    Possibly a silly question, but how can you set the camera for f. 8 when the maximum aperture on the lens is 5.6?

    • @lensvana
      @lensvana 7 дней назад

      So if the maximum aperture is F5.6 it means you can close the lens down past F5.6, i.e. F6.3, F7.1, F8... all the way to (usually) F16 or F22. But you won't be able to open it up wider than F5.6, i.e. F4, F2.8, etc. Hope that helps !

    D200 is still good enough even for serious photography by amateurs or pros for personal work. We really do not need 100MP sensors and shooting capability in pitch dark. I had mine from new and when it was first introduced back in 2005. It had a long waiting list and a hefty price. Mine was the first batch which was made in Japan. The second one which I still have was made in Thailand, but it feels exactly the same. A lot of nonsense has been talked about this and that in the D200. None of it makes sense.I also had a D300, D800, D810 etc etc. I kept the D200 and the D810 along with my very old D70 which should tell you something. Suffice to know that back in the day, quite a lot of pro photographers used the D200 as a 2nd body along their very expensive D2X and some including myself preferred the D200. Photography and the skill of photography are not exactly definmed by high iso performance, numbe rof focus points, human nasal hair focus mode and all that irrelvant. No sooner the talk about the image quaity of a particular camera is discussed, all the usuall aficionados start repeating technical details!!!! BTW, some of the best landscape photography that I have seen in recent years were 30 inch prints shot with a Nikon D700 and a couple of primes. A 12 MP camera of 2007 vintage without any modern ' technical qualities '.

    I am more into converting manual primes these days, but I’ve just bought this zoom for £150 UK (with six month warranty.) I owned it years ago and upgraded to the 24-120VR f4. I thought the more expensive 24-120 would be even better optical quality, but I found that (apart from the extra focal length) it didn’t seem any better. For studio shoots I generally shoot at f6.3, f7.1, or f8, so this lens is fine for that. I recently bought a cheap used Z5 body, so this 24-85 will convert with the FTZ adapter and give auto focus.

    • @lensvana
      @lensvana 11 дней назад

      Nice pickup for 150 pound, especially with the warranty! If you ever get the chance, see if you can try the 24-70 F4 Z, it may surprise you wide open. Although at around f/7.1 in the studio, that 24-85 will do just fine :)

      @@lensvana Great lens the Z24-70 f4 , but when I had it last year I thought the focusing on my Z6 was a little unreliable unless the ambient light was really good. I got a bit disillusioned with the affordable Nikon mirrorless stuff at the time and sold the Z6 & Z24-70. Recently I saw a nice used Z5 at £640 U.K. and decided "What the hell....I might as well get that to shoot vintage lenses on. The D300 also has significantly better high ISO performance and can be found in the same price range with a low shutter count on MPB. The AA filter is also a lot less aggressive. With a constant f2.8 lens, it is capable of night photography. Regarding SOOC JPEGs, Nikon released optional picture controls for the D300 to emulate the three D1X color modes, which are still available online, so there's room for customization as well.

    • @dct124
      @dct124 4 дня назад

      It doesn't. I've owned both. The D300 does a worse job at high ISO than the D200 and doesn't have ISO 100. You should recommend the D300s which actually corrected the high ISO problem of the D300 and also added video. *The D300 at high ISO turns your images to mush. You can't turn off NR passed ISO 800. From ISO 1600-6400 your images turn into a soft mush. The D200 maintains more detail even when NR is turned on High. With today's NR software, the D200 cleans up ISO 1600 and 3200 like ISO 100 whether you're shooting jpeg or raw (3200 has a color shift) For all 3, shoot at ISO 1600 underexpose by 1 or 2 stops to get ISO 3200 or ISO 6400 in post for jpeg and raw. That definitely goes for both the D200 and D300. The D300s is fine up to ISO 3200. Where the D300 shines is at ISO 200 which outperforms the D200 at ISO 100 and Lo-1 (ISO 100). Lastly, the D200 Jpegs are better than both the D300/D300s/D500 and arguably everything up to the Z7. No idea why, but the D200 jpegs don't break as easily as all other Nikon CMOS or BSI-CMOS bodies (in Lightroom).

    • @lensvana
      @lensvana 21 день назад

      Sorry to hear about your VII. They crammed so much tech into these tiny cameras - somewhere along the line, compromises must have been made regarding build quality. They always felt fragile in the hand, but the image quality is excellent.

  • @justsomeguy2001
    @justsomeguy2001 22 дня назад

    Wow. How do you get your images to be so saturated and vibrant? I love it! Is it the CCD sensor or editing or both? The main reason I always shoot film and not digital is because I always find my digital photos are bland and grey in colour, but film is getting too expensive to shoot every photo on, so I'm thinking of picking up a new or used digital camera. Love how bright and colourful the images are! Will be on the look-out for one of these! Cheers from Ireland!

