- Ever had your Hook and Loop fasteners stop working? Are they all full of lint and won’t stick anymore? Don’t throw them away. Dirt Farmer Jay will show you how to make them like new in just seconds!
Dear Dirt Farmer Jay - I LOVED your video! Not only was it extremely beneficial for me to problem solve my velcro issue - but you have such a delightful character and it was a pleasure listening to you teach how to resolve this issue with such sincere enthusiasm! I gave you a "thumbs up" without hesitation and I rarely do that with video's. You are so great! Thank you D.F.J. :)
Aw garsh... glad to be of help. We enjoy passing on tips and techniques we've learned or developed. Glad you could make use of the info. Best, DFJ
1) Excellent method.
2) I went searching because my dogs winter coat is what need renewed and you just happened to showed a dog's coat!
3) Love your theme music.
+Charles Laughton - glad to be of help. Thanks for the kind comments and your obviously fine taste in music. Thanks for watching and be sure to pass us on! Best, DFJ
a 18 yr old girl 5 minutes ago at Rite Aid had not a clue what Velco was.
I mean it. That is how i came across your video
Thank you! I just put a new piece of Velcro on my dogs rain coat because it didn’t stick anymore . Will buy that for the future! Never heard of that tool before !👍👍👍👍👍
Sounds great!
So I was looking to find a repair for my velcro and I stumble into your video. Thanx JAY, you always seems to help with my problem. :))) We all miss you!
Well I do think you have saved my favorite hat. It's been on the shelf for a year now and I just couldn't throw it away. I will now be able to wear it with pride again. Mr dirt farmer your a complete genius. DIRT FARMER JAY FOR PRESIDENT.
Ok…. After watching a handful of how to videos on cleaning your Velcro, I wish your video came up first!!!! Why?? Hands down, your method works a 1,000 times better!!! Yep!!! I would of saved a lot of time and money if I saw your video first!! Thanks for the heads up of a great “how to” video!!!😊😊😊
Glad it was helpful!
You can also use a cat slicker hair brush. The teeth are a little more spaced out and not quite as rigid, but works just as well for this purpose.
oedipa maas - great solution! Thanks for sharing. Best, DFJ
Excellent tip Jay. Thanks a million. I love velcro & a little OCD kicks in when my velcro gets "loaded up" because I'll sit there for an hour or two trying to pick the "Dod Gamn"(sic) lint or hair out of my velcro. Though it kept my fingers busy, I can think of plenty of other things to keep my fingers busy instead of picking my velcro clean
+Ted Hackett - glad to be of help. What a great sense of humor! I bet those that are closest to you think of you as a "hoot." Thanks for writing! DFJ
They do. That's why they stopped calling me Ted and just call me "The Owl". Nyuk, Nyuk. See 'ya 'round.
To T. Hackett: Two hours? You could have picked some scales on the banjo.
@Farmer Jay, you need to put a link to this product on Amazon, so you can earn a little money. I watched about 6 videos on cleaning Velcro, and yours is the only one that was efficient. Thank you!
Great Tip, Thanks so much. Ours invariably have to wear comfy cones at least once a year.
They are held together with velcro and they get loaded up with fur.
everything you need to know is between 1:48 and 2:45 .
good fix .
Thank you!!
Thanks seems like a long video for. Just showing how this works lol
It could have been a 15 second video LOL.
Thank you! I threw away good shoes thinking the Velcro fasteners were useless after all the lint filled in the hooks. I'll never do that again - lol.
The best & most effective method I have seen. Thank you.
that really seems to work very well....far better than what i found on other videos. thanks!
Great tip. I have a pair of Velcro sneakers that I was about to trash then decided to google cleaning Velcro. Awesome.
Perfect video. Short and sweet with great info.
Thanks!
Not only learned how to clean velcro but learned what a file card is. I need one of those. Thanks
Thanks for watching. Its a simple topic but LOTS of people have used this technique to renew "all things velcro".
