During either the late 70s or early 80s my dad was the front of house engineer for Jackson. My dad's sister, whom I never met, was losing her battle with cancer right as one of Jackson's big tours was about to begin. My dad sat down with Jackson and explained that he had been spending a lot of time with his dying sister, but also badly needed the money from going on the tour. Tours can go on for months or even years, so if he left to mix the shows, there was a good chance she wouldn't be there when he returned. Dad said that he could not make up his mind and he may have to find someone to replace him. Jackson told my dad "I'll make up your mind for you." He then told my dad to go be with his sister during her final days, and paid his entire salary up front for that tour. Fast forward about 40 years and I have backstage passes to one of Jackson's shows at the Ryman because of the work my dad did with him. I instantly started crying as I sat down in my seat, I cried on pretty much every song he played. I may have bothered the people in front of me, but oh well. After the show we found our way backstage, I wasn't expecting to meet him but he showed up. I cried even more when he called me out by name and asked how each of my parents are doing, also by name. They had recently gotten divorced so it hit especially hard, I let him know they both love him. I think all my crying weirded out my friend who was with me, but I don't think he realizes how much I love Jackson Browne as a person, in addition to him writing most of my favorite music ever. Jackson Browne has a beautiful soul and is an extraordinary human being. He will always be one of my favorite people ever, not just song writer.

I couldn't figure it out. At that time this song Jackson sang explained how I felt. I must have listened to it a thousand times. That was over 30 years ago. Today I am a 75 year old grandfather and I thank him for helping me cope with all that grief. It's an amazing song that helps me face deeply rooted feelings even today. Life goes on after the dancer has left the stage but the memories of her grace and beauty linger forever. Thanks Jackson for helping me carry on.

I'm so sorry you're not getting a donated kidney my poor brother in law are desperately waiting on a kidney and sadly waiting so long The Drs said his kidneys must be at I believe 9 or 13th % inorder for them to put you on the kidney transplant and they now put him on a list that is 1 to 5 years wait, sadly. They have put him in the hospital a few times to flush out his kidneys, but I'm scared that he's never going to get a transplant and when he gets the transplant it will be a kidney that has hepatitis. This is sad and I ask all of you please donate your organs or your children it will save lives and your son would be part of life again, but this time a hero. Please donate life. God help all of you who are suffering and scared I promise everything will be right even if your life is ending it will begin again in heaven

At 76 my final eye wink is nearer now than when I was 25. Life has been a series of mountains and valleys. Painful divorce in ‘73 that I have never gotten over. But God has been faithful over the yrs. I can’t claim I have been faithful all the time. Life has been good. Take a lot of comfort from Jackson’s music

It was not written for his wife , because of the time line, but it brings a tear every time for anyone that you have ever loved . As he said, the art of writing is so that the individual can interpret the words ( I’m paraphrasing).
I told my younger and only brother, (amongst six sisters); to bury me to 'For A Dancer' when the time came. Never did it occur to me that I'd bury him to this fine song when he passed unexpectedly 12 yrs ago at the young age of 36. He was 14 yrs my younger and left behind 2 children and a wife. The first article I ever wrote as a young journalist in October of 1974 was a record review of the incredible "Late For the Sky" album. The header to that review read: "Keep a fire burning in your eye; pay attention to the open sky, you never know what will be coming down." It's almost prophetic. 21 yrs before my brother passed, I had a vivid nightmare in which I saw every item, color and detail in the mortuary viewing room exactly as they were to be. I saw the teddy bear inside his bronze casket which his Son placed there, I saw his distinct uniform which he was buried in and everything else in the mortuary room appeared exactly as I saw them in that bad dream and the horrible reality during his funeral. He was but a child when the nightmare occurred. I could of never guessed his profession to become or uniform. I don't normally believe in such things, but there is no denying such a mystery or phenomenon that occurred. Even then, I did not forsee the unexpected moments or events that claimed his precious young life. RIP Dear Angel. *"Keep a fire burning in your eye... you never know what will be coming down"!*

I just heard this song being play on the new Netflix series, "A Man on the Inside," starring Ted Danson. It's based on a true story about a senior citizen man hired to live in a retirement home to try and solve the theft of an heirloom necklace from one of the residents. It's a good series that give one lots of food for thought. This song fits perfectly at the end of episode 2. Love the strings with the piano . . . what a gift - thank you, Jackson.

