Fun fact: the guy who tackled Barry at 2k yards (#31 for the jets) and the guy who chased him down at the end, is now the Lions defensive Coordinator! - Aaron Glenn
Edit: i was wrong and this is still getting interacted with. He was tackled by Glenncon his final 53 yard run

One of the best games I've ever seen. Essentially a playoff game. The Jets linebackers played their lanes to perfection in the first half. In the 2nd half they were a quarter step slower and Barry ran wild. This was special because Barry was up against a good, disciplined defense that was giving 110% effort. He still beat them.

Reggie Brown’s injury in the fourth quarter 1:27:20 is heavily edited. Over 15 minutes passed before they resumed play. I believe he stopped breathing at one point. The entire Lions team knelt in prayer on the middle of the field; the Jets did the same on their sideline. It was, by far, the scariest moment I’ve ever seen in a football game. Thank God he lived, and was able to resume a normal life. He was a terrific football player.

The moves he pulled, his acceleration, his instincts, and how hard he was to tackle. He always makes me laugh because he makes the defenders looks so inept... And many of them were Pro Bowl quality. 1997 was an amazing year for Barry Sanders. It was an amazing year for me as a fan as well. There are many reasons Barry achieved that milestone, most of which are Barry's talent and determination. Now many have given credit to the Offensive Line which is very much deserved, but there is a group of players that I think were forgotten...the defense. I just watched the game again and realized some things possibly went unnoticed because it was overshadowed by Barry's accomplishment as well as the devastating injury to Reggie Brown. Sanders needed 2 yards and the Lions punted with a little over 3 minutes left in the game. The Jets needed a win and with the playoffs on the line that could have easily been the last time Barry touched the ball. But the defense did some very impressive things to get the ball back into Sanders hands. If not for them, the quest for 2000 yards may never have happened. Of course it took Barry Sanders and the Lions team an entire season to cross the 2000 yard barrier, i just had to give the defense some much deserved love.

We couldn't believe it but it was happening and we didn't listen.we became the loudest game in nfl history ,almost 90 thousand in a dome screaming for 2000 yards and the playoffs.it was a numbing and vibrating sound ,you could feel it on you body.after the game the jets and lions said the floor was shaking. From 1991-97 the Silverdome was one of the toughest venues in the NFL. The Lions lost that atmosphere when they moved to quiet, tepid Ford Field (plus the team has normally sucked) but there was a time that Detroit was one of the toughest road trips in the league, as you can see here.

atrain 34007 you clearly were biased and needed to try and get your personal feelings out as a matter of fact so you can feel better. Without Barry Sanders this team wins no more that 3 games. Without Moore and with or without that offensive line Barry Sanders is a at any time credible scoring threat and can win any game ok any given time. You can’t compare them. The receivers and the Oline all look good BECAUSE the defense is wary of Sanders

@@phomjachana Lomas Brown and Kevin Glover were there his entire career...the only good lineman added late in his career was Hartings.
Herman Moore was also a 3 time 1st team all-pro, 4 time pro bowler and had 7 seasons of at least 900 yards...it wasn't just a 3 year prime. Plus he was just one guy, they also had Johnnie Morton and Brett Perriman among others who were good at various times too.

Even though Emmitt is the all time leading rusher, Barry Sanders did something with what was probably a porous offensive line. The only time you hoped to slow Sanders down on defense was being disciplined like the Jets were in the first half. Most teams tried so hard to stop Sanders. You don't stop elusive backs like that, you can only hope to control them.

Yea the crowd thing was strange. I've seen a ton of football games and have never seen them yell at the crowd like that. That is the entire point of HOME FIELD. People pay big money to cheer so that was total BS by that old fart ref. Every Seattle Seahawk game is that loud and its normal, I don't see them penalizing the Seahawks each home game. Totally strange for the refs to do that.

Outside of Barry being the best ever and remembering watching him hit 2000, I'll never forget the "crowd is so loud that the refs call penalties" around 1:25:00
Yes, the refs made the Lions home crowd stay quiet while the opposing team had the ball.
I don't care about what draconian rule may exist, that's a rarely brought-up example of how The NFL has a long history of treating The Lions differently. I can't believe a Raider or Packer or Steeler crowd would ever be told to not make noise by the league/refs.

I took my three sons to their first NFL game on this date. We were hoping for a game that would see Barry pass the 2,000 yard mark, but honestly, at halftime it didn't look like it would happen. During the second half, the Silverdome was the lowest of lows with the injury to Reggie Brown, then become the loudest experience of our lives when Barry was marching toward 2,000. A game and experience we shared that we will never forget.

This particular game had the highest of highs and the lowest of lows! The Lions won and made the playoffs by doing so, and Barry got his 2000 yards but Reggie Brown broke his neck in this game and never walked again, heartbreaking.