Great tip, Jay! Looking forward to your next video on cleaning the file card!
A repair guy in chicago wanted $40. to sew on some new straps on for a pair of shoes. Thanks for your DIY
Mike, glad to help you spare some expense! Best, DFJ
Thank you!! This will help with my leg braces. Now to see if my Local hardware has one.
WOW, I DID WHAT U SAID AND IT FIXED MY VELCRO GUN HOLSTER, THANX
Will be using this on my childrens shoes, thank you for the tip.
Glad this is helpful to you. This will extend the life of your kid's shoes, and perhaps free up a bit of cash. Thanks for watching the video and writing. Best, DFJ
Thanks, I never thought of this way. Very useful
Glad to be of help! Thanks for watching our video. Best, DFJ
Wow! That was amazing! Thank you for sharing!
OMG I wish I would have found this before I spent about 2 hour picking the fuzzier out of the stupid mop velcro at work. I guess next time I can just do that. Lol thank you super helpful
Glad to assist! This will save you time and cost next time! Best, DFJ
wow, I thought I was being clever by using needle-nose style tweezers, but that is an awesome tool and I LOVE tools, never even heard of a "file card" before...In my Amazon cart now, not sure if it will be useful to me much (kind of a uni-tasker unless you do a lot of actual wood filing!!) but I'm going to drop the $10 on a file card just to see how much faster it works than the tweezer method, or if it cleans better for than matter (which it appears to do, fast AND fun) Thanks Mr. DirtFarmerJay, thumbs up and subscribed!
Cleaning tool for wood files.....GREAT IDEA FOR CLEANING VELCRO!!!! THANK YOU!!!
That's an awesome hack, I tried it when my AFO's calf velcro strap stopped catching. It turns out that part of mine was ok it was the other side that was not sticking anymore. Its made of a similar material like what's use for an arm sling immobilizer used for surgery recovery.
I looked up my brace and then how much a replacement would be and oh my goodness it was $73 just for that strap for the AFO braces, the brace itself is over $400 so I guess that why, well I certainly was not paying that price lol so I had to figure something out I had to wear my brace so I wouldn't fall on my butt so I thought let me try twisting the strap so the other side would face the velcro and it worked, only I didn't like the twisted feeling against my calf so I cut the strap and sewed the used up edge to the part that I cut. It was made of all the same material front and back just the very end that stuck to the Velcro had worn out so it work perfectly. But thank you you gave me the idea to look at that strap and figure out a cheaper (Free) option. Since it was covered by insurance I'm going ask if I can get the replacement maybe they'll give it to me
What a great idea, this is good for horse rugs, horse boots🐴
This is awesome I lost a good pair of boxing gloves cause the velcro went :( now i know how to keep them fresh
Oh thank you, y husband has Parkinson's and he uses a lot of Velcro. YAHOOOOOO!! We also have 6 dogs and fur is a condiment at our house. Thank you.
Outstanding tip sir!! Thanks for sharing
Old Guys RULE !!!!!!
This is far more entertaining than Opie & Jim.
Thanks so much DirtFarmerJay!! Worked like a charm on my leg brace. How do I clean the file cleaner now? THUMBS UP!
This didn't fix my baseball glove, although it did clean out the hook side of the glove, which work fine when I attach a new loop piece against it. My glove actually has a problem with the old loop piece; it is so pulled apart that nothing loops into the hooks. I then had the idea of shaving down the stretch-out fibers with a beard trimmer, but that had no effect on the lack of effectiveness of getting hooked. It was worth a try before replacing the Velcro.
I cheated and read some reviews ahead of mine.oops
"Dear Dirt Farmer Jay" was my favorite well written.
Jay, felt as a farmer, to take the time out his very busy day to make this video.
I thought farmer "J" "s video was about getting things to stick back together again !
Which is what farmers do.... I wish I was on a farm ?
cleaver and simple !!
thanks a lot
The file card also works great for removing embedded micro shavings and debris in Norton stones that we use to stone our machining tables.
