I love music like this, a kind of folk-rock type of thing. One of my professors as an undergrad actually knows him, having written a book about him and his music, and having the opportunity to jam with him he often talked about as a real life and career highly for him.
“Wish I didn’t know now what I didn’t know then” is one of my favorite lines of all time. It means more and more the older you get. When I first found your channel, Bob Seger was my immediate recommendation for you. Please do more. He's one of the best storytellers of all time.
Going down the "Bob Seger" rabbit hole is a complete experience due to the fact that his sound is so iconic and is absolutely PURE "American" in regard to lyrics, and combination of musical styles.
@@Tony-mh3dm I think you’ve got the gist of it! I’m sure it can be interpreted many ways but… I think he’s talking about a relationship that at the time was so filled with newness, wonder & exuberance that probably felt like it’d last forever but then the reality of life & time wear on it until those things are lost and it comes to an end. Summary: It’s about the pain of hindsight. I could be wrong but that’s what it always made me feel.
@@Tony-mh3dm It's basically the opposite of the saying "I wish I knew then what I know now", but instead of wishing he had his current knowledge back then, he's instead wishing that he was still as naive as he used to be. Given the context of the song (given that this line comes after the girl said that they'd be together forever, and later he says that he's now alone), it's probably meant to refer to how back then he didn't realize how fleeting love was, and wishes that he'd never found that out.
I remember when this song was released. I loved it the very first time I heard it and it was my favorite song from 1980 until 2007. I still love the song today. Bob Seger is so superbly backed in this song by the Eagles who sang the background vocals.
The genre is Bob Seegar. He's in a class by himself. I recommend his song "Like A Rock" or "Night Moves"....all his songs are great. Another group you might like is The Marshall Tucker Band and their song Can't You See. BTW, I'm 77 years old and in the USA.
it is a self growth song, but the wind are the forces that go against you, its kind of that rebel american spirit that made bob seger such an icon in the american biker community.
Bob Seger comes across as a very nice guy. Someone you would like to have a conversation with and share eggs and bacon with at breakfast. His songs have meaning and soul. 😊😊❤❤
When this song came out I was the young man in the 1st verse . A few years down the line I moved from one side of the U.S. to the other , similar to the 2nd verse & now all these years later I am that 3rd verse . I love the line , one of my all time favorite lyrics , "Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then." as someone older now looking back with envy on the unaware blissfulness of youth .
I love this song, and at my age I identify with it a lot. At some point of my life I felt young, strong, didn't care of trends or currents, I tried to go my own way. Later in life with family, kids, taxes, I felt like I just could not handle the pressure on my own and had to look for help and shelter. But then, at some point, one starts realizing either by raising the family to be critical thinkers, or by investing time in the politics of our place, or by influencing those around us, at certain age without the strength of our youth, but with the experience of our years, we keep moving against the wind.

You mentioned windmills. In English we have "tilting at windmills," which means attacking imaginary enemies. Tilting suggests two knights jousting, tilting at one another. It comes from Don Quixote a Cervantes character, so we got it from the Spanish.
@@kdavies3105 okay, I just checked. you're right. just Glen Frey on Against the Wind. Henley and Schmidt showed up with him on the song Fire Lake. Sorry, my bad.
A few things. Luv me some Bob Seger. Being in the rat race business world for 9 years, the line I've been running to live hit home. I did well in that world so I decided at age 29 to stop running and just live. So I left, purchased a house with property and opened a animal rescue facility for the last 3 years. I now am living a dream. You mentioned you like horses. At my home I currently have 3 regular size horses, 5 mini horses, a mini donkey, a mini goat, 5 dogs and many other critters. One of the most things in life is to feel needed. When I wake up every day I know there are many animals that need me. That's a great feeling. I noticed that you say thank you to your fans. I would like to say Thank You for being you. Be Happy Bis. Luv Ya. Mark
I think metaphorically when you” run against the wind “ it is the progression of change from irresponsible youth to middle age and then old age in which life is presented as the challenge of running against the wind through one’s life.We learn about sex and love, the loyalty of friends only to find comfort in the wisdom of learning the ins and outs of making a living. You can’t do it all or keep it all…you just keep moving.I truly love this song for its poetry.

