Back in the mid-80's I was Alex and Andy's age and I went to college at FIT in Melbourne, FL. I remember a night driving from my home near Boston back to school in Melbourne by myself and it was about 3am or so as I drove down I-95 south through South Carolina. I felt like I was the only person on the highway. It was dark. And then "Main Street" by Bob Seger started playing on the radio. It was a bit haunting, but also uplifting. It made me feel sort of homesick even though I was home less than 24 hours earlier. Hard to explain, but I still remember that drive back to school almost 35 years later because of hearing that song that night.

Talk about nostalgia, I have a strange music related memory associated with Bob Segar. Growing up in Pinellas Country, Florida the very first concert I ever attended was Led Zeppelin playing at what was then called the Tampa Bay Stadium June 3, 1977. Two songs in the skies opened up with a typical Florida late afternoon thunderstorm. And instead of waiting it out the band left. Not surprisingly, a riot broke out as angry fans rushed the stage after learning that the band was not returning to the stage, even though the rain had let up. I was 14 years old and attending the concert with a friend, whose older sister had agreed to take us. We were way back from the stage and left before the riot broke out. But the ensuing traffic jam meant we were in gridlock for a couple of hours as everyone tried to leave. Night Moves was a very popular album at that time and we listened to it on tape a couple of times over that night. This became such a strong memory that ever time I hear Bob Segar it takes me back to that car in the traffic jam trying to get home from the rained out Zeppelin concert. We didn’t even know about the riot until we got home and learned that our parents had been in a panic about the news. Zeppelin subsequently took out a two page newspaper apologizing to their fans. My second concert was considerably better, as it was Peter Frampton September 4 of the same year in Orlando, Florida, on tour after the release of his Comes Alive album. This was one of those all day rock bowls, and included Kansas, J. Geils Band and Rick Derringer. But Frampton was the headliner, and he was fantastic!

    Stood there boldly
    Sweatin', in the sun
    Felt like a million
    Felt like number one
    The height of summer
    I'd never felt that strong
    Like a rock
    I was eighteen
    Didn't have a care
    Working for peanuts
    Not a dime to spare
    But I was lean and
    Solid everywhere
    Like a rock
    My hands were steady
My eyes were clear and bright
    My walk had purpose
My steps were quick and light
    And I held firmly
To what I felt was right
    Like a rock
Like a rock, I was strong as I could be
Like a rock, nothin', ever got to me
Like a rock, I was something to see
    Like a rock
    And I stood arrow straight
    Unencumbered by the weight
Of all these hustlers and their schemes
I stood proud, I stood tall
    High above it all
I still believed in my dreams
    Twenty years now
    Where they go?
    Twenty years
    I don't know
I sit and I wonder sometimes
    Where they've gone
    And sometimes late at night
When I'm bathed in the firelight
The moon comes callin', a ghostly white
    And I recall
    I recall
Like a rock, standin', arrow straight
Like a rock, chargin', from the gate
Like a rock, carryin', the weight
    Like a rock
Like a rock, the sun upon my skin
Like a rock, hard against the wind
Like a rock, I see myself again
    Like a rock

My personal view: when you are young, you run against the wind, you have fight and fire , and you want to take on any resistance. You fight with purpose to battle through ' the wind' . When you get older , you run against the wind, everything you do and want is a struggle , nothing comes cheap, easy or free. Life is lived daily against ' the wind' . On a side note I can just imagine the Silver Bullet Band hearing Bob break out "Let the cowboys ride !!" and them looking at each other questioning where that came from ... then just accepting, its Bob, let him go with it lol.

    It seems like yesterday
    But it was long ago
Janey was lovely she was the queen of my nights
There in the darkness with the radio playing low, and
And the secrets that we shared
    The mountains that we moved
Caught like a wildfire out of control
'Til there was nothing left to burn and nothing left to prove
And I remember what she said to me
How she swore that it never would end
I remember how she held me oh-so-tight
Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then
    Against the wind
We were runnin' against the wind
We were young and strong, we were runnin' against the wind
    The years rolled slowly past
    And I found myself alone
Surrounded by strangers I thought were my friends
I found myself further and further from my home, and I
    Guess I lost my way
    There were oh-so-many roads
I was living to run and running to live
Never worried about paying or even how much I owed
Moving eight miles a minute for months at a time
Breaking all of the rules that would bend
I began to find myself searching
Searching for shelter again and again
    Against the wind
A little something against the wind
I found myself seeking shelter against the wind
Well those drifter's days are past me now
I've got so much more to think about
    Deadlines and commitments
What to leave in, what to leave out
    Against the wind
I'm still runnin' against the wind
I'm older now but still runnin' against the wind
Well I'm older now and still runnin'
    Against the wind
    Against the wind
    Against the wind
    Still runnin' (against the wind)
I'm still runnin' against the wind
(Against the wind) I'm still runnin'
    (Against the wind)
I'm still runnin' against the wind
    (Against the wind) still runnin'
(Against the wind)runnin' against the wind, runnin' against the wind
(Against the wind) see the young man run
(Against the wind) watch the young man run
(Against the wind) watch the young man runnin'
(Against the wind) he'll be runnin' against the wind
(Against the wind) let the cowboys ride
    (Against the wind) aah
(Against the wind) let the cowboys ride
(Against the wind) they'll be ridin' against the wind
(Against the wind) against the wind
(Against the wind) ridin' against the wind...

It’s 5 years or so after Night Moves with only the Stranger In Town album in between. Together they make a great trilogy of albums by Seger. You guys should’ve seen him in concert.

Bob's story with The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section on his first album is well-worth looking into, even as a reaction. There was a misunderstanding with Bob's management over what constituted the rate on a "side" (album side vs. one side of a 45) and he had to leave after three songs, but enjoyed playing with them so much, hecame back to work with them for years, promising a share of the backend (royalties) to the musicians. Over the years, according to The Swampers, Bob has always made good on that handshake deal, and it's been a great good in their lives, since session players don't normally get a piece of that pie. There are many good amateur documentary interviews with the Swampers about this.

I’d never been a huge fan of him. There’d been a few songs I kinda liked, but high school for everyone else was Seger and Fleetwood Mac. ugh. I was all about Warren Zevon, Elvis Costello, the Ramones, Squeeze, the Police, etc. My appreciation for him increased as time went on. I had the opportunity to see him play Madison Square Garden before he began his retirement tour. And appropriately, Bruce showed up and joined Seger for a couple of songs. “Old Time Rock and Roll” was amazing to hear the two of them do together. I was fortunate to catch that on video. Seger gave it his all onstage. I wish I’d appreciated him earlier in my life. 💜