Anyways, thanks for the tip!
this video is beautiful
wowsers! excellent tip!
Julie, thanks for watching our videos and your kind comments. We appreciate it!
THIS REALLY WORKS. I TRIED IT....
+Desi Gulley - thanks! Glad it was helpful to you. And, thanks for watching our videos!
just did this and it worked great! any tips on how I can clean the wood file after some use?
I love your videos, this was sooooooooooooooo helpful thank you sooooooooooooooo much
Aw garsh - glad you were able to solve this little problem. Hook and loop fasteners are so commonplace, it pays to be able to keep them in use a bit longer. Thanks for writing! DFJ
WORKS!!!
And all these years I've just been pickin it out with my fingers
Ah yes, the forbidden toothbrush...
I used my cat brush. It was awesome
Thanks chief 👌🏾
Thank you so much for this!
You just saved my beautiful $500 northface goretex 3 piece rain resistant jacket! Thank you dirtfarmer jay! The wrist straps were not sticking too well.. hey how can i get metal buttons to stay attached? I button the hoodie onto my jacket but two of the buttons are not staying together.. any clue as to how I should come about this fix?
Jay Cash - Great to hear! A great jacket like that is something that is to be enjoyed for several years, and we're glad that we help make that possible in some small way. As for the buttons, give me a bit more info. Are you saying these buttons clear sliding out of the button holes? Or something else? Best Regards, DFJ
brilliant
gonna give this a try thanks!
Let me know how it works out for you. Best, DFJ
DirtFarmerJay it actually did not work for me because I found out that the hook side was fine to begin with. The loop side is what’s broken in my case. I determined that by using brand new Velcro to test each side. I did learn another technique to make loop side work a bit better by using a lighter! It sticks a bit better now.
Thanks Jay!
good stuff jay!
worked !!
Finally. A way to fix my $25 batting gloves.
Thank you.
great tip!
Outstanding!!!
Thank you mister Farmer. :)
+joseph proto Our pleasure. Hope the velcro around your place has found another life! We invite you to subscribe if you haven't yet. Thanks for watching! Best, DFJ
Awesome technique that I’ve never heard of before..
But what about when the othe side starts to lose it??
Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much I appreciate the video
You are amazing! Thanx!!!
Thanks a Million!
+narfason txoko - our pleasure.
I don't have problems with the hooks clogging, but with the loops wearing out. No cure for that I guess.
same here :(
Thanks for a quick and informative video. I have a question. Was it the velcro that was not sticking or the patch? I want to stick velcro to ABS plastic pipe. Which glue is best for the velcro?
The receiver (loop) part of my Velcro is not allowing the hooks to cling on. Any thoughts on how to revive it?
great tip, thanks
I wish you would have said, "clean with a file brush" and saved everyone some time.
davesays oh man a whole 3 minutes has been lost.
He saved you time...he told you how to clean velcro. If it weren't for his video, you'd still be trying to pick it out by hand and wasting time. 🙄
he's not here for you buddy
Thanks I have hand braces, for carpel tunnel. It’s going to help them last a little longer.
Bart, hope this renewal process gives you extended life on the braces and gives you the support you need to keep on keeping on. Thanks for writing! Best, DFJ
Great! Now... how do you clean the file card?
Hi Don. You can clean it out with a small brush like an old toothbrush. The file card is sharp so I wouldn't recommend using just fingers. Thanks for watching and commenting. Best to you, DFJ.
I tried this with a clean (non-greasy) BBQ grill brush and it worked fantastically. Thanks!
I'm guessing just about any wire brush may work?
