I heard Jackson Browne's "Rosie" for the first time this evening. That man could write one hell of a love song, even if it was about self-love. It was almost beautiful, until I realized just what he was getting at. lol
The most beautiful song about self love you're ever going to hear. It's not plan A but sometimes it just has to get done. This song is artistry at its best!
I guess there must be folks that just "thumb down" everything , because I can't imagine anyone with an ear for music thumbing down this song . Thanks for the music Jackson Browne
The reason people might be thumbing this song down is because the video is live, but the audio is the studio version. I would have loved to hear the live version....it's jarring to see the video when the audio doesn't sync.......
77 thumbs down? That was the year that it happened.😉😎 Sept, 1977. The day before my brothers graduation. It happened in Berkeley MO. ( I heard of it.) She also got 3 tickets to a Peter Frampton concert. 77 synchronicity😁 she was a star, already.
I've been listening to this album...and this song my whole life...since the late 70s...I didn't know what this song meant until a few months ago...lol..damn
@Theresa Amick I guess working backstage some back in the day I always understood the meaning, but I never thought about it much. To me it was always a great love lament song on my favorite Jackson Browne album.
I listened to this song many times in my misspent youth, but I was nearly 40 when My big brother explained it was about self pleasuring. It was so obvious but I just never put it together.
Yes I see it now. I never quite got it . The sound man just kept holding that beautiful girl in his imagination. This emphasizes the brilliance of Brown's writing...every line has meaning. Incredible song.
I am Japanese, so I don't know the meaning of the lyrics, but I like the melody and it still rings in my heart. I envy those of you who can understand the words. I admire all English-speaking people.
Hey my budda brother. Rosie is his hand , it's about a guy who loses the girl and has to masturbate to obtain sexual fulfillment, hence Rosie , his hand is Rosie palms and her 4 lovely daughters , I got to hand it to me ? You wear my ring , when you're holding me tight ? I gotta tell ya , it's MUCH cheaper , less trouble , no S.T.D.s easier to clean up afterwards and you dont.have " TO TALK AFTERWARDS " and later you.can fuck her mother and there's no excuse of that awkwardness later .
I had a friend who used to play and sing this all the time. When I told him what it was really about, he has never played it again, lol. Rosie Palm…hand it to “me”.
Only Jackson Browne could write a meaningful song about j***ing off. Amazing talent! Fell in love with him way back in the mid-70s. Nothing has changed. I could only hope to be 1/100th as good a writer.
I lived part of this song but I stayed by the sound man. It was all about who he was, and those eyes, his smile. We were kids, really.. I don’t know how or why but we lost touch.. He has never left my heart 💙 I think it was 1973?
back in the 70's I knew two people at work, her name was Rosie, his was John. Actually, Rosemary was her name. This song was just out. And one night, after work, we were all out in the parking lot, drinking Miller beer from 32 oz. bottles, most of that swing-shift crew, anyway. Somebody punched up radio station KINK in Portland and this song came on. That guy had really cheesy speakers but i had a nice sound system so i found that station and he turned his off and, dang... we all had Jackson Browne in our ears and the song was Rosie from my Pioneer rig, from my Buick. the bass was deep. I turned it up really loud, and there was some distortion but it was still so nice and right when Jackson was singing 'looks like me and you tonight' I looked over at John and Rosie and he had his arm so tight around her. Damn. I suppose we all are prone to recall some sweet moments from our youth, right? But that night in that parking lot Rosie was with John and I still shiver about how good their thing was.

Meine ROSI ist im letzten Jahr verstorben. Sie war mir immer eine gute Freundin in schwerer Zeit. Werde sie nie vergessen. Das Lied haben wir oft zusammen gehört.
To me the song is about so much more than masturbation. Rosie does not show up until after he lost the girl. Some people don't know the painful lonely empty space that comes when someone you desire fails to even notice you exist. Most of us have had a taste of that. Perhaps what Kundera was getting at when he introduces the word litost to the english language. Beyond the words it is a beautiful song.
Jackson says it at the beginning of this song....its not about masturbating OR about the drummer & some girl its about a guy who mixed the monitors on stage & a girl...listen to what Jackson says in the beginning people...
Singer/songwriter Jackson Browne is said to be slowly losing his eyesight. Doctors have yet to find out what could be causing this. Aaah, I thought it might have been that but why would you give your hand a pass to see the show and buy it a beer? So I listened carefully again, he never said the girl's name was Rosie! "You wear my ring" and when I turn out the light "I have to HAND it to me" that is classic double-meaning! I should have known, if Rosie was the girl that left him why would she wear his ring and be with him tonight? It all makes sense now.
Love this song ❤️.I'm 36 an my dad played this song for me about a girl I loved an it was like I was the sound guy..I cried all night like a bitch...an listen to it Everytime I drink..thanks for the song an the tears

Damn I drank a lot of alcohol to this song and the "Running On Empty" album. One of the greats.
I got to hang out with these guys for a few days when they were touring SoCal. I don’t remember anything from those days. I’m with ya!

It's a sad song. About us American men going home alone with just well, the right hand, with the right ... Rossie (sigh masterbation)
It is about masturbation. Rosie and her four sisters. And it is GREAT.
That's odd because this song turns many Americans Japanese.

She was standing at the load-in
When the trucks rolled up
She was sniffing all around
Like a half grown female pup
She wasn't hard to talk to
Looked like she had nowhere to go
So I gave her my pass
So she could get in and see the show
Well I sat her down right next to me
And I got her a beer
While I mixed that sound on the stage
So the band could hear
The more I watched her watch them play
The less I thought of to say
And when they walked off stage
The drummer swept that girl away
But Rosie you're all right -- you wear my ring
When you hold me tight -- Rosie that's my thing
When you turn out the light -- I got to hand it to me
Looks like it's me and you again tonight, Rosie
Well I guess I might have known from the start
She'd come for a star
Might have told my imagination not to run too far
Of all the times that I've been burned
By now you'd think I'd have learned
That it's who you look like
Not who you are
But Rosie you're all right -- you wear my ring
When you hold me tight -- Rosie that's my thing
When you turn out the light -- I've got to hand it to me
Looks like it's me and you again tonight, Rosie
