To me it speaks of regret & not truly appreciating those beautifully random moments which life gifts us from time to time. My conclusion is that ignorance truly is bliss.
I felt this way when first hearing this song in my youth. I've always seemed to be tethered to nostalgia...even prior to having even lived enough to have any.

You're exactly right, Van. Bob Seger could bring his message to the people. He's a POET, really, telling his stories, you know? By the way, you know his band was called "The Silver Bullet Band", yeah? Anyway, a few other BANGIN' songs of his you may want to react to:. "Her Strut", my FAVE; "Kathmandu", where he just simply blows it out of the water; & "The Fire Down Below" - when you hear it, you'll figure it out! Thanks for rockin' a great American songwriter.

My first night in Japan. I've got jet lag so it's 3:00 in the morning and I'm in bed, wide awake, listening to Casey Kasem's American Top 40 on the Armed Forces Radio Network. Casey plays "Against the Wind." I've heard the song before (Against the wind, yada, yada, yada) but I'd never LISTENED to the song. But laying there in the dark, wide awake with the radio playing low, I listened to Seger's lyrics. The next time I was in a store that sold CDs I bought the "Against the Wind" CD, because damn it, somehow Seger had been spying on my life and wrote a song about it. Still one of my favorite tunes.

The song is "songumentary" about his life. His youth; his relationship with is first girlfriend. His days as a rising touring musician; the strangers he thought were his friends( his promoters, managers, agents etc). Then his later life as an A lister touring musician running his own production company; deadlines and commitments, what to leave in, what to leave out (o his albums and live tour). It about his evolution from a young boy into manhood, into stardom.

In this song, as an older man, he reflects back through his life's journey as a young man to now being in the last years of his life. We all do this when we reach that age, when we say "I'm no kid anymore. I'm not able to do certain things the way I once was able to." It's just part of life.

Many times Bob Seger wrote about life's experiences. Personally this is my theme song through life, and I never forget its meaning because I've never stopped running against the wind. That's not bad for a 74 year old. 2 yr in college, 4 years in the Navy (1.5 Vietnam), 2 more years in college to get my degree. Worked for a company 37.5 years, retired because I was fed up. Two sons graduated from College, and my wife hates me. Still, I'm running against the wind until I die.

Al Green Shares his soul deeply it's the artist you need to give homage to not to not offend the crowd but the spirit of the artist. F what people think feeling with no words is all you need, it's the melody and emotions that are conveyed that matter. I can tell you're listening I read it on your face.

Janey says to me all the time, 'You allow more people to walk on you than anybody I've ever known.' And I always say it's human nature that people are gonna love you sometimes and they're gonna use you sometimes. Knowing the difference between when people are using you and when people truly care about you, that's what "Against the Wind" is all about. The people in that song have weathered the storm, and it's made them much better that they've been able to do it and maintain whatever relationship. To get through is a real victory.

Great guy!! His kids had always heard from their friends parents how popular they're dad was and how they had heard him in concert. But, after they were grown they kept after him, prove it dad lol so he decided he'd do a short tour to prove he could still pack a venue so he went back out on the road for about 6months with gray hair and all. He promoted it alil bit and took off and his kids got to see they're dad in concert, which I thought was awesome of him to do that for them. He still had it!!!

"Against the Wind" explores the space between care and indifference from friends and loved ones. It centers on maturation and memories, like many other Seger songs, and carries a tender, mellow tone. Seger pulled from his high school years as a cross-country runner to form the song's title-a metaphor for growing old. "Against the Wind" became one of Seger's most successful singles, reaching number five on the Billboard Hot 100. It also charted in Canada, Australia, and Belgium. It received high marks from music critics, with many praising Seger's songwriting. The song has been celebrated by generations of contemporary country artists, with covers ranging from Garth Brooks to Brooks & Dunn.

    " WE'VE GOT TONIGHT "
BOB SEGER helped get me through my early 20's! What an icon for me and so many people going through some tough times!
Also, would you please react to the latest release from Home Free, for Christmas it's really really beautiful!
" MARY DID YOU KNOW? "
It's been covered by many but not like this! Home Free has there own special touch on it!
    Thanks Van! Appreciate you lots!♥️

I think that this song is open to wide interpretation, which is the genius to the writing, and why and how it hits different people different ways. I have always interpreted this as just daily living. We make choices in life. Not everybody in our lives is going to agree with our choices, not matter how major or minor they are. So it could be going against: good advice, bad advice, a friend's advice, personal intuition.... To me it's kind of like a finding-your-way-in-the-world song.

Always in my Heart is one of Segers best vocal tracks to me Van… he sings awesome in each and every song… he jus SANGS on that track Bro… it’s a nice Valentines Day, Anniversary-type love song… I’d say plenty of little humans is runnin round planet Earth these days cause of that track if I was guessin’ Baaaahahahahahaha Always in My Heart is on the same album as a more well known killer travelin’ down the open highway track called Sightseein’… record they’re on is The Fire Inside…. Title track on that album’s a must listen as well. His piano playing is legendary and I think it makes people overlook his vocal abilities at times…

I've always loved the instrumentals in his songs, especially the piano... That piano is always so melodic and I wonder if it's him playing because he does play piano - not just the guitar. Love Bob!

His songs are extremely well-crafted and arranged. His songs so thoroughly composed. Piano by a man named Paul Harris who seems to have been a session musician.

“Running against the wind” means you need to provide effort while maintaining your life style, “running with the wind” means you are just going with the flow , no particular place to go!

Ah, that's the thing about runnin' against the wind...it's just about the most difficult thing you can do...when the world tells you to go one way...and you go another...the world may beat you down to the point where you just want some shelter...and things just seems to get more complicated the more you try to do your own thing, deadlines and commitments...but as you say, once you learn to love the adversity, something changes, and you love everything that wants to bring you down in a weird way...I don't really know how to explain it, but that's the feeling I get...