+Eric Forhan - great idea. Actually, any finer, but stiff enough, wire bristle brush will work. As you mention, being sure it's clean is a must. Another type of brush that will work is the small wire brushes that plumbers use when soldering a copper or brass fitting. As long as the bristles are fine enough to get down between the rows of hooks, you are in business. Thanks for sharing and for watching our video. Pass us on! Best, DFJ
My problem is that 100% of anywhere you look to why velcro doesn't stick, it just says "clean it" and I have velcro that is perfectly clean, but I've still cleaned it several times to be completely sure. I've washed it, brushed it and so on and it doesn't stick at all.
baconfromhell666 (what a screen name!) - it's likely that the fuzzy/loop side has been abraded and there isn't enough loops left to grab. If that is the case, it needs to be replaced. Also, if either side is significantly abraded/worn off, it's a goner. Lastly, if either side has been melted due to heat exposure (too close to campfire, it was ironed, etc.), there is no cure to either replace the side that is needed, or if that is not an option, to replace the article the Velcro is part of. I hope that helps. Best Regards, DFJ
Another life hack. If u don’t feel like cleaning the metal brush from the fiber just get a lighter and burn it off 😄
T-series - That's a GREAT idea! Thanks for passing it on. Best, DFJ
Thank you kind sir...
GREAT.... THANKS...
+Ichigo Bleach - glad to be of help. Be sure to subscribe and pass us on! Best, DFJ
my problem was on the fuzzy side.
I don't have all that in my wrist straps but they still come undone when i need them the most. I paid like 55 bucks for them. Are mine just worn out, or is there anything i can do to get them to stay together better?
Would it ruin it by straight ing out the loops BTW what's Velcro tried to look it up but my cave home doesn't get good reception
Velcro is a name brand for these types of fasteners. It's like people call facial tissue "Klennex" even though they are NOT the Klennex brand. Thanks for watching! DFJ
A rubber pocket comb works better and doesn't damage the hooks.
Are these only at hardware stores, or any suggestion on places I can buy one? Im wearing a medical boot thingy and I've been wearing it for months. I have a lot of long dark hair that I shed and between my hair and regular lint etc, my boots velcro is losing its "stick" and as I go to take a step the top strap always loosens and I look like an idiot when it happens because I think others think im falling lol.
Ellen, Maggie pointed out to me that a pet grooming brush with metal bristles comes close. Give that a try! Let me know how it turns out of you. Best, DFJ
@@DirtFarmerJay thanks for the reply! I happen to have one of those, so that's perfect. Ill give it a try. Thanks again!
I use my cats steel wire grooming brush.
eager to try this with my dog's coat - it won't stay shut but sticky side is full of dog hair.
Ruth, thanks for writing. How did it turn out with your dog's jacket? Best, DFJ
It worked great. She’s furry so will keep up with the cleaning! Thanks.
This velcrow problem might work but in the end the other side of the velcrow stops sticking
Ambrose, indeed, keeping the hook side just lengthens the amount of time you'll be able to keep the fastener system working. The "loopy" side, can wear as well, especially in abrasive situations. When that happens, both sides need to be replaced or the article discarded. Best, DFJ
Hi. I am looking for a way to protect the velcro hooks from getting gunk in them. I bought new boots online and love them except that the strap is about 1/2 inch too short. That means about 1/2 inch of vecro hook on the bottom of the strap is left exposed. Can you buy patches? I'm thinking I could cut a little piece and attach it to the exposed hooks to keep them clean. The boots ae black suede. Thanks.
D.R., I've seen hook and loop fastener "kits" in the crafts section of stores like Walmart and Target. There's no reason why you couldn't cut a small piece of the loop side and affix it to the exposed hook surface to help protect it. Go for it! Thanks for writing. Best, DFJ
Great tip. I am thankful. I just don't understand why instructional videos always have long-winded lead-ins. Like being forced to watch a Liberty Mutual commercial first before 'revealing' the promised solution. You, yourself, stated that only a caveman wouldn't know what velcro is. Couldn't you apply the very same truth and assume that people who have an interest in the title 'Renewing Velcro' probably don't expect to be given to the caveman's introduction to velcro for 2 minutes of a 4-minute video? Just a consideration - not an argument. Maybe the modern-man's solution first and then the lesson for cavemen perhaps? Thanks again for your practical, useful suggestions
and the soft side?
