I picked up the earlier S90 for £16 - they are really well put together and still take impressive shots. Great for street photography as they're so discreet.
Had my fill of DSLR's a while back and now use a mint S100 that came used with original box etc. Had a screen protector from day one and for the princely sum of £40. It now has competition though in the form of a MK1 RX100 that also came with original box etc. Love the higher end compacts and opt for them over my smartphone every time.
Great review of a awesome camera! I have the S95 and bought it when it came out in 2010 and I still love it and carry it with me. I never understood why it never received the recognition it deserves. It's a awesome camera still today!
Thanks! I remember these were considered pretty sexy back in the day among photographers, but they probably didn't sell as well as the (cheaper) compacts. The fact that yours is still working great is a testament to the build quality :)
These old cameras were amazing in good lioght and produced very rich colours. And yes the S95 and the G11 was even better in this discpline. Maybe i get myself a g12 just to have fun again.
I got one of these off of ebay. I really like it. It takes pretty good pictures. After watching some tutorials about RawTherapee, I've gotten some great pictures. I'm a total RAW format convert now. I've tried some astro-photography with it (only @24mm, f2.0) and got pretty decent results with RAW. The automatic dark frame correction works pretty well. Lensvana was right about the high ISO noise and the dust shutter getting stuck.
I have the S200 and it was really good, but it got a weak on and off button that I have it repaired with Canon, after it was repaired, it broke again, to turn it on, I press any button, and to turn it off I usually open the battery compartment. Its a very good camera, with fast lens and high quality pics.
@@lensvana yes, completely agree. Photo cameras beat all phones regarding ergonomics. Did just comparison between S95 ans Galaxy S21. There is a lot of sharpening/AI of the phone.
I have this little guy somewhere in my house. The main issue I always had with it was the battery power. I got an extra one but the camera never lasted more than half the day of that. The problem is the huge screen on the back, that thing sucks it dry.
Very true, Deirdre. Battery life remains an issue with these smaller cameras (even the most recent ones). Over time I learned to obsessively turn off the camera after every series of shots to save battery life. Dimming the LCD screen is probably the best thing one can do, although that's not really an option when you're outside and need to turn up the brightness
And there is CHDK available for these compacts, a custom firmware that unlocks features that were not available on these cameras due to firmware locks by Canon.
I actually went for the s95 for the ccd sensor. starting with the s100 canon moved to cmos sensors. i never tried the s100, and ken rockwell says the picture quality between the two are the same, but i prefer ccd for the better look noise has at high iso. all these cameras will go up in price like film cameras have
Nice! Yep many people prefer that CCD look, I certainly enjoy it from time to time. I'm seeing prices go up for all cameras in general (vs. pre-pandemic). We'll see if that trend continues...
I am on my 5th powershot, so I was waiting on canon to release the g9x mk3 but canon simply does not care about its point and shoot market. so I upgraded to the GR. The powershot cameras are slow in almost everyway unless the light is good. when the light is good you will get some good pictures but with very little room to play around because of the limited mega pixels.
Can't disagree on that one! The RX100 is another contender (even usable at ISO 3200 in a pinch) but ultimately I found it a bit too fiddly and preferred the GR in the end
I'm looking to buy something used for recording a short film, other then using my phone could one of these work.I will be shooting in the woods and nature any help would be great
For short films I think your phone would be a better choice as long as it shoots 1080p video, save the rest for lighting or audio (much more important!)
good video , One question, how do you connect the camera, see what the lens sees on television, I can only see what is on my memory card. I connect my camera through the hdmi cable.
Try selecting your operating system here and see what's available to download from Canon's official website for the S100: en.canon-cna.com/support/consumer/products/cameras/powershot/s-series/powershot-s100.html?type=software&os=macOS%2010.14%20(Mojave)
Ok so. The s95 is actually the better camera for stills. Big reason is the 28 vs 24mm lens. F2 is just to much light for these small 1/1.7 size sensors. The s95 is also smaller. I had the s110 and the s95 pics were alot better. Just my opinion
I still use a canon ELPH 190is camera. In my opinion it takes better pictures then a smart phone. Since I can only use one hand, phones with a touch screen are hard to handle. If my camera breaks I would buy another camera. I would spend the money and get a good quality camera not a second hand one.
Check prices on eBay: ebay.us/g6wNsq (AFFILIATE LINK) Important: please don't confuse this camera with the much older Powershot S100 Digital Elph / Ixy Digital (2 megapixels)!
I just got this camera for to document a trip, and I was wondering, was there a problem with this camera that you may have since posting this vid? I know that historically, the Powershot S100 has had problems with its lens.
No problems here, Josh. I know the S series sometimes has a problem with the lens cover mechanism dying eventually (not the lens itself), but mine is fine!
All these beautiful manual settings wasted on a picture...just think if they were available on the video side? 24fps but can't manually set for 180 rule shutter, can't manually focus, aperture, or white balance so when you pan or move it keeps changing which gives the amuteur looks...I understand it's point and shoot but it has the all those controls for a picture on a camera that the end user us all auto! If these functions were available on the video side they would sell the crap out of these still to this day sep 2021
Yea it's too bad really, I think back then they had no idea how important video functionality would become on digital cameras. Video was tacked on as an afterthought
This was exactly what I was looking for. I’ve been trying to find a tiny camera that shots raw with f2 at least 👍
I picked up the earlier S90 for £16 - they are really well put together and still take impressive shots. Great for street photography as they're so discreet.
16 pound... nice find Andrew! Agreed.
Yes, absolutely, i have s 90,great good shots in night shots also, now i have s 120,again impressed with picture quality 🤔🙂🙂

