This killed italian football. Best league in the world in the 90s up to 2006.
Hasn't recovered since. The prem & la liga have dominated since. Forza juve.

It was already dying beforehand. Lazio, Fiorentina and Parma all went bankrupt cause they spent money they didn't have. By the time Calciopoli came along the seven sisters were already dead.

What killed the league was fraud, it lived by fraudulent money unfortunately. Calciopoli, Parmalat, Cirio, Fiorentinas owners fraud killed it. Half of the league had no money, and then it was shown that the competition itself was a fraud, as it was fixed. It will never stop being funny how for a Juventus fan the biggest problem is still not that they cheated their way to success, but that they were caught. Have you no shame?
Good thing Serie A has made a comeback in the recent years, but it will never beat PL because the money gap is just ridiculous.

This came as a surprise to absolutely nobody in Europe.
Italian football has been perpetually corrupt. Every major side in Europe has a story about strange goings on in the European cup against italian sides.
How italian teams weren't blanket banned from the champions league is beyond me. It no doubt involved a deal and a briefcase of cash.

In the end it turned out that investigators had 200 000 phone calls of basically all Serie A clubs lobbying for best referees and for special treatments, but for some reason they decided set the filter only on Moggi. Inter, which initally investigators said there were no calls at all, were found to have spoken even to referees directly. The italian football federation prosecutor found Inter had committed sports fraud but were saved by limitation period.

accuse Inter as you want, but everyone knew in Italy, juventus are referee's golden boys. Even after they get back in serie A, referee are always bias towards juventus, maybe Inter and milan got their share also, but juventus are the biggest scam of them all. Now, they even make fraud reports about their finance and transfer. What a rat club.

I bet if Juve won the Championship League against Borrusia this would take a different route.
I love Juventus, loved a lot of their players in those times but of course no suprise as far as the fixing and steeling goes so forza Italy for going through that .. but never will be convinced in a bigger picture saying, that Juve was the only Pedro - and that would cost Italian league, society dearly ..
But all of Europe, more or less ( apologies, trying to avoid this as some kind of collective guilt ) I hope will keep on fighting for a better society rather than just shatter into "gazillion" little fractions over politics , of course.
Same wishes to all around the globe.
That's boring, pathetic, naive to hear maybe but do apologize to , hm, "human nature" for this wish .. What's the alternative if not at least dialogue ? Only can "human nature" strive toward and that's enough said.
    Bye

Again with the "ref locked in the dressing room" myth?! It's been disproven by the ref himself years later and there's even a court verdict about it!
Also, there's wiretapped material involving plenty of other clubs, INCLUDING Inter (who reaped the rewards of the Calciopoli scandal). But the focus was all on Moggi and Juventus, as they were Public Enemy #1 in Italian football.
The goal of the investigation wasn't making Calcio clean again, it was just petty revenge to appease the non-Juventus fans and basically taking out someone who had become too influential within the accepted structure of corruption.

Probably the most famous call, that was swept under the rug and surprisingly only reappeared after the the Limitation Period. (2011)
Call between G. Facchetti (Inter) and P. Bergamo (Referee designator)
Facchetti: «Look, I saw Bertini's (Referee) scorecard that he has with us: 4 wins, 4 draws and 4 defeats...»
Bergamo: «Holy shit, then let's do 5,4,4. But victories"
Facchetti: «But tell him it's crucial, tomorrow. He did 12 games, 4-4-4"
Bergamo: «One has to move, but the one that begins with W. Yes, I 'll talk to him. Don't worry, he understood how to walk: he's a smart boy, he understood. Better late than never. @@Micfri300