Thanks now how do you clean the brush. Just kidding. 😂
What about the other part of the Velcro??
Agroskater - is the "fuzzy" or "loopy" side is abraded/worn away, there is nothing for the hook size to grip to. You either need to get a new article, or see about getting the fuzzy side replaced. Does this help? Thanks for writing. Best, DFJ
Dear Dirt Jay: Can one use workshop metal sharpening filers?
eddyvideostar - give me a bit more detail. Use to remove fiber in the hook portion? Not sure what metal sharpening filers are. Give me more detail, and we can go from there! Best Regards, DFJ

Hi I have a new coat and it has straps on the arm and its going unsticky but It doesn't look dirty
The nonhook side is probably stretched out. I have the same issue with my son's nap map for preK. This solution doesn't apply to me (or you), but it's still handy info.
Though this method may prolong the use of velcro, I've found there's more to the issue than lint in the hooks.
After brushing two velcro strips I noted marginal improvement. For good measure I also tidied the loop areas. Nope. I then compared the piece w. another unused velcro piece frm the same bag. The difference in clinging power between them was profound. Without the benefit of a magnified view of why, I believe velcro hooks have a limited life b/f they go unsprung. When they do it's *finito*.
Viviano, thanks for taking time to weigh in. I've found that there are various qualities of this type of product and the premium ones tend to last longer and the hooks stay in place longer. You are right, one the hooks loose their shape, it's finito. Another real enemy of this product is abrasion. If the hooks are "sanded" off or the "loop" side is "scrubbed" off, it's over as well. Thanks for the insights! Best Regards, DFJ
Yes I was just coming here to say pretty much the same thing. I've found that the brush works I'm a sense yo clean up the velcro. Though I've found the brush also does a disservice to the hooks possibly breaking them and the velcro actually works a little less after the cleaning. I don't know just my experience I thought I'd share.
How do you make the loop side adhere to the hook side better? Does that mean that the hoop side is too worn? Do I have to replace it or can I fix the loop side?
Chrisvelasco, whenever I've renewed velcro, it's been because the "hook side" is loaded up. I haven't had a problem with the loop side. If the hook side is clean, and you can't get it to grab the loop side, then I think your suspicions are correct - the loop side is too worm to be revitalized. Thanks for watching! DFJ
Ok so how do you get Velcro to restick when it's the fuzzy side that doesn't work anymore I wear two knee braces and I can't afford new ones nor can I see new Velcro due to arthritis and almost blind
Jody, if the fuzzy side is no longer working, it's probably because it is either worn down or heat damaged. I don't know of a way to restore the fuzzy side without replacing it. Sorry to not be able to give you better new, and sorry to hear of your struggles. Best, DFJ
Does the crud accumulate only on the "hook" side of the Velcro?
David, pretty much, and it has to do with the physical structure of the material. The hook side is just that; micro hooks, so they capture material quite readily. The fluffy side is actually thousands of loops that get snagged in the hook side, but will release with moderate pulling apart tension. If the hook side is no longer snagging the side that has the hooks after it's been clean, it's likely it's been abraded or simply has worn out over time and needs replacement if possible. Hope this helps! Best, DFJ
I have velcro on my work uniform so my name badge can attach to it, but I got too close to it with the iron and now the hook side of the velcro on the back of my badge won't stick to the fluffy side that is on my shirt. Any ideas how I can roughen it up ?
+Leanne Bromley - sorry so long to respond - I just found this in my hold area, so didn't see it until now. Unfortunately, once you melt the little micro-hooks, there isn't much left to hook onto all the "loop" side. You'll need to get the "hook" side replaced. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news! Thanks for watching! best, DFJ
Have a Bounce House Business and my wet/ dry slide protector thanks you!
where does one find a file card? As I -attach my Delco strap to my sandal!
You can find file cards at well-stock home improvement centers in their tool section. Or, you can get one online. I hope that helps! Best, DFJ
