Spotting the problem is a direct result of you spending so much time with Woody. You know eack other inside out. Good things come to good people and I'm confident all will be well come next season.

Fate is certainly treating you and your team harshly this season pal, i hope Woody will make a full recovery. Concerning the lost deck feather, my girl lost 1 in the 22/23 season and she grew a new 1 during the moult then dropped it again and grew another one so she grew 13 tail feathers that moult which was odd but she's fine since. Predators are quite hardy so i think he has a good chance of recovering. Hope your good as well mate, don't they cause us worry though. Thoughts are with you pal

That's interesting to read, actually Woody has always moult 13 which is strange 12 then drop one new one and regrows it.
I'm fine thanks have a great weekend.

I got just as worried as you were right here! The 4 feathers that broke off definitely weren't molted feathers, as they still needed more time to molt. As you were checking out his feathers as 12:49, you could added the F-10 solution as he was eating with him mantling, but I believe time was of the essence here. Not only that, but you weren't sure what else could have been wrong with Woody, so that's why you laid him down with the hood on. That way you could check him out fully. I'm glad he gets to spend some time in your house when it gets cold. Now, you'll be there with Woody even MORE often! I want to see that.
I recall you saying that it only takes a few days of not manning Woody for him to become feral. Then it's nearly impossible to train him to revert back again. I already know that it is NOT food that builds trust with a bird of prey, it is hunger that does!
I want to share a story. A few days ago, I was driving home from work and I stopped at a field across the street where I normally fed a hawk named Bella. Her mate was on the fence across the street. I decided not to stop driving when I looked out my passenger view window. I made a U-turn and right before I made the U-turn I whipped out my thermos and pulled a raw chicken leg out. After I made the turn, I rolled down my window, threw the chicken out the window, and made a very quick whistle. The hawk swooped so fast on that thing and flew across the field near a fence. I then continued to drive, made the U-turn a 2nd time and parked near the fence. The hawk was about a quarter mile away. As I was reaching over to grab my camera to film him, the hawk saw my movement and flew nearly straight up and over the fence with my chicken leg and went into the forest. That proves how shy a wild hawk can get at fat weight. He probably wasn't even hungry, he was just looking for something to give to his mate that was incubating in the nest. It was in the 80s that day, it was pretty warm. And I hasn't seen him since and I tried making calls for him to come back. He will not come back! I'm pretty sure he will be hunting somewhere else if his mate wants something. I've gone through all this last year so I know.

My Redtailed Hawk had a similar issue many years ago. He had actually bitten through the quil himself. Turned out that he had a folical infection. Rested him for the rest of the season and all went well after his moult. Hope all goes well with your Harris's Hawk.

I don't have knowledge of hawks im just a big woody fan.
My female grey lost all the flights on 1 side but not completely the shafts were still in when we had that earthquake years ago in the early hours.
I padded everywhere underneath her in case she dropped on her keel because her balance was affected and just waited for a moult to push the shafts out as normal.
    This time it didnt.
I went to see an avian vet to ask about imping.
She suggested she removed the shafts under anesthetic which I know has a lot of risks but because of the balance issue with her I had it done.
    Her flights grew back in.
I don't know how hawks moult and hopefully Woody will be fine 🤞
He's so loved and well looked after he's beautiful.
1 of the males I had did have a folicle infection as well.
It's so interesting watching other birds on here to learn.
The way you both could handle Woody was brilliant.
My parrots would have had my fingers off 😁
I hope everything goes as it should with his moult 😊

Think you for sharing your story about the situation you had.
That must of been scary and a worry having a vet remove the tips.

Yes I think that is possible although I'm still wondering if it could be wingtip Odeama, some have suggested it may be.

Oh! I was so worried when I saw half the title of this video and unable to open it as was in company.
Now watched it and relieved to see that all should be fine given time. Good to note you have Woody indoors at night for now and the reason why, thank you for that. Another good reason to take him in for now would be to take away the temptation for the fox. Do you by any chance have a wildlife camera to monitor the mews? I had been wondering about the deck feather but thought it might be too early to see if it is going to regrow.
Love and healing sent to you and Woody.

    • @freebirdofreason1994
      @freebirdofreason1994  8 месяцев назад

I haven't got a wild life camera but I could get one. I am starting to think it could be wingtip Odeama I'm treating for that also ,the same treatment really.
It's a worry but hopefully it will heal.
Thank you for your support 🙏.

@@freebirdofreason1994 that's really sad if it's wingtip odeama. I know you feed woody extremely well but do you give him vitamin supplements as well? Would wingtip odeama cause the wings feathers to break off? As a beginner falconer I ask because I don't know. X

Oh boy, a scary situation, to say the least. The damaged area might've been bothering him and he pulled the feathers out himself, trying to relieve the pain. Sort of like a person pulling an infected tooth. Good luck with him, Pete!
