Ah John Oliver, one of my favorite characters in the whole Series, if I'm being honest. Before he turned into a Host for ,,whatever kind of Show Last Week tonight is". I only know it isn't comedy, because after the main story I am usually sad.

The atheist rant line happens later in the show, could be he lost his faith. Or it could just be a cultural language thing, lots of atheists in majority theist countries use religious terms that they picked up through being surrounded by it. Though the rants would make sense if he was in his “angry atheist” phase that lots of new atheists go through when they deconvert.
