"Time spent in nature is never a waste," is absolutely true. It's why I am a photographer. I'm a crappy photographer, but I enjoy myself. It's a great excuse for a walk in the woods.
There’s a video on RUclips called “take amazing flying guillemot shots with your Sony, better than what’s down your street” somewhere. 😂. Great Chickadee call identification! Mnemonics work!
Seriously, it takes a huge amount of work to create these videos that we all enjoy. If you love landscape photography and you like Adam’s videos and images, you should buy his book. It’s brilliant. 👍
Such a talented photographer who never needs to rely on gear reviews or click bait titles for engagement… Hardcastle is just that good and gives people something they can laugh at, be inspired by… and indeed learn from.👍
Mark Smith has a great video on youtube about setting up the A1 for autofocus for action. He does alot of birding, BIF and stuff. Nice guy and very informative. Also, Mark Galer has some great tutorials as well. I'm a mark as well and I use the A1 but I wouldn't recommend myself🤣🤣
Agree those suggestions, also Steve Perry. try tracking wide for birds in flight and track small or medium spot where there is some background. Worth learning how to use the manual focus with magnification as that’s really useful if there are small twigs/leaves in the way. You will soon be giving ‘Seemon’ and his Canon arsenal a run for his money, and if not at first pack some consolation twirl bars 😊
In the summer of 2004, we camped in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. The gondola was not installed at the time at Cape Smokey. Going up or down a few of that hill’s hairpin turns, in a car with 3 children between 3 and 12 years old, while fog reducing visibility to 2 feet was not a great incentive to stop the car to grab a picture 😉but we did enjoy the sights along the Cabot Trail. On a different note, I’m really enjoying my copy of Chasing Awe and please thank Amanda for the Unicorn Ballerina sticker found in it; my spouse is a teacher and one of her 5 years old pupils will feel really lucky to be rewarded with “THE” 🦄sticker.
Your a lucky man Gavin, Amanda is adorable. my wife and I have been married 46 years, and she is my best friend, we kid and joke with each other like you guys.
Look up Mark Smith, amazing bird Photographer, I do enjoy your banter with your lovely Lady, keep it up and your great Landscape images !! Cheers from New Zealand
Here’s link to Mark Smith who shots with the A1 and this or one of his others should be a setup video. I used to watch him fox tips all the time when he only shot with Nikon. He does have the Z9 as well now. Great video scouting.
Very nice shot and well worth the hike I'd say Gavin 👍. Sometimes when I switch from my X-E1 to X-T2 I'm initially searching menu's for the ISO settings. Then give myself a good slap as there's obviously a huge dial dedicated to the function 🙄😂.
Sony A1, however, like you I am a wildlife and nature photography, sold the A1 for the Nikon Z9 and Z glass and it compliments my D850 very well. But to each there own for the job at hand. Going to watch the church restoration, sounds exciting mate.
As a brit who had no experience with bear spray previously I was amazed at how close you have to let the bear get before the spray is effective...I think that 3rd down sign on the Gondola sums it up!!
I grew up in Cape Breton and spent a summer working in the Highlands. It's a little;e piece of heaven. Have you investigated Halfway Brook? I don't know if it's been spoiled over the years but it was a gorgeous place in the early '70's.
I completely understand about taking bear spray all the time. Last year, I came within roughly 50 feet of a bear. It hadn’t noticed me yet, and I intended to keep it that way, so I slowly backed away and made it or the car. I didn’t have bear spray on me since it wasn’t a place really know for bears. Never again, always on me any time I go to the mountains.
Another brilliant one mate, I was watching this during work🤣and now I see your new video for Hardcastle Towers is up, I'm on the way. Oh by the way, your Amanda is the same character wise as my Dani, it's funny. ATB Marti🤙
Steve Perry has a great guide to using that camera; well assuming it's great as his Nikon (the brand I use) guides are simply fantastic and Sony users rave... His books are good reads too (tho surely not quite as good as your book... :) ).
Worth the money for the cable car even though very expensive, thanks for taking us both with you as it didn't cost us a penny🤣🤣. Lovely video guys as usual, take care. Your photos are always stunning..see you both soon
Absolutely intrigued with your vids.. here in Fredericton, I sincerely look forward to seeing your newest video!! Keep up the spectacular work you two create!! 👍👍💕💕
I really enjoy being out in the woods and at the coast. And I also really enjoy taking fotos. So I take fotos at exactly those places and can never be disappointed, if in some days there are no images to be had.
