To become an Air Traffic Controller can take up to 5 years. To upgrade to a TRACON Controller takes up to 8 years. Eight years ago it was 2015. So to overcome the TRACON Controller shortfall, recruitment and training needed to occur in 2015. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think Pete Butigege was Secretary for transport back then. What was done in the years between 2015 to 2023 to overcome this shortfall ? Who was the Transport Secretary then ? When you inherit a manpower problem, you handle it on a day to day basis as best you can, while implementing plans to overcome it over an appropriate time frame. When it takes 8 years to train a controller to TRACON standard, you cannot fix the problem overnight. A pathetic case all round of Mr William’s making a speech consisting of inaccuracies and cheap shots and trying to disguise it by asking questions that he wasn’t interested in hearing the answers to. The fact that the government allowed that to happen is completely absurd.

This culture of combativeness by GOP politicians, it's not really adult like and it's not impressive and it doesn't have to be this way. I was brought up in the GOP and I remember what civility used to be. Trump couldn't be bothered because of rain to visit the graves of veterans in France who gave their lives for freedom while Biden recently met the 3 unfortunate individuals who lost their lives upon being returned to the United States. This is today's GOP. I have not had one sleepless night after leaving it.

I think it's pathetic for Forbes to post incendiary headlines like that. It looks like Williams should've done his homework not the transportation secretary. It takes years to train ATC personnel, it's not a problem that originated during secretary's tenure and Williams was seeking to destroy his reputation rather than gain insight into the issues plaguing this country in terms of transportation.

Paying most of your staff overtime costs more than hiring a full staff, where does that money come from and where does it go?
