So I work in Walmart. Overnights but still. I was ringing my stuff through, and noticed this 70ish year old women buying roughly 20 gift cards. I asked her why she needed so many gift cards, and she said that someone from Microsoft said her stuff was compromised. Immediately called over the CSM, who call the on duty manager, who called the police. They explained to her what it was, so then she called them back and uh, sheesh. There's nothing more crooked on this planet than a Kolkata cop. Scam centers were making about 60k USD per day about 2yrs ago. Only physical pushback will register in this case. I've read about some scammers being caught by New Delhi & while probably symbolically, they were sent to prison. Some of the scammers have their identities shared on Indian social media sites - everyday, good, decent Indians are frustrated with how they're having to share this awful reputation with scammers, despite living honorably & peacefully & working incredibly hard. Sometimes, scammers ID'd publicly are so devastated, they take a shortcut to that big gift-card rack in the sky. To that, I say LOL (lots of love).

When you stress someone out and adrenaline starts pumping often times people don't think through what sounds off. Especially when talking to someone who sounds like they know what they're doing and are offering you aid to "save" you from this imminent danger. It's disgustingly easy to scam people, especially when people get into desperation mode. If you were at risk of losing everything I imagine the oddities wouldn't occur to you right off because that wouldn't be your main focus. Not to mention that a lot of scam artists are *really* good at sounding legit, terrifyingly good. The amount of times my parents have believed a scam that even made me almost believe it is scary.

Sweet she was saved from being taken, last week we had an elderly crippled man come into my hardware store trying to buy gift cards "to use online" which made no sense, I couldn't get up there in time to talk to him and the cashier said when he found out the cards were only good at our store he said he was going to the grocery store across the street (we are a small town of 4000 people). So I called the owner of the grocery store but when he answered, he said he wasn't in town but he would call the store. I was sick to my stomach all day. The next day, the owner came into my store and I asked him about it, they had gotten to him before he purchased the cards and found out in fact was being scammed. I felt a lot better after that! People who prey on the elderly are just pure evil.