Many years ago I had a relationship with a very talented musician who played Jackson Brown songs including this one. This was in the 1970's, and after my college years we broke up, and I lost track of him until many years later when I found out that he froze to death in a park in LA. Whenever I hear Jackson's songs, I think of this boy and I wish him to be rested now in peace.

I saw Jackson with David Lindley in Arcosanti, Arizona in the summer of 1976. For A Dancer continues to be one of my favorites. Lucky me got right up next to the stage and even got to meet him afterwards. When he began to sing Before The Deluge, monsoon clouds that were forming behind him started closing in and then about halfway through the song the clouds let loose, wind blowing, lightning and Jackson kept singing until he finished the song. I have never seen anything like that since. Those guys were real troopers to do that as all their equipment was also getting wet. A monsoon storm in Arizona is like no other. One of the best concerts I ever attended and I attended many during those college years.
Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt are the two performers that I can't listen to passively while doing other things, such depth to the lyrics and music. I have to sit and experience it. My life partner died in 1999, I listen to this song and I am aware that the grief in some ways is just below the surface, but not just in a sad way after so many years. People who are an important part of out experience never really leave us. There is something healing about great music.

I can't even articulate the effect his music has on me. I've been listening to him since the 70's when I saw him and Bonnie Raitt together in Memphis one night when we were just cruising the streets of downtown Memphis and saw his name on a marquis for the now defunct Auditorium South Hall, as fine a small venue as exists today. We bought floor tickets for 6 bucks each and the seats ended up being in the last row behind a big concrete column. There were two empty seats directly center stage in the front row so I grabbed my buddy and we went to those seats knowing we were going to be kicked out of them eventually. No-one came to claim them and we ended up basically being serenaded all night, first by Bonnie, then by Jackson and then they performed together right in front of us for a full set. It was like they were singing just to us. It was a magical moment I'll never forget. He's been a mainstay on any playlists of mine and what's odd is that I'm just now paying close attention to this song for the first time. I have no idea how I've missed the incredible power of this tune.

Like many of you I've been listening to Jackson for a long, long time (37 years now). Along the way I have listened to a wide range of true artists. I have yet to hear anyone who consistently touches the soul the way "JB" has. His songs, no matter how many times I have listened to them, leave me amazed. So much talent. He is, in my opinion, the finest songwriter of my lifetime.

In my book, "Above His Shoulders" and no I am not touting it for money the proceeds go to treatment centers for sexual abuse. He got me through my suicide attempt and has helped me help others , using his music in group therapy. Thank you Jackson I will forever be in your debt.

My dad died 3 years ago and we were so close like soul mates. I haven't been able to move on. Last week my uncle (my dads brother) was dying and I left the hospital and this song came on. He was Jeffrey Allison and he was born with cerebral palsy and he was a pure and beautiful little boy who loved to dance with me in his early and better, more blessed years. I grew up, and I went on with a luckier life, and I had a tombstone made for him, probably 20 years after his death. I'm blessed to have found Jackson Browne and people like you who appreciate and need him.

I lost the mother of my daughter in 1981 , two months after her birth . This song as well as Mother and Child Reunion from Paul Simon helped me through that phase . My wife of 31 years died 2 weeks ago , we played her favorite song at the funeral , " The Sweetest Gift " , a Mama Maybelle Carter song , covered by Emmylou and Linda . This is the first time I've been able to bring myself to listen to For A Dancer . I know Jackson wrote this for his Sara , but it could have just as well been written for my Toni . We've always loved J. B's music and this song has always been a source of solace to each of us .

My husband and I owned a 3 small mom and pop record stores in 1975. We were young and stupid and had no idea what we were doing but had the time of our lives. We had the privilege of seeing so many of the Laurel Canyon WEA groups for free thanks to record companies. Jackson changed our lives, we saw him whenever we could. Fast forward 40 years and we corporate burnout still WEA music lovers but Fred is dying from cancer. We are surprised by the trajectory of the disease and didn't talk things through. My bad, I was in denial. The one thing he did leave behind for me was a print out to the lyrics of this song for me. It is what we played at his small memorial. I always keep an eye toward the open sky and Jackson and Fred in my heart.

This was the actual performance that woke me up to Jackson Browne. I saw this Old Grey Whistle Test in my lounge room in Droitwich, England. I was 18 years old and my Dad had been killed in an accident a few months earlier. This song "spoke to me"; and thereafter, many of Jackson's songs did. For me - he is and always will be - one of THE greatest singer/songwriters of all.

