    Just got a new carbon steel wok today and the rivets on the handle worked their way fairly loose just seasoning the pan. Tried this and it worked perfectly. I know I could just send the wok back for a replacement but I'm sure there's a good chance the next one would do the same thing and I just spent 2 hours seasoning this thing!

    • @DirtFarmerJay
      @DirtFarmerJay  8 лет назад +1

      yes, indeed, this can be done repeatedly. If it happens often, the pan is being cooled down way too fast with cool or cold water. Let it reduce in temperature slowly to reduce expansion and contraction cycling in the metal. Hope this helps! Best, DFJ

    How can I take off the handle? I wanna replace it. Do I keep the pan secure and use the hammer to strike the handle so it comes off slowly? Or is there an easier way. Thanks!

    • @DirtFarmerJay
      @DirtFarmerJay  8 лет назад +4

      +Anon Great - probably the best way to remove the handle is to drill out the rivets. That means you would have to secure the pan in vise with some soft material between the pan and vise jaws. You would then create a dimple in the head of the rivet (there is a spring loaded punch that I use for this, or your could use a dimple punch you strike with a hammer). Then, use a drill, along with some machine oil, to drill out the center of the rivet. I'd use about a 1/8" bit for the first pass. Then enlarge the next pass until the flared parts of the rivets fall off. Be very careful not to allow the tip of the bit to "skate" around, or you will damage the pan by gouging it and creating a rough spot that food will stick to. You might protect the pan with painters tape or clear contact paper. What are you doing to replace the handle with? Let me know how this turns out! Best, DFJ

    I liked the video, but, what if you have done this and you just need new rivets?

    • @DirtFarmerJay
      @DirtFarmerJay  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks. If the rivets get to the place they are thinned out and their structural integrity is compromised, then you could drill them out and replace them. Rivets can be found at larger industrial and fastener suppliers.

    How do you remove the handle if needed? opposite of what you did.

    • @DirtFarmerJay
      @DirtFarmerJay  Год назад

      story1234, it's a bit tricky, but the short answer is to drill out the rivets so that the head of the rivets fall off and release the handle. Then you start over again. I'm curious, why do want to remove the handle? Best Regards, DFJ

    going the other way, how do you remove the handle?

    • @DirtFarmerJay
      @DirtFarmerJay  3 года назад

      Brian, you will need to create a dimple in the top of each handle rivet, and then drill out the rivet with a sharp 1/4" or so drill bit. Pry off the rivets and you've got the handle off. Does that help? Best, DFJ

  • @pierredonvez1887

    I have an expensive copper saucepan with a stainless steel interior, the handle rivets are starting to loosen, however the river heads don’t come through to the inside of the pan, they are probably sandwiched between the copper and the stainless steel layer. Can I still use this technique hitting the rivers from the outside and somehow protect the stainless inside?

    • @DirtFarmerJay
      @DirtFarmerJay  6 лет назад

      Pierre, honestly, I'm not sure. However, if the pan becomes irritating to use, it's probably worth the risk to use a modified version of my method. I suspect you are correct; the head of rivets are in between the layers, or the manufacturer used a welded stud and then affixed the handle to it. You can try putting a hardwood block inside the pan, and putting it against a hard massive surface that will act as an anvil. You would them peen the heads of the stud/rivets to get the handle to tighten down. Let me know how it turns out! Best, DFJ
