Saw this tour at Jenison Fieldhouse at Michigan State in 1978. Opening act was the excellent Karla Bonoff
The greatest thing about the video is that everyone involved looks they are having a great time performing and enjoying the song and working with one another. With the Cardboard Cutout Clones we get for performers today, who don't write their own songs, and can barely produce a product for video or consumption, it's a pleasure watching people who are passionate about their work and profession. A shout out to Rosemary Butler. If you look at it again, when they reach the point where she and Doug Hayward have finished their roles as Backups, she gives an upward motion of her left arm as if she is pulling the cord as the Stage Light blacks out over them. What a talented performer.
They really looked they were having fun but if you look closely you will also see the focus on their faces too as they were playing. These guys meant business and that showed in the performance. Simply incredible.
Her vocals are spot on for this song. Very cherry
One song I ALWAYS have to hear twice.
Jackson has the most gorgeous head of hair; love his music so much! He’s very easy on the eyes 🥰 What a band they were!!
I'm 62 love this song Manny Suarez here from Miami Florida 😅😅😅😅😊😊
One of my favourite songs of that era. Brings back fond memories. Thanks Jackson Brown. Rosemary Butler was a great back up singer then and still is. Beautiful voice. 😀 Russ Kunkle on drums. One of the all time greatest drummers. 👍 Who needs a whining, twanging , steel guitar when you have a class 1 Dobro player. RIP David Lindley.
Oh, I agree… Rosemary Butler is a goddess!✌️🫶
Who was the girl doing percussion? She was rocking out.
I am 65 coming in the next couple of weeks. This is my favorite song 1979 in Thailand refugee camp.
OMG - they all look so confident and that laid back yet incredible energy....so f'ing FINE!!! Just killing it.
This must be the best version of this brilliant song I have ever heard. Absolutely awesome. Thank you, Jackson and RIP David.
Jackson and I are the same age and this tune, without a doubt, is the song of my life.
Ah man, back when musicians had talent and songs had soul.
We were all so beautiful and powerful and full of magic and promise.
Prime of my youth, Running on Empty album changed my life, thanks Jackson! ❤ Props to the female voice on this; next level vocals!
I feel old but blessed to be around while this shit kicking music is still around and loved by music MUSIC people.
Rips me back to 19 years old and my stint in the USAF. Completely on my own, thrilled about it, and very, Very lonely. What a time!
For a guy who didn't think he needed drums, that drumming by Russ Kunkle is badass. Long live Jackson.
if i wrote this song, I would consider it a life's work complete in itself without the need to pen another note. Astonishing song.
He’d’ve been justified in taking that stance after “Saturate Before Using” ~sure glad he didn’t!
Bass - Bob Glaub
Drums - Russ Kunkel
Piano - Craig Doegre
Lap Steel - David Lindley
Percussion - Debra Dokken (from Bonnie Raitt's band) NOTE: Actually Jody Linscott as corrected below
Vocals - Doug Haywood and Rosemary Butler
Organ - ??? Can't tell from the brief shot of him at 1:26. Bill Payne of Little Feat according to Walrus Explosion, below.
Russ, Craig, David, Doug, and Rosemary were on the original recording.
Thanks
The percussionist is Jody Linscott according to the liner notes from the album No Nukes.
@@greypossum1 I looked it up and you are right. The funny thing is that Jodi and Debra bear a strong resemblance to each other.
Danny Kortchmar was guitarist on the original and toured with JB as well. On this concert Korthchmar was playing with James Taylor who followed JB that night. Also Leland Sklar played bass on the original and also was playing with James Taylors band this concert. Russ Kunkel the drummer played for both JB and JT that night...What a gig. ....Possibly Billy Payne on organ?
Jody Linscott grew up the next town over from me..she toured with the Who and was absolutely incredible
God, I love live music! Haven't seen this one before...
One of the best live performances Jackson did A great artist his music is legendary!!
65 I was 17/ 69 I was 21. This song is around 4 minutes long, but those lyrics stretch the song to a biography. For me, this song in timeless.
The entire band was having a blast. The bass player couldn’t stop smiling. Just an awesome fricken song and performance.
This is why you hear this live version of this song way more than the recorded one. This once-every-hundred performances that was so tight and spot-on and the crowd was so into it. Perfection.
The version on the Running On Empty album was live as well.
David Lindley was so brilliant. Saw him many times with Jackson. And several times solo. Even got to chat with him a couple times. Fantastic musician. Sweet person.
Incredible everything - Jackson Browne and his band at the time were unsurpassed. I saw him in concert and had his albums. As an old fart, it brings back so many memories. We even named (our not so good volleyball team) Runnin' on Empty. RIP David Lindley - you were the best...
Amazing performance of a great song!
My favorite song of all time! Jackson Browne taught me about activism & fighting for what’s right. And then we have Rosemary Butler… One of the best female singers alive. I treasure every experience I’ve ever been lucky enough to have seeing him live. ✌️🫶
I sense a total feeling of joy by watching this clip. Musicians having FUN. They way life SHOULD be.
This might be... the... best version he's ever done?!
totally agree. Very raw with tons of energy compared to the studio-- kind of like what Springsteen was doing in that era.
Man, has it been 45 years already???? That was a great concert. Gil Scott Heron was amazing too.
I love this song and Jackson Browne. This song is about life
yesterday and today. I.am so glad I glad I am part of this generation. God bless Jackson Browne
Damn, thought this song would have at least 2 or 3 million likes being one of the Best songs ever.
Heard this on a tv Commercial and have to go look it up I remember this song when I was14 what great music we had back then and as I stroll down the comments I don’t see none of us old school asking about if your here in 2019 hit like I’m not here for likes I’m here for the music and the band and to go back in time was born in the time where you played and made music not all this bull they are making now days lord bless the good old days rock lives on
Bob on bass makes me just smile every time I see this. They all were having a blast this night.
One of the greatest 70's songs. Rock and the roll.
First song I played as a DJ at WVVS college radio at Valdosta State.......it was my personal feeling back then.......now years later the road is smooth and straight and life is good!
This band looks so happy. Probably because they know that they nailed this performance.

It was fabulous. Still a great entertainer. Wish I'd get to see him again.
Holy shit, the energy in this performance is incredible. How's the woman playing ALL those percussion instruments?!
Ain't she something and I don't know.