My dad worked on the road with Jackson Browne as a live mixer and engineer in the seventies, they are still good friends. While they were on tour my dad's sister was losing a fight with cancer, dad couldn't decide whether to stay on tour and make money he needed, or go home and be with his sister, possibly jeopardizing the tour. He let Jackson know of the situation, Jackson TOLD my dad that he's going home to be with her with what ended up being her final days. Jackson has a beautiful soul.

I was one of those faithful fans since the 70's. I'm a young 54 now and still his words move me. Never so more than now, today the 11 month since I lost my husband suddenly. The pain flows through these words.
I went to hear Jackson a last week. The concert was lovely - a privilege every time. Seated adjacent to us was a man with his young son, about 10, curled in the chair next to him and leaning on him. I was moved by the thought that Jackson's music is still reaching people, drawing them together. His sentiments are so profound, full of loving reality... I've listened and loved this song for years... ...not realizing I would be hearing it "live" Monday (May 16th) evening at the Mahalia Jackson theater in N.O. (2 days after what would have been her 87th birthday). She passed away Feb. 11 this year and i cried many tears of joy at the show knowing I was able to share and be part of this dear and wonderful woman's life! Lost my beautiful wife to cancer at 40. My life just stopped. I was left with two young children that needed guidance but I was in complete shock. As hard as I tried I couldn't find my way. I couldn't figure it out.
At that time this song Jackson sang explained how I felt. I must have listened to it a thousand times. That was over 30 years ago. Today I am a 75 year old grandfather and I thank him for helping me cope with all that grief. It's an amazing song that helps me face deeply rooted feelings even today. Life goes on after the dancer has left the stage but the memories of her grace and beauty linger forever. Thanks Jackson for helping me carry on.

One of my high school friends included the line, "In the end there is one dance you do alone" in her yearbook inscription to me, and I memorized every word she wrote. She died of breast cancer over a decade ago, and this song now resonates more than ever. for that reason and so many others. The Drs said his kidneys must be at I believe 9 or 13th % inorder for them to put you on the kidney transplant and they now put him on a list that is 1 to 5 years wait, sadly. They have put him in the hospital a few times to flush out his kidneys, but I'm scared that he's never going to get a transplant and when he gets the transplant it will be a kidney that has hepatitis. This is sad and I ask all of you please donate your organs or your children it will save lives and your son would be part of life again, but this time a hero. Please donate life. God help all of you who are suffering and scared I promise everything will be right even if your life is ending it will begin again in heaven

At 76 my final eye wink is nearer now than when I was 25. Life has been a series of mountains and valleys. Painful divorce in ‘73 that I have never gotten over. But God has been faithful over the yrs. I can’t claim I have been faithful all the time. Life has been good. Take a lot of comfort from Jackson’s music

It was not written for his wife , because of the time line, but it brings a tear every time for anyone that you have ever loved . As he said, the art of writing is so that the individual can interpret the words ( I’m paraphrasing).
I told my younger and only brother, (amongst six sisters); to bury me to 'For A Dancer' when the time came. Never did it occur to me that I'd bury him to this fine song when he passed unexpectedly 12 yrs ago at the young age of 36. He was 14 yrs my younger and left behind 2 children and a wife.
The first article I ever wrote as a young journalist in October of 1974 was a record review of the incredible "Late For the Sky" album. The header to that review read: "Keep a fire burning in your eye; pay attention to the open sky, you never know what will be coming down."
It's almost prophetic.
21 yrs before my brother passed, I had a vivid nightmare in which I saw every item, color and detail in the mortuary viewing room exactly as they were to be. I saw the teddy bear inside his bronze casket which his Son placed there, I saw his distinct uniform which he was buried in and everything else in the mortuary room appeared exactly as I saw them in that bad dream and the horrible reality during his funeral. He was but a child when the nightmare occurred. I could of never guessed his profession to become or uniform. I don't normally believe in such things, but there is no denying such a mystery or phenomenon that occurred. Even then, I did not forsee the unexpected moments or events that claimed his precious young life. RIP Dear Angel.

