are the go to guy and they still can't stop you. Insane.
What a great game, but it was a sad that Juan Roque had a season ended injury on Barry's third TD. Madden was complimenting the rookie all game. What a shame.
Ripple effect. Ended up having to draft another tackle. Instead of picking John Janson who was a two year captain at Michigan and played on 97 national championship team, who also played 11 years in the NFL (10 with Washington 1 with the Lions) we draft Aron Gibson a guard out of Wisconsin to move to tackle. Wasted pick.
@@melite78 I agree, that guy Gibson was so undisciplined, he single handedly cost us a win against the Cincinnati Bengals back in 2001. He was promptly cut after that game before resurfacing with the Dallas Cowboys. What a way to drive home a mistake!
Scott Mitchell was suppose to be the guy who was gonna take over when Dan Marino retired but it didn't quite pan out and then Mitchell ended up here playing with the lions.
I remember this game, Bears got off to an impressively great start early on, and it looked to an be an upset but Barry Sanders went off for 3 TD's in this game and the Lions totally dominated the 2nd half.
I miss John Madden. This man loved football and made myself and millions of other people fall in love with the game as well. 0:54 I believe him wholeheartedly when he said that he always carried a picture of Red Grange around with him. What a legend.
To this day still makes me sad that the lions never got a ring with Barry sanders. They really did have a pretty good offense. They just couldn’t seem to string it all together. I would give anything to get these days back.
The 2nd biggest points in Lions history on November 27, 1997. The 1st was a 59 - 14 win over the Cleveland Browns in their last NFL Championship Game in December 1957.
In my lifetime - 57 seasons, 15 winning records, one playoff win. I want to find every potential free agent acquisition, draft pick and future head coach, grab them by the collar and tell them, "Listen, man. You're a great football player (or coach) now. But if you sign that contract, you'll just be a Lion. Don't do it." Also, Lions fun fact - no former Lions head coach has ever been a head coach with another team.
Boy when I'm glad I got to watch Barry play when he did. Haven't seen a running back as exciting as he was since. Such a classy guy too. Never taunted or show up his opponents. You knew it was a great Thanksgiving game with Barry playing, John Madden and Pat Summerall calling the game.
One of my earliest memories of Thanksgiving football is seeing the final score of this game. I dunno why I've always remembered it and the year it happened, but for some reason it made me think the Lions were always better than the Bears. Not exactly true!
best part (aside from Barry's playing) is Madden's commentary at 1:04:25 "I don't know what a jib is either. I just said you go it up and down. That's not even a sentence."
I remember that I was in Chicago for Thanksgiving when I walked into my relatives house seeing the end of this game. No they were not happy with that plus with the fact that the Packers led the NFC Central Division.
Was this the season when the Bears started with 7 straight losses but the close win vs. the Dolphins denied them a record 8th straight defeat? And the absolute kicker was the loss vs. the Packers when Erik Kramer tried an ill advised 2 point conversion instead of an easy extra point that could have tied the score and maybe send the game to overtime? That shitty decision should have cost coach Dave Wannstedt his job!
I wish the Lions would go back to these uniforms. Their current uniforms and their throwbacks look downright ugly. No wonder why the Lions have it this really bad in the NFL.
The Bears scored 73 in the 1940 NFL championship vs. the Redskins. The Lions could have scored 80 if they wanted to, given the ample time on the clock in this game's last quarter.
Ron roque was on his way to b a great right tackle...2nd round pick playing as a rookie ...had his knee destroyed...and that was that...i dont believe he played again...that hurt
He played in 4 games in 99. The Lions in the 90s lost several promising young OL. Utley paralyzed in a game. Andolsek killed by a truck working in his yard in the off season. Roque ruined his knee in his 1st NFL start, which was this game.
just think how many yards barry woul dhave had this season if he hadn't sat out the entire 4th quarter of this game. the way that defense was tired out. he would have ran for 400 yars probably
It's amazing to see these last 2 years of berries career I feel like Bobby Ross drove him to an early retirement when Barry retired I remember being really mad not at him but at the organization but look where we are now right on the doorstep of a Super Bowl it's time to kick that b**** down Go Lions
At 1:16:03, during halftime, James Brown, Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, and Ronnie Lott spoke with Mike Ditka about the mistakes and frustrations that he had since Week 13 against the Atlanta Falcons.
At 2:36:51, James Brown predicted that the Dallas Cowboys quarterback, Troy Aikman who had a back injury is questionable to play against the Tennessee Oilers, otherwise game time decision. Ronnie Lott thinks that the Dallas Cowboys could win the game without Troy Aikman as long as Wade Wilson and Emmitt Smith run the ball carefully, however, Howie Long thinks that it would be difficult for Wade Wilson to be successful.
Lions better draft a rb in the 2020 draft! John Taylor is my pick! It’s in their dna to have the most exciting offense in the nfl. Just like it’s in the bears dna to have a horrible qb!
Even now 25 years later I still hold my breath watching Barry run.
Barry Sanders will literally make you hold your breath every time he touches the ball. This guy was as special as it comes.

Herman Moore needs more respect as a best receiver all time. He was the first guy to go over 120 catches in a season.
He was fantastic in the mid 90s. Moore had three seasons in a row with 100+ catches and at least 1,300 yards and was an All Pro four seasons in a row. that 2nd touchdown for Barry is flat out insane. Noone has ever or will ever be a nasty as him. the greatest running back ever

Idc what the record books say, this Barry Sanders guy, is my ALL TIME Running Back
I put this on my list for the next Thanksgiving Day football game. I’d rather watch this game every Thanksgiving, then the turds of today. 👍🏼
Yep. Thats what I'm doing right now
Funny how I looked this up on RUclips after just turning the current one off with a recent comment
I think before Erik Kramer was the QB for the Bears this game he was the QB for the Lions during their last playoff win in 1991 over the Cowboys.
Yeah Baby you're right
Berry Sanders jukes so fast he cuts the fabric of space and time. Simply amazing!

Put it this way, if Barry wasn't in this game Detroit would of loss & you wouldn't think the offense was pretty good.
A competent quarterback with some positive consistency in his passing ability would have got them there!
Exactly a running back can only do soo much it is up to the quarterback to be the playmaker for the offense

A good example of what its like to be a Lions fan is how this year vs Green Bay, the Packers officially led for 0:00 in both games.. and won both.
Somehow, this same Bears team beat an 8-3 Tampa team just 4 days earlier.
if only football was football like this again I might go back to watching it
Barry really had more yardage on the season than his QB. Don't see that anymore
