@@AMiniNinja1 The D&D Episode! I hope hope hope you don't skip it (it was banned because Chang puts on Dark Elf makeup which was accused of being black face (and even that was addressed in the episode) but people got mad even though it was clearly a depiction of the fantasy elven race that's been around for decades).
This episode starts the "something that happened hours ago in Greendale has developed years worth of history, clothing, culture, slang, lore and sociological effects around it" that I love so much in Community.
One might argue that this is where the show realized it COULD lean hard into this sort of thing, and that's exactly what we wanted. They're going to have so much fun watching this show!
The fact that this outstanding piece of television does not crack my personal Top 10 of Community episodes should tell you how much absolute greatness is yet to come. It's #11 for anyone counting.
Great point. This episode is essentially perfect, but you're right, its probably not even in the top 10. That's how crazy great community could be on any given week. I don't have a full ranking or anything, but I think my favorite episode is, and I'm blanking on the real title, the ACB episode. Another I really enjoyed was contemporary American poultry.
I see the beginning as Contemporary American Poultry, but Modern Warfare upped the ante. Definitely was the most original sitcom in a long time when it came out, even if much of the show was referential. To walk that line as brilliantly as they did is a testament to the cast, the Russos and that mad genius Dan Harmon.
Community was excellent from episode 1. Episodes like Modern Warfare wouldn't mean anything without the excellent writing and characters from episode 1.
The episode itself is basically the greatest sitcom episode ever, as far as it qualifies as such, but yeah, somehow they keep invoking it and make it work almost all the time. There is so very little I don't like about the entirety of Community, it's absolutely nuts.
Let's be clear: season 1 is great television. Even as a normal sitcom, it is amazing and unique. But Contemporary American Poultry and Modern Warfare transforms Community completely. You can feel the mutation still happening in the last two episodes, culminating in Anthropology 101, which basically says: this isn't your normal sitcom; we have our own rules, now excuse us while we go to spend our entire budget before mid-season.
Britta may famously be “the worst”, I actually love her character, love the way Gillian Jacobs plays her perfectly, and think she often becomes REALLY funny as the show goes on
For those wondering about the frequent shots at Glee, both shows actually shot on the same lot and started around the same time, so Dan Harmon likes to make fun of them whenever he can.
This episode was a test for what's to come. Between this and the Chicken finger episode, Dan realized they can do perfect parodies and homages//event episodes. S2 onwards is going to be nearly all this. Enjoy
According to Jeff's actor, this episode was so chaotic that one of the show's hire ups ordered for the filming to stop when he visited the set, worrying that it would cost too much or something (I can't remember). But the director just waited for him to be out of sight before he turned around and said "Let's keep going."
Absolutely amazing episode and the moment I fell in love with Community! This episode was actually directed by Justin Lin (Fast & Furious) after being approached by the Russo Brothers. And eventually the paintball episodes were the catalyst for Kevin Feige to approach the Russo Brothers to work on Avengers!
I agree with Eric, faking being good is just as valuable as doing it out of your own heart. That doesn't make someone a better person of course, but it still helps the people the good is done for.
The misunderstanding was that Aaron thought "Fake good" referred to doing good in front of other people, and then back-stabbing them when their backs are turned. Faking the action, e.g. lying about donating to charity, vs faking the intention, e.g. lying by saying it's for purely altruistic reasons. A better way to phrase it would be "Doing good for the sake of appearing good, vs for actually altruistic reasons."
Same. And then they just continued putting out masterpieces. The show somehow managed to have Donald Glover leave and still pull off the genius that is meowmeowbeanz.
Also, since you guys love the Fast&Furious franchise, this was directed by Justin Lin. And fun fact, Sony/NBC hated this episode so much they sent executives to the set to tell Lin to shut down production. He said absolutely, then went back to filming as soon as they walked out
As excellent as the first season of "Community" is, the true greatness of this series doesn't really begin until this episode. Congratulations, gentlemen -- you've made it! Enjoy the rest of the ride!
I loved the Warriors reference "Study Group, come out and plaaaay" They even had the sound of clinking bottles So good Chang as Chow Yun-Fat in the John Woo movie Hard Boiled 👍👍

I loved every single nod to some of the greatest action movies ever made, Terminator, The Matrix, Predator, The Warriors, any John Woo movie, Die Hard and Rambo: First Blood Part 2.
One of the best discussions. Those paintball stories were amazing. The thing Eric and Aaron are both missing in their argument is that good/bad isn't something you ARE, they're things you DO. Doing good is doing good, and the only time your reasons matter is if they affect whether or not you keep doing good.
God I wish I could watch this episode for the first time again like these guys. I've seen this so many times now and it's still fantastic every time I watch it. I've never seen another show do something so unique like this which makes it so much better. Pure brilliance from Dan Harmon and Justin Lin to create such a great episode. I basically had priority registration every year I was at college. Nothing official, but I was majoring in computer science and everyone in computer science, software engineering, and IT all knew this alternative way to register for classes on these old VAX servers nobody else knew about, connecting remotely through a command line interface. When registration opened every term, everyone else used this really laggy web interface that would take all morning to log into, and usually would time out and force people to start over repeatedly, at which point classes would have filled up. Us more technical folk used the secret command line interface and would be registered in a couple minutes, get the best schedules. I frequently had Fridays off completely, most terms my classes were all in the afternoon so I could stay up late and sleep in. It was great. Anyway, I can definitely understand how students would go crazy over priority registration. Unless one is their own boss, working some freelance gig, there are few times in life when one can have that much freedom of schedule.
To Eric’s point about “Fake Goodness”; it’s basically the *Golden Rule” where you do unto others as you would have them do unto yourself. The purpose of which is a fear based motivation to avoid living in a world of assholes by _not_ being an asshole. Not an easy task.