Dave Lindley passed away from long haul covid. Tragedy. I had already cried about John Prine. Tears and massive respect for both of them.
I just heard this song being play on the new Netflix series, "A Man on the Inside," starring Ted Danson. It's based on a true story about a senior citizen man hired to live in a retirement home to try and solve the theft of an heirloom necklace from one of the residents. It's a good series that give one lots of food for thought. This song fits perfectly at the end of episode 2. Love the strings with the piano . . . what a gift - thank you, Jackson.

Many years ago I had a relationship with a very talented musician who played Jackson Brown songs including this one. This was in the 1970's, and after my college years we broke up, and I lost track of him until many years later when I found out that he froze to death in a park in LA. Whenever I hear Jackson's songs, I think of this boy and I wish him to be rested now in peace.
I believe with every fiber of my being,that Jackson Browne was put on this earth to be a Messenger to convey a great very inspiring idea about the human beings that we encounter on the daily basis. What a great human being.
I saw Jackson with David Lindley in Arcosanti, Arizona in the summer of 1976. For A Dancer continues to be one of my favorites. Lucky me got right up next to the stage and even got to meet him afterwards. When he began to sing Before The Deluge, monsoon clouds that were forming behind him started closing in and then about halfway through the song the clouds let loose, wind blowing, lightning and Jackson kept singing until he finished the song. I have never seen anything like that since. Those guys were real troopers to do that as all their equipment was also getting wet. A monsoon storm in Arizona is like no other. One of the best concerts I ever attended and I attended many during those college years.

Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt are the two performers that I can't listen to passively while doing other things, such depth to the lyrics and music. I have to sit and experience it. My life partner died in 1999, I listen to this song and I am aware that the grief in some ways is just below the surface, but not just in a sad way after so many years. People who are an important part of out experience never really leave us. There is something healing about great music.

I can't even articulate the effect his music has on me. I've been listening to him since the 70's when I saw him and Bonnie Raitt together in Memphis one night when we were just cruising the streets of downtown Memphis and saw his name on a marquis for the now defunct Auditorium South Hall, as fine a small venue as exists today. We bought floor tickets for 6 bucks each and the seats ended up being in the last row behind a big concrete column. There were two empty seats directly center stage in the front row so I grabbed my buddy and we went to those seats knowing we were going to be kicked out of them eventually. No-one came to claim them and we ended up basically being serenaded all night, first by Bonnie, then by Jackson and then they performed together right in front of us for a full set. It was like they were singing just to us. It was a magical moment I'll never forget. He's been a mainstay on any playlists of mine and what's odd is that I'm just now paying close attention to this song for the first time. I have no idea how I've missed the incredible power of this tune.

I have yet to hear anyone who consistently touches the soul the way "JB" has. His songs, no matter how many times I have listened to them, leave me amazed. So much talent.

I have seen Jackson in concert more tan any other artist. He has saved my life literally. In my book, "Above His Shoulders" and no I am not touting it for money the proceeds go to treatment centers for sexual abuse. He got me through my suicide attempt and has helped me help others , using his music in group therapy. Thank you Jackson I will forever be in your debt.

I first heard Jackson Browne through his popular hit "Doctor My Eyes.". I bought the album and I was hooked. His lyrical depth combined with accessable musicality is unmatched. "For A Dancer," of course, plumbs the depths of the human experience and mortality. It goes without saying that this level of artistry is not present in contemporary music.

My dad died 3 years ago and we were so close like soul mates. I haven't been able to move on. Last week my uncle (my dads brother) was dying and I left the hospital and this song came on. He died a few hours later. Me and my dad always loved Jackson Brown n went to several of his concerts together. I think my daddy played this song for me to help me heal which it has done.

Saw JB in 1978 at Cuesta College at a Diablo Canyon protect rally and also in SB county Bowl back then.
My best friend got killed the year this came out---he was 23 years old. This song gave us a lot of comfort then, and often, throughout the years. I have written the words to this on paper for others who have lost loved ones unexpectedly. It always helps.

I'm not crying......not this time, not yet, anyways ... but I know the moment and the meaning behind your tears. Your comment touches me because this is the lyric I had put onto my little brother's tombstone. He died when he was 8 years old - I was 12 - he had not spoken or walked for the last 3 or 4 years of his life. He was Jeffrey Allison and he was born with cerebral palsy and he was a pure and beautiful little boy who loved to dance with me in his early and better, more blessed years. I grew up, and I went on with a luckier life, and I had a tombstone made for him, probably 20 years after his death. I'm blessed to have found Jackson Browne and people like you who appreciate and need him.

