If you watch the commentary on this episode, it's totally worth it. There were a lot of unused jokes, like when Britta gets out of the bathroom, Abed asks her "did you release the Kraken?" And she gets really offended, but it turns out that the reason he asked that, is because they had set up their toilet to play movie quotes whenever someone flushed
The "evil parallel universe goatee" thing comes from the TOS Star Trek episode "Mirror Mirror" -- transporter accident switches Kirk, McCoy, Uhura and Scotty with their counterparts in an "evil" universe. In that universe, Spock has a goatee. (Technically it's a van dyke.)
It technically goes a bit further than that. At the time that Star Trek was filmed, being clean shaven with a military haircut was seen as the ideal 'heroic' look, and someone with a beard was seen as being a "no-good layabout" type of person. So logically, when one made an evil character, or an evil version of a good character, adding a beard was the obvious visual cue. A goatee was chosen because of its associations with psychologists and scholars to signify someone both evil and intelligent. It's also the reason why the Klingons typically have goatees in the original series, and why the Master usually has one in Doctor Who.
It's also worth pointing out that evil Spock wasn't much different from regular Spock. Without emotion, acting solely on logic, and in either universe, Spock simply wanted order and obedience of the (relevant) rules. And it was "evil" Spock who was instrumental in helping the crew get back to their own universe.
I believe the purpose of this episode was to show how the group dynamic changes when different people are removed. Just based on my own observations: Abed- The group loses its innocence and things are tense. Britta- She forgets her self worth and falls for the first creepy pizza guy she meets. Pierce- Britta and Troy's relationship flourishes Jeff- The group lightens up a bit without him to hold them down (sometimes he needs to hold them down to keep them from flying to close to the sun) Troy - CHAOS!!!

Since no one said it yet, the goatee thing from the evil universe comes from Star Trek, where in the evil universe Spock had a goatee. South Park was just referencing that, just like Community did in this episode. :)
It's late but I'm going to comment anyways cuz I none of my friends watch this show and I just started. I actually take Britta and Troy's getting along in that timeline in that they're both kinda good for each other. Actually it may be more like Troy is good for Britta. Troy respects Britta and treats her like a person whereas Britta does respect Troy and his interests as he moves further away from the high school jock he use to be. This episode was great. I also like the dichotomy of Troy's absence bringing chaos while Jeff's absence takes away the tension. Jeff is the leader but he never really lets anyone let down their guard which is bad when everyone is trying to relax and not put up a front.
Even though that happened in Pierce's timeline, I guess the connection between Troy and Britta makes sense when they have a baby they name Chewbacca in Abed's timeline. That was when Jeff reminded Annie of her father, Britt called Shirley out on being a pie-pusher, Troy hoped Pierce would die alone, and Abed found a nickel in the hallway. November 28, 2020, 12:59am
Since the group without Troy leads to the darkest timeline, that means that all the time since Troy left on the Childish Tycoon: the group fell into another dark timeline. There must be another timeline where Troy rejects Pierce's offer and the show continues
"South Park" "This is The Flash!" Guys. Please. Show some Nerd Culture. The Evil Goatee timelime is a reference to Evil Mirror Universe Spock in Star Trek. Kids these days. Psh....
Dude, it goes WAY further than that. Such beardstyles were common in silent movies era to indicate villains, which in turn were probably inspired by some real-life evil historical figures with similar goatees. Everything is much older than you think. Just consider that many modern superhero tropes and quirks can be found in frikking Zorro...
@@przemysawzanko6700 of course, but I was referring to the actual evil timeline TV trope, not facial hair being connected to representations of evil or malice throughout human history. This instance is obviously referring to that original Star trek episode, in all it's cheesiness.
I love how this is a bottle episode using one location the whole time but is so engaging and hilarious that you don't notice. The concept also shows how the group may be like if each member ever left the study group and expand on their characters. That and introducing a Chekov's gun in the 1st timeline and have it return in the 'evil' timeline. Lol
The trope of "Evil Abed" and "Evil Cartman" having goatees comes from Star Trek (the original). In an episode called "Mirror, Mirror," Captain Kirk and few others accidentally crossed over into a mirror universe where Starfleet was an evil racist Empire. There, they encountered an "Evil Spock" who had a goatee (to differentiate him from regular Spock).
I wonder if Abed just explained the plot ending of Rick and Morty at the end of the episode. "Return somehow to the prime timeline. Destroy the good versions of ourselves and reclaim our proper lives."
In dungeons and dragons, trolls regenerate, even if a tiny piece survives. This regeneration is shut down by fire or ACID. Seems like Hector the well-endowed knows his trollhunting.
Great Episode. Everyone else has explained the goatee, so I won't, but it is a classic trope which i was surprised the normies did not know. The song "Roxanne" is about the red light district of Amsterdam. "Putting on the redlight" does not mean to stop someone, like a traffic light. "Putting on the redlight" means open for business . . . as a prostitute. Lyrics: "You don't have to put on the red light ... You don't have to sell your body to the night" The singer, Sting in this case, is asking Roxanne not to work as a prostitute tonight. Not important to the episode, but important for kids to know. And knowing is half the battle. . . . . G.I. Joe
The best timeline happens for a lot of reasons. Jeff going ensures that Britta gets to play her song and be happy, meaning she doesn't start smoking. Jeff hitting his head as an act of karma instead of by pure accident means that he doesn't escalate things with Annie. By singing Roxanne uninterrupted, Pierce isn't able to start his sex story, Troy doesn't get focused on Britta specifically, and Abed doesn't spend his time leading Britta to the bathroom, thus making him miss out. Additionally, seeing Troy and everyone else happy means the troll gets thrown away by Pierce, thus preventing a fight with Troy and Abed. Shirley being there ensures the pies don't burn and she doesn't flip out; Annie being there ensures nobody finds out about the gun or gets hurt. Finally, everyone dancing and having a good time means that Jeff can't bring himself to stop the singing when he comes back.
One of my fav episodes!! Really keyed in what happens when there's a piece missing of the group! The evil timeline was the one that Troy left. There were speculations that the 'true' timeline was the one where Abed went for the Pizza, since Shirley knew about Britta's "Marijuana Lighter" in 3x03 (which production order wise was after this episode) and she only knew she was smoking pot in that timeline.
