I used to work on Stitch’s Great Escape and had a coworker who had been there since Alien Encounter. She told me that the Catwalk position was everybody’s favorite. Not only did they walk across the catwalk with the flashlight, but they also had water guns that they squirted at guests to simulate blood hitting them as they were “killed” by the monster. Apparently Alien Encounter was THE attraction to work at back in the day!!!

when i was 9 in 2012 my mom took me to disney world on that stitch ride and when the animatronic popped up i was scared as fuck and my mom was too, us being from Turkey and all we didn't know animatronics were a thing. We both were traumatised and got out immediately lol

Love Defunctland and this new series!! As a former cast member working at Alien Encounter, this takes me back working the catwalk position upstairs with the flashlight in our hands doing the hand moves. There was even a bed up there between the 2 two chambers if we got tired. We even had a bunch of us on the catwalk pouring water and scaring the guests on the last day of the attraction! We closed this ride with pride and was a blast working at Alien Encounter! Thanks for the great memories and keep up the amazing work!

The Lava Monster more than likely shared the same moulds as the Alien animatronic. Outside of Splash Mountain, it is quite rare for a figure to be reused. Instead, many share common moulds, ie. CoP characters in Spaceship Earth, Dreamfinder and the Mayor in Phantom Manor, Old Figment vs New Figment, etc.

Meir Teichman: Thats exactly what I heard. None of the fake bones they made looked real enough so they got skeletons from medical schools. Then they were replaced over time with real-looking fake ones. Except, of course, the skull on the head board.

    • @alexanderh9642
      @alexanderh9642 6 лет назад +26

In Disneyland, some bones are real, including the head board. In any subsequent park, they are all fake. The presence of the bones in California has led cast members to think of the ride as haunted, even going as far as to say goodnight to the ghosts once they close.

I can confirm this most certainly should be true. The first time I rode this ride I lost my glasses on Space Mountain. The second time (as my family visited every other year for a period of time in the late 90s), I had my mom hold my glasses in fear of this happening again. It has since been one of those things I'm always worried about happening on rides because of that first ordeal. I've never lost glasses on any other rollercoaster, but Space Mountain has this one little up-down that caused my glasses to jump up and off my face.

This was the only ride I didn’t go on in Magic Kingdom when I visited Disney as a kid and after watching the footage here, I’m glad I didn’t. My aunt, who took me and my father, forced me to ride every ride once and checked them off as we went (even if I didn’t want to… I’m looking at you Dumbo ride!) but this is where I put my foot down. I had a severe phobia of aliens as a child and even though I had to be about 10 at the time, i started crying in the happiest place on earth! I must have been the only kid at Disney having a tantrum because I DIDN’T want to go on a ride and the adults I was with wanted me to. What horrible memories this ride conjures for me of that trip! Good riddance to this ride I say!

Sadly no theories for defunct rides. However I’ve never been able to get a straight answer from cast members if the puppet at the end of the tower of terror can turn his head or not. Sometimes if you look at him while the vehicle is turning towards the exit door, it seems that he moves his head. I could never tell if this was an illusion from the metal gates on the side of each vehicle or is his head actually turned. Every time I’ve asked a cast member they said that some people say his head does turn, some people say it doesn’t. I guess not super relevant to this series of defunctland rides but it is a theory I’ve always wondered about!

    Love this new series!!!
I have something that I want researched (I’ve tried myself but couldn’t find the original footage...) Back in the 90s the Disney Channel had a mini series called “Imagineer That!” starring Tom Morrow who would “interview” Imagineers about things in the Disney parks. This particular special was about roller coasters having loops and the physics involved. There was a short shot of a Disney coaster in a darkened place and the ride vehicles looked like something they were from a version of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, but the footage was of them going through a loop. What I want to know is what this ride is and where is it? From all of my research I haven’t found a BTMRR having a loop!

This is a fantastic idea for a series. For some reason, my family is convinced that originally, Mission: SPACE was longer -- that is, before the first person with health problems got on the ride to ruin it for the rest of us, they claim that, after your X-2 deep-space shuttle has skidded to a stop past the runway and the ground beneath it collapses, rather than pitch back (which violates the laws of physics), they claim you DID fall forward and the final "crew prompt" was to quickly push the flashing button to re-ignite the engines before the craft crashes at the bottom of the canyon. Please set them straight.

Ooh, I love series like this, that investigate rumors and theories. I'd love to see an episode investigating the rumor that they used real human bones in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. I guess the story is the fake bones at the time didn't look real enough, so they used actual human skeletons, which were later removed and given a proper burial when fake skeletons were finally realistic enough. But some people claim that they're still there; that they never got replaced, or that parts of them are still there. And of course some people say Disney never used real bones. It's a good mystery I think.