When you lose someone close to you and gradually understand what that is, the cycle of life he sings about makes more sense. To the uninitiated it may seem maudlin. For those of us who know how short life can be, it is profound and soothing.
I bought this album in 1974 for a friend and ended up keeping it. This song I dedicated to my best friend at the time who was killed in a car accident way back when. I have now lost many more friends but this song always gives me solace.

I lost the mother of my daughter in 1981 , two months after her birth . This song as well as Mother and Child Reunion from Paul Simon helped me through that phase . My wife of 31 years died 2 weeks ago , we played her favorite song at the funeral , " The Sweetest Gift " , a Mama Maybelle Carter song , covered by Emmylou and Linda . This is the first time I've been able to bring myself to listen to For A Dancer . I know Jackson wrote this for his Sara , but it could have just as well been written for my Toni . We've always loved J. B's music and this song has always been a source of solace to each of us .

My husband and I owned a 3 small mom and pop record stores in 1975. We were young and stupid and had no idea what we were doing but had the time of our lives. We had the privilege of seeing so many of the Laurel Canyon WEA groups for free thanks to record companies. Jackson changed our lives, we saw him whenever we could. Fast forward 40 years and we corporate burnout still WEA music lovers but Fred is dying from cancer. We are surprised by the trajectory of the disease and didn't talk things through. My bad, I was in denial. The one thing he did leave behind for me was a print out to the lyrics of this song for me. It is what we played at his small memorial. I always keep an eye toward the open sky and Jackson and Fred in my heart.

This was the actual performance that woke me up to Jackson Browne. I saw this Old Grey Whistle Test in my lounge room in Droitwich, England. I was 18 years old and my Dad had been killed in an accident a few months earlier. This song "spoke to me"; and thereafter, many of Jackson's songs did. For me - he is and always will be - one of THE greatest singer/songwriters of all.

My dad worked on the road with Jackson Browne as a live mixer and engineer in the seventies, they are still good friends. While they were on tour my dad's sister was losing a fight with cancer, dad couldn't decide whether to stay on tour and make money he needed, or go home and be with his sister, possibly jeopardizing the tour. He let Jackson know of the situation, Jackson TOLD my dad that he's going home to be with her with what ended up being her final days. Jackson has a beautiful soul.
I saw Jackson Browne and David Lindley play this song this way at the acoustically fine Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee about 1976. The entire concert was great, but I especially remember the way they did this song. Even after over 30 years, it was unforgetable.
Everyone can relate to at least one of j.b.'s songs. It's like he he pours his life out for us to hear, and makes us want to cry--because we, too, have walked in those same shoes. Thanks j.b. for writing those feelings and letting me hear the words which i cannot express on my own.
I listened to Jackson Browne for 3 months after my mom passed I just couldn’t listen to anyone else his music is just so peaceful and so comforting to listen to

I was one of those faithful fans since the 70's. I'm a young 54 now and still his words move me. Never so more than now, today the 11 month since I lost my husband suddenly. The pain flows through these words.
I went to hear Jackson a last week. The concert was lovely - a privilege every time. Seated adjacent to us was a man with his young son, about 10, curled in the chair next to him and leaning on him. I was moved by the thought that Jackson's music is still reaching people, drawing them together. His sentiments are so profound, full of loving reality... "Into a dancer you have grown from a seed somebody else has thrown, Go on ahead and throw some seeds of your own..." I'm grateful for his songs.

I've listened and loved this song for years...
...not realizing I would be hearing it "live" Monday (May 16th) evening at the Mahalia Jackson theater in N.O. (2 days after what would have been her 87th birthday). She passed away Feb. 11 this year and i cried many tears of joy at the show knowing I was able to share and be part of this dear and wonderful woman's life!
Thank you Jackson for your beautiful songs and heartfelt emotions!

this song helps me grieve for my mum.. i'm only 25 and without her.. she LOVED Jackson Brown she was always so happy when he was playing... i miss her so much but am happy she enjoyed his music.. it will never hurt less that it did but listening to this music helps me remeber her, so i never forget how much she meant to me! all the best too you, i hope are hapy now and have moved on, but not forgotten all the best, all my love! x

This has got to be on my top 3 list - I just love being born to dance ~ " Let your prayers lift into space ..." I miss my mate of 34+ years - gone 31 days - I am not sure I can grow any more seeds , or even sow ~ I just want to follow the steps ......................in the end there is one dance we do alone .