    • @lensvana
      @lensvana 22 дня назад

      Hey, thanks! One "trick" I use to get good landscape colours is to wake up super early and catch the early morning light - this is the best light for landscapes and really makes the natural colors come out best. 2 hours after sunrise it's all over usually - but you can keep shooting if it's still overcast or foggy. It's counterintuitive, but these are the best conditions for landscape. Also works for sunset, of course - but there's something magical about the early morning. The CCD sensors were a kind of "in between" during the film to digital transition and can be fun to play with for the way they render certain colours, but they are not necessary - it's more about the quality of the light. As someone who still shoots a lot of film, I feel your pain. See if you can pick up a very cheap Nikon D70/D70s or D40/D40x locally with a lens attached to it - it's CCD for the price of 3 rolls of Portra :)

      Thanks for watching! :) At some point I will start making videos about printing, but my setup right now is pretty simple. Printing on a (used) Canon PRO-100 and Canon Pro Lustre paper, straight from Photoshop's built in Print window. The ink is pretty expensive ($120 USD to replace all 8 little cartridges, for an effective cost of around $1.50 per 8.5 x 11 inch print including paper). But it forces me to be more selective and shoot/edit with the print "in mind" - hope that makes sense. Nice deal on those tripods!

    Hi, could you suggest me a good, inexpensive printer, maybe even a used one?

    • @lensvana
      @lensvana 28 дней назад

      Sure! I print on a (used) Canon PRO-100 that I bought for $60. But it's BIG, heavy, and to replace all 8 ink cartridges is $120. Also you have to factor in paper cost. It prints up to 13 x 19 inches. I've heard good things about the Canon G620 / G650 / G550 (the same print quality for all of these models). It only prints up to 8.5 x 11 inches but the quality is good and maybe it could work for you. Definitely see if there's one available used because the new price isn't worth it (in my opinion). Another one to consider is the Canon iP8720 / iP8750 (prints up to 13 x 19"). I immediately went for the PRO series because of widely available ICC profiles for that line of printers. Epson is the other printer brand to consider (really it's just Canon vs. Epson at the consumer level now). Whatever you decide, first check how much it would cost to buy replacement ink! If you only expect to print a few times per year, it might make more sense to send the prints to a local lab (you'll pay something like $5 for 8x10)

    Just got my Sony effective 7.2 megapixel cybershot out a couple of weeks ago. Being beginner level it doesn't take better pictures than my phone but it is more enjoyable especially as the sony has a viewfinder even though it's tiny. You've given me some inspiration to carry on and try and take some better photos.

      Thanks for watching! Yep I have a nice modern phone too, but when I'm using any camera (even the smallest compact) my brain goes into "photography" mode - meanwhile I prefer my phone for quick snaps and casual video like this one

    It's the creativity first, gear second. I started on a dirt cheap thrift store camera and enjoyed it to DEATH. I was no less creative with _it_ than I am now with better gear :)

    You did a great job with the little digicam. I've got and old Canon PowerShot I like to play around with from time to time. It's a lot of fun. Did you edit your shots? What software did you use?

      Thanks! I used Adobe Lightroom Classic for some basic edits, no custom presets or anything - just played with the sliders a little until it matched how I remembered the scene.

    That's actually nice cheap lens with not bad optical quality. ONLY down thing is that it's MADE CHEAP and it feels. If it gets fungus in it - buy another lens, just don't disassemble it! This lens is not made for somebody to take it apart and clean, it's just absurd how such a big company packed optics inside... If you get fungus in between 1st and 2nd elements (bayonet side), you just can't get them apart without ruining a piece of plastic which holds those elements and after you clean them, elements do not stay in place and you need to glue them... It's so stupid... For 40-50$ if it's clean, it's ok to buy. If it starts to show some little spots that could be fungus - don't even consider to buy that, find another.

    I have an iPhone 14 Pro is it worth getting the Sony rx100 V for videos? I'm mostly doing for the vlogging aspect and the flash. If not should I just stay with my phone? Or what compact camera would you recommend?

    • @lensvana
      @lensvana Месяц назад

      The iPhone 14 Pro has really great cameras and I think would work better for vlogging than the RX100 series! I would stay with the phone and invest in better audio for your viewers :)

    Bought a RX 100 va in 2024. I have expensive cameras, but having the RX as a daily carry is turning out to be a lot of fun. It’s low key and offers enough control to create interesting shots. 100% happy with this purchase.

    • @lensvana
      @lensvana Месяц назад

      Well said! The VA would be my #1 choice in the entire RX100 lineup. No one takes you "seriously" on the street with an RX100 and that's one of the biggest benefits

    What bothers me is that many cool third party lenses are no longer produced for Pentax. And the original lenses from Pentax cannot compete with those from Canon and Nikon in terms of numbers.

    • @lensvana
      @lensvana Месяц назад

      Yep, this is definitely a limitation of the Pentax system. There are excellent first party lenses, but nowhere near the total selection in the Canikon world. And Canon/Nikon have a better selection for super telephoto. I think where Pentax excels is landscape/hiking/astro, taking full advantage of the robust build quality and weather sealing

    I bought a used camera a couple of years ago and evaluated the K30 vs K50 vs K70. My result was that the step from K30 to K50 was important, but I could be happy with the K50. It was the interim solution until I could afford the K1 Mark II, but now I am happy to have both.
