HARRIS HAWK WOODY, WEIGHT AND MANNING DURING HIS MOULT

It is probably best to leave a hawk to moult out in their mews. I can get Woody out only because we work daily at this relationship, he probably would be just as happy to be left and retrained after the moult. I’m trying to keep him manned to the end of the moult and fly him seven days a week hunting at higher weights. Here is Woody and his mind at a fat weight. Shop link. ruclips.net/user/redi...

    Do you ever worry about neighbour's cats while he is out in the yard ? or they dont want any heat from the hawk?

As the hunt goes on he will start to follow better then a tip bit off the glove. If he doesn't catch his food rabbit or something then he gets his last part of his food on the glove and we go home. I catch them up after the moult and weigh them. I then put them back and cut their food until they feed on the fist . As soon as they do feed I start walking them in fields and let them feed if they want. If they don’t feed I will continue to cut the food just a little bit more each day until they feed comfortably. I then start them on the creance until they are coming 30-40 yards pretty much instantly. Of course every bird is different so I just tweak it slightly. Hoping to get her out on the creance soon! Like you said we don’t call her to the fist from her bow perch, instead we use a high T perch when starting out with the creance in the garden. I'm in the process of building and getting everything I need for my FHH, I'm so excited. I'll be lucky enough to be able to hunt most days in the season because I'll be doing pest control and the winter hours are based around hunting! Hoods are the most misunderstood part of a falconer's toolkit. I feel like I have a unique perspective on them because I have autism/ADHD and I get overstimulated by sound, I understand how your senses can completely overwhelm you. Their eyes are so much more powerful than our own that the hood is a kindness in some situations.

    • @freebirdofreason1994
      @freebirdofreason1994 16 дней назад

      Depends, if you have your hawk out of moult now I mean you are getting the hawk out and weathering, start training, weighing , if you have dropped some weight off I’d try jumping short distances every feed in creance area, you will see what’s needed. If you mean you have dropped some weight whilst in the mews and you see some keenness then get the hawk out and start training. Flying weight is what you reach you need to creance to that , but at fat weight it’s not going to happen. So some weight off and start to see what happens. Don’t spend to long on creance if you bring the weight down a bit first . If that’s what you mean, I hope that helps.

    Willow' recall is excellent. I am thinking of a GWH Pointer as a hunting companion for my Female Harris and I. Can you let me know the Pros and Cons of the breed Pete. I tried an English Setter but it was way to fast to hunt with so I let him go to a Gunman. I find a lot of Gundogs now are bred from trialing stock and work very fast. At 67yrs of age I would like a a nice slowish Dog as part of our team, mind you a few people have recommended the German wirehaired pointer to me.

      I have always liked the GWP dogs, pro is usually steady can work close, very loyal and a fantastic family dog. Lovely steady pointer, learn well , but strong willed so need to be firm and they will enjoy pleasing you. Love children and get on with most dogs. Cons, need a lot of exercise that oks if retired and can get them out. They will get bored easily and look for things to do in the house if left alone, destroying stuff, possibly If exercised first then can be left alone for short periods . Or crate them if not in a kennel. That said, they will settle and lay about after a walk and a hunt. I recommend them lovely breed, I’m 63 now and happy that we have this breed.

    Hi, just working my way through your vids (and subbed). I have for many many years wanted to get into falconry and due to working full time have put on th back burner, but recently decided to g for it,like your style of down to earth vids.there are some really good channels on here , been watching Dave Sharps stuff too. When you converted you shec to a mews what size was it? Was thinking of doing the same .....I'm a long way yet from getting g a hawk , a lot to read up on , do and kit to acquire first . All the best to you and woody, nice to see the love you have for it.

    Back in 1975, I had a eyas tiercel goshawk that wouldn't bathe or drink, in his bath pan. I just threw some meat in the water and he immediately jumped in. It worked, he started to take baths regularly.👍

      @@freebirdofreason1994 Another thing we used to do, is put a sprinkler next to the bath pan, so the water disturbs the bathwater. (like rain) Sometimes that entices them to jump in.