I've done a lot of reading into Extraterrestrial because of the controversy/scare level of the ride, but my favorite by far is how Wisner tried getting ALIEN for the ride, which would've helped market it in and of itself, which they had already used at GMR.
Also, how Sparky (or whatever the name of the pre-show alien) is reskinned for Stitch's Great Escape. How kids will never know.

Alien Encounter was basically Stitch if it was actually scary (pretty much tiptoeing the line between PG-13 and R), and also actually good. Wasn't perfect, but it was light years beyond what replaced it.

So many people have such great memories of all this stuff. I remember some of the promo shows that were shown on Disney Channel when I was a kid in the 80s and 90s. Sadly, we could never afford to visit. :(

I remember going on this ride as a kid. My parents did not think it was going to be that scary since it was Disney World. My brother was like 7 and it terrified him! He was crying the entire time, especially when the "blood" from the killed guy dripped on you. It pretty much ruined the entire trip because he was too scared to go on anything else for fear it would be like that ride. I remember him always going "will this ride be like that alien one? Cause I don't want to go on it".

The year was 1996, I was 12-years old and my mum and grandma pulled me and my younger sister out of school so go to Disney World using the 5-day hopper pass. As a mature and already very cynical tween I was not excited about going, I'd have preferred to go see wildlife at a nature reserve, or take in some Roman ruins at Italy and already saw this as more about my mum and grandma living out a fantasy. I did my best to indulge them, smiling at the right times and saying what I thought were the right, appropriate things and I can't deny that I had a little fun here and there.
The one ride that I was genuinely excited by though was Alien Encounter, rather than appealing to some Disney childlike wonder I had already outgrown, this was speaking to the science fiction nerd I was and made it very clear this was the right I was most looking forward too.
Alas, I had underestimated just how much this really was about my mother and grandma, while stringing me along in the months leading up to the trip, one day we had assigned for the Magic Kingdom, using the other 4-days for Epcot, MGM Studios, Typhoon Lagoon and that old River Wild one, it was made very clear that we would NOT be doing that ride. It clear that even wanting to go on it was killing their 'vibe' as they so desperately wanted to live out their 'dream' of taking 'sweet,' 'innocent,' 'wonder eyed,' children to Disney World and my interest in a ride like this, rather than say getting excited about riding the Dumbo flying elephants, was a sign I was growing up that they just wanted to ignore.
To say I was disappointed was an understatement, I had put in so much effort to play the part they wanted, the element of sincerity behind the act was that I did love them deeply and wanted to show my appreciation for all they did for me rather than say drag my feet around and constantly roll my eyes while making bored, sarcastic comments. I hadn't asked them for anything the entire trip and I was struck by the disconnect between how I seen them acting in the months leading up to it in front of friends and family, talking about how much they were doing to give me and my sister the holiday of a lifetime, that they wanted to give us the best childhood memories and the trip itself where me and my sister were dragged around to the rides they decided we should go on and they attempted to make me feel guilty for asking to go on the one ride I was genuinely excited by.
Seeing all this footage of the old ride brought all this stuff to the surface and made me feel a little melancholy for a childhood memory I never got to have and seeing now what the ride was like I know my 12-year old self would have been utterly blown away and would have been buzzing about it for weeks afterwards,
For those who got to experience this as kids, your lucky barstards! :P For anyone reading this who is thinking of taking your own kids to Disney World, please, talk to them and find out what they really want and don't make this all about you.

I don't know what is more terrifying...
The fact that Michael Eisner is standing around a bunch of dudes holding M-16's, or that Disney has a bunch of 'prop' M-16's laying around...

Also there's two rumors I've always heard growing up in the Orlando area wine is that someone died during the construction of Haunted Mansion in Florida. And to someone died when they fell into the Jaws pool in Universal FL.

First Defunctland I watch is about one of the few things I remember of going to Disney World as a kid. Stereo sound of the alien making noises in your ears, and WARM, HUMID air in "stereo" breathing on your neck as the alien panted and made noises. Fricking awesome. A guy above on a grated platform who gets attacked by the alien. You hear a crunch and get hit with something warm and wet.

This ride scared the hell out of me as a kid. Now that I’m an adult, I don’t think it would bother me as such. I might be the only one who thinks this but, the original concept of having the xenomorph from Alien, I don’t think it would have been as scary. That would’ve been awesome.

The monster from YTTCOTE could still be a reskin of a *spare* animatronic.
    A. spares allow attractions to stay open while key animatronics are being repaired.
    B. Some 2-theater attractions were originally designed as 4-theater (the 'spare' could have been intended for theater 3 or 4)