So glad you're doing Bob Seger! He's a HomeTown boy that I was lucky enough to see several times in concert. He's got an absolutely massive catalog of great songs. It's definitely a song that hits you differently throughout life. How it makes me fell now is very different than 30 years ago. Bob has always been a great wordsmith.
I’ve been a huge fan since the Bob Seger System long before the Silver Bullet Band. Those three consecutive albums in the ‘70’s, Night Moves, Live Bullet and Stranger In Town are wonderful.
@@KyleS.1987 Old Time Rock & Roll is my least favorite song I've ever heard of his. I had a gym teacher in 6th grade who would have us do aerobics to warm up to that song every single day. I got so sick of it.
Bob Seger has a way with some of his songs of evoking a deep feeling of memory, nostalgia. Main Street is a short song, but one of his best, and most nostalgic and emotional.
Bob Seger, what a singer, I confess that I did not know him and I loved him, beautiful music and interesting lyrics, I interpret it as never giving up and enjoying life at every stage. By the way, I would like to suggest a reaction to Joe Cocker with the song: You are so beautiful. Greetings and a big hug from Mexico City.
You found my favorite artist! You MUST continue down the Bob Seger rabbit hole. He has sooo many big hits! Next up, “Like a Rock” officially music video. And his “Night Moves” is my favorite
I'm so happy that you finally got to some Bob Seger! You've actually heard some of this song before in "Forrest Gump". No, it's not Country, but I can see how it might have that vibe. It's actually kind of funny to see how you think certain more mellow classic rock feels country to you. Bob Seger was big in the 70s and 80s mostly, and was definitely rock n roll, and sometimes even had a vibe that leaned into an older 50s/early 60s style rock n roll. There are so many great songs of his. If you just look up Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band Greatest Hits, every song on there is a banger! My favorite, that I've suggested before, is "Turn The Page", and Metallica has even done a cover of that song. "Like A Rock" is a good one that was also used in a long running advertising campaign for Chevy Trucks in the 90s and early 2000s, so a lot of people think about that when they hear it. "Roll Me Away", "Main Street", "Hollywood Nights", "Night Moves", are all good ones for starters! "Old Time Rock & Roll" is a classic that's been used in lots of movies, probably most famously in the famous scene of a young Tom Cruise dancing around in his underwear in "Risky Business".
Well said. Country has changed a lot in the past 20-30 years, as I guess most music does. This wouldn't have been considered country at the time it came out.
As far as "next"... STRONGLY suggest the LIVE version of "Turn the Page" as it really is one that highlights Bob's vocals on stage as well as in the studio. He has one of the most "consistent voices" ever recorded, because you really can't hear a difference between "live" and "studio".
Always loved Bob & SBB's music, amazing songwriter/singer! I saw him many years ago, just before he got throat cancer! He was able to recover and make a comeback after that!! I think it was around 1980 or so! If I remember correctly, he had his surgery and treatment at the Cleveland Clinic (world renowned at the time for Cancer treatment)! Saw him again a few times after his comeback!
Bob Seger is a crossover artist, many of his songs played on both Country and Top 40 stations back in the day. He is one of the few 1970's and 1980's artists I got to see live in concert.

But I do remember back at that age, even though I didn't fully understand it, we all know how those years can sometimes be really difficult, and so it made an emotional imprint on me and it just felt right to me. Another huge hit that he had about looking back, is called night moves. And then he also has a bunch of rockers. Kathmandu is particularly intense. Thank you for this reaction. In my opinion you can't go wrong with Bob Seger. Great voice, great lyrics and great music. Katmandu a song of his should be a song you check out. One of my favorites is Beautiful Loser , okay I'll offer up Fire Lake and Travellin' Man....he is an under rated talent.
His music is just so much "Americana". Everyone drives from their own life experiences. Love his music!!
Bob Seger was the first concert I ever went to in 1996. I was 18 years old and he was already a seasoned vet at this point. Still one of the best concerts I have ever attended. He has so many great songs and hits. I hope you react to more of his catalog. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
My first concert seeing Bob in 1976. Back up band for Kiss, He pretty much stole the show from Kiss.
We talked about him the whole long drive back home that night.
This was my “dads music” for sure so I’m on the nostalgia train for this one. Wonderful to see you discovering all the older stuff 🙃
My all time favorite Bob Seeger song is still "Night Moves". Give it a try.
Bob Seager is a great storyteller. Please review his song called "Turn the Page". I think it will give you chill bumps.