Thanks! My SD1100IS is getting old (8MP) and I need something $100-ish to replace it.
Dang! Different battery and charger !
Perfect camera for street photography. Thanks to your video I will grab my one out of the drawer! 😀
Do it!! Still more fun than using a phone for photography :)
(just my opinion)

Oh my gawwwww. Thank you so much for this video! I will look at sony's previous or old cameras. I am blessed to seeing this!
Great review. I just bought the S100. Tired of carrying my heavy Nikons all the time.
I know the feeling - enjoy the S100!
I still have S120 and honestly to say it's best camera pocket for stunning photos
Pls where can I get it ? How much it costs
Bought it when it came out, still use it, awesome camera, had to replace the lens unit a few years ago.
Did you have to replace the lens because of the lens error?
@@ferrucciooo yes

Thank you for this insight. What the would you recommend as a more recent powershot s series . great day to you!
If you have the budget I would go for a Sony RX100 actually! Otherwise the S100/S110/S120 used are budget choices
@@lensvana much appreciated

Thanks Luis. I haven't tried this myself. It's possible that certain TVs will be limited in how they interact with the camera

How about this one vs coolpix p330?
Sorry, no experience with that one

Thanks for commenting. I agree Canon nailed it with the S95, I remember how popular it was back in the day... seems prices are creeping back up again.
@@lensvana yep, i bought 3 of them a few months ago. I gave one to another youtube guy. Terrestrial photo or somethin like that. He reviewed it
Still have mine since I purchased it. Better than my Iphone 11.
Have the S90,great images, and attached a special cumstomized grip.
Grip is definitely a good idea for this series of cameras, if there's no grip I make sure I have a wrist strap around my hand just in case
can i use this for vlogging and starting a youtube???
I think any smartphone from the last 6 years would be better for that!

can u shoot manual with this camera? thanks
yep you can!
Love mine... kept it all this time.
Will try to use it as a nice webcam...
Now that's a creative use for the S100! :)
How long do you think the battery lasts when filming the whole time
Not long, 10 minutes
can you teach how to do a time lapse?
So many great tutorials already out on RUclips on time lapses, long exposure, panning, etc. I wouldn't be able to do a better one!

Yea this sudden compact camera hype is wild!
Liked it from Pakistan
Yes, I'm a lost time traveler.
Let me know if you have plans to go back to 2011, I'm tagging along

I see these still going for over £100 on ebay .
I sometimes see a big gap between eBay and local classifieds prices - maybe cheaper locally?
Not under 100