Looks like the Sanidump is yours again, Gavin! Oooops! Can't wait to see the fall colours in those valleys. What will you do without a fix of spectacular mountain scenery, though? Eeeek! Nice video :)
Gavin, good video. I live in the midwestern part of the USA (Ohio area). One thing I’ve learned about our landscape is to not overlook the intimate landscapes. We do not have the grand vistas of the West but our landscapes are just as beautiful when we look more closely. The streams, the trees, the moss covered rocks, etc. I’m looking forward to your journey in learning and loving the landscape in your new home.
Hi Gavin, I found the Mark Smith's A1 setup guide very good. He shoots wildlife. I think programing your camera to his settings wouldn't disrupt your landscape workflow. He has a handful of recommendations that are game changing. Cheers!
I love my A1 over all cameras I've used before. If you want to master it, get the "Friedman Archives Guide to Sony's A1" and every of your questions will find an answer! Unfortunately there were not many usefull informations on RUclips 😟.
Nice…loved the shots and agree better with the cloned tree line. Not sure you was properly prepped though as didn’t see the bear repellent! 😮 oh and could you clarify if the swiz plate is include on the Sony…though thanks for not picking my name…Sony shite😂
As a Canon person with a similar menu system in all of their lineup, everytime I've used my friends Sony, I was confused going through the menu as it seemed over complicated.. but I'm sure using it for years, you get used to it. And PLEASE tell me you'll come back here during the autumn colors!
Hoping that Fiona didn't strip too much of the foliage from those trees or autumn in Cape Breton might be a wash this year. We got away relatively unscathed on the South Shore. Cheers Gavin!
Thanks for this Gavin. I had a fantastic holiday on Cape Breton Island a few years back, before I got into photography and I just wish that I had taken more than a few "holiday snaps" to remind me of it. You and Amanda really have chosen one of the most beautiful places in the world to live.
Ah Gavin, I so love your humour. You are an accomplished photographer but there are many people with similar skills. However, you are someone who blends expert photography with entertaining dialog and that's very unique. Keep up the good work! Hi to Amanda too. She's a very special straight man!
Been watching you videos now for a bit over a month, and although I've been doing landscapes for over 12 years, I've learnt so much in that very short period of time. There is two things that I wish I could have. A couple of photo buddies, and a partner like Amanda, as I'm on my own 99% of the time, so it takes some effort to get out there. From Eastern Victoria. Australia.
Top Tip! If you want to save your knees, take the access road back down, instead of the trail :D Your more likely to see moose that way to :) Its been a few years but they used to have a hut at the top with 4 beds, you could sleep on to be up there for sunrise! I use the term beds loosely, just plywood bunk beds lol
Re. Bears. I saw a video on safety by a hiker in New York State. One point he made was that lone male black bears are the most dangerous and kill more people than any other animal in the US. Not so much the mother protecting cubs one might imagine, but males as they can be predatory. Again he mentioned an episode where one followed him and wouldn’t be scared off - similar to a video on IG just last week of one following a group and refusing to stop despite shouts etc until rocks were thrown. The guy in the safety video recommended a good metal whistle as well as bear spray or an air horn! Might be an idea to add such? As well as his and hers sprays as a back up?
Gavin - I was up Franey last year - the week after Thanksgiving. The colour was spectacular. Wait till you see it! Only a couple of weeks away now. Hope you're well and didn't have any serious damage with Hurricane Fiona last weekend? Cheers.
Gavin always love your videos. You asked about the a1 settings. There is a Australian chap who is a Sony imaging ambassador who post videos and reviews about Sony cameras. His name is Mark Galer. You should check his stuff out. I got some presets from him when I got mine.
Beautiful shot, I can imagine how nice it would be with Fall color. Very funny video, as usual, with shameless product placement :). If you need help operating the Sony A1, I recommend talking to either Blake Rudis or Matt Klowskoski - who are master teachers and own the A1.
Check out Mark Galer's channel, he's a Sony ambassador and has the best tutorials on Sony systems I've found. Definitely shortened my learning curve on the A7 R4.
In one of Grumpy's newer videos he found a piece of turd on the beach. I mentioned it was Gavin's in the comments. But the Neil Young Spotify stab was gold lol.

Yikes, that Sony a1 is a pricey bestie! I can can commiserate with you about getting a new canera that has twice as many new features and a new control layout. I just got the Canon R7 and have been fumbling my way through its operation for more than 2 weeks. The skyline is pretty killer in the autumn. It's a hike but you may even see a moose along the way. There was a mom and calf the last time I was there
