How good was Deco actually? #GOAT
New episode of a documentary series where I plan to present all the greatest players of all time and then give them a score so a ranking of the best players can be created. In this episode we take on Deco who played for Barcelona, Porto and Chelsea for most of his career, not only one of the greatest playmakers of all time but one of the greatest players of all time. See how Deco ranks and just how good he actually was.

I've been at Estadio do Dragão once. The Porto's tour mesures how Deco is respected there. When he came to Brazil to play for Fluminense he was strugling against the injuries, but he helped us a lot in two Brazilian league titles, mostly in 2012, when he played as the old Deco.
Fluminense fans loves Deco. Besides his beautiful game, he was a true winner. Two of our four Brazilian league titles has been won with Deco's help.

That Porto team was something else. They'd rather win pretty, but they'd win ugly just as well. They were never out of the game. Deco in those years was unstoppable.

Juan Pablo Aimar was an underrated genius, he was so good, everyone I knew growing up wanted to play like him. I never quite understood why he never made it at the top. Same thing goes for Hatem Ben Arfa.
Aimar in valencia reached champions league finals twice in a row. He was amazing,really amazing...but the injuries destroyed him...
Being a Benfica supporter I gotta say, Deco in Porto was unplayable, such a classy player with great vision, and amazing ball control and I’ll never understand how Benfica didn’t see his potential. A very underrated player as he was also very involved defensively.
Deco was a great midfielder of the youth teams of Corinthians that Benfica did not take advantage of, it seems that history is repeating itself, the same can happen with Pedrinho.
So sad to see benfica a great European past, seem to remain in a long deep sleep!

It's was the Vietnam times back there... Specially for Souness he went to Benfica not to train but to make money transferring players like Minto/Dean and...Michel Thomas. It's was hard for a player that had not yet played for Benfica, that was playing in Alverca to return and play in those conditions. It was one of the thousand mistakes Benfica had made in that time, like sacking Mourinho like they did.
In his first game with the Portuguese national team he scored aganist... Brasil!
Deco was an absolute genius, one of the best midfielders I have ever seen live. His first touch magical, and he could do everything with the ball. Maybe lacked the physique and speed to be considered a top midfielder of his time, but he played in a golden age(Zidane, Figo, Beckham, Scholes, Viera and Co.)

Deco was a masterclass player. Magic, simplicity, great ball control, fantastic dribbler.
Growing up he was the player I looked up to, he played in Portugal a lot of time before Porto and, despite being a Sporting CP fan my whole life, I just couldn't resist admiring Deco.
The subtlety he did everything, absolute class. He made it look like everyone else played checkers while he was playing chess.
Only regret I have is, unfortunately, he did not win any major title with Portugal. We know as Portuguese how much the 2004 final still hurts, great team, beautiful atmosphere in the country and a whole golden generation of players that made a path for these youngsters now.
My honest homage to Deco, one of the greatest that ever graced the field.

One of the best players I have had the pleasure to watch playing for Fluminense. Brazilian Champion in 2010 and 2012.
Deco was magical especially in major tournaments who could do magic tricks with a football and a true players player from Porto. He truly left a mark in the Premier League with Chelsea after being immortalized in Spain and Portugal as the best in Europe.

One of the best central midfielders no doubt. Won everywhere he played and was close with Portugal too, he did his job a bit quietly while in Barcelona due to Ronaldinho being the showman but Deco was always very technical, very reliable.

Great player, and I really loved watching him. His peak didn't last very long and he was inconsistent and struggled with injuries, but between 2003-2006 in particular he was absolutely brilliant to watch...technical, dynamic, creative, had a great shot from distance, and was a wonderful passer and playmaker. I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I still think he arguably deserved the Ballon d'Or in 2004 for what he did both with Porto and Portugal (I know that there were others who were deserving as well, so I'm not saying they also didn't deserve it...I feel somewhat about Sheva winning it though).

I’m Portuguese was born in Azores Terceira moved to Lisbon at 6 years old then at 10 years old my parents had split my mom’s whole side of the family was in Toronto Canada ever since but don’t get it twisted I’m very very proud to be Portuguese and take every chance I get to let me know I’m from Portugal over here in Toronto there’s a pretty dam big Portuguese community every match we win in World Cup or euro cup we party like we won the tournament and they literally have to close three main roads bc it’s chaos the streets get filled with Portuguese people and flags it’s impossible for cars to drive through so they have to close the roads it’s a beautiful site I remember when we won the euro cup in 2016 like it happen an hour ago we partied and partied the whole day and night until morning time I will never ever forget that beautiful day I will also never forget losing to the Greeks in 2004 I was till pretty young it felt like someone put their hand in my chest and ripped my heart out I crie like a little school girl I was crushed that why I had a very very very! Little sympathy for France when we did to them what Greece did to us bc I know exact how they felt but I have to be honest bc I lied I had zero I mean zero sympathy for France haha!

I think people have exaggerated the abilities of Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo. What you have to also consider is that these two players are playing in an era where football is not that good anymore. That is the issue with our new generation. Messi and Ronaldo grew under intense competition and had players like Deco, Ronaldo 09, Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, David Beckham, Ronaldinho, Xavi etc to contest with. All these players were legends and had extra ordinary capabilities. Right now besides Messi and Ronaldo which player can you compare with either Deco or Luis Figo? Non. Which other player is more skilled than Ronaldinho, even with Messi and Ronaldo included? The answer is non.
Since no one is talking saying anything about that, but on his last club, Fluminense FC from Brazil, where he played from 2010-2013, although he suffered from injuries, that did not stop him from playing an important role in some key matches, and even not these injuries stopped him from getting some more trophies while there, where he won the 2010 and 2012 Brazillian League Titles.

Something not known by a lot of people is he had a bit of a drug/alcohol problem and benfica didnt trust him to get back on his feet, porto saw him at salgueiros and decided to get him clean and the rest is history :) my favourite player of all time

How good he was? Let me put it this way... Besides Messi, Maradona, Pele, and the two Ronaldos, if I had to choose a player to my team it would be him... He was an all overall player, and the best midfielder I ever saw. He was also a leader and a team player. He was the crown jewel of 2003/2004 F. C. Porto. He was the main active to lead FCP to win the champions league.
Really, really good. That's how good he was.

He was Great! Simply brilliant. that time showed me the best football I've ever seen.
I even argue that if he would have joined Bayern at that time, he would have won more. He would have been the perfect fit, feeding Makaay, having Ze Roberto on the wing and a young Schweinsteiger running for him. The atmosphere would have been better for him as he would have been the star of the team but he instead chose Barca first and Chelsea later. He was so close to join Bayern that i think that would have been the best destination for him.

Deco played for Portugal, (although he had said before, it made no sense for him) because of Agostinho Oliveira, who was the manager of the national team, before Scolari got the position. At the end of a national's team game in 2002 Agostinho Oliveira said that he would be happy to have Deco in the national team.
As for the advantage of Deco in relation to Rui Costa, was not the age... the base team was Porto's team (everything was already well oiled by Mourinho) and he could defend (a thing Rui Costa couldn't really do well). Deco was a lot more intense in his game than Rui Costa. One can put it this way: Rui Costa was a old school 10, while Deco was a modern 10 (even played some 20 or 30 minutes as a right back for the national team).
