    Did you open garage door after first coat to prevent paint from "Bridging" ? Off camera?

    • @Johndiazpainting
      @Johndiazpainting  11 месяцев назад

      Hi John!
      That’s a great question.
      Yes, after I was done shooting the video, I turn off camera and grabbed the garage door, remote control and opened up the door.
      I don’t fully open it, just enough to keep anything from “bridging” which is about 60% open.
      When I’m spraying my first coat, I like to put on a generous amount of material. I’ve found that if I don’t open the door, while the door is drying, ( depending on paint ) there are times where the door has bridged in small places. Another factor is weather, if it’s cold or humid the paint just hangs there a bit longer. Luckily, the weather is generally very nice / warm, so I’m fortunate bridging isn’t something I encounter alot.
      Usually, it’s not an issue.
      Another helpful factor:
      I use a FFLP TIP
      Fine Finish Low Pressure
      3.08 is my preference.
      The FFLP tips reduce over spray by 30% and greatly increase the atomization of your material, so that the combination of a finer finish tip, with a lower pressure creates a superior finish, using less material and pressure.
      I highly recommend FFLP, it’s changed the spraying game.
      Thanks for the question John!
      I hope you’re having a great Thursday!

    What about the stripping that's on the sides? DO you paint that? It's kinda like a seal so the door doesn't have any gaps . My door is blue but those seals are white and my door is in need of some paint. Just don't know if I should paint them. If I should paint them, how do I get under them?

    • @Johndiazpainting
      @Johndiazpainting  9 месяцев назад

      Hi, thanks for the question. Generally, by the time one of our clients needs to paint their door, the weatherstripping is just as beat up as the door is.
      In that case, I will use a spray can of quick dry oil basebased primer, such as cover stain. That would be the last thing I do after I’ve got everything masked off and while I’m setting up my spray pump / paint, the primer dries in weather stripping.
      I only use an oil based spray primer on the rubber flap / weather stripping.
      Another way to do it. If the weatherstripping is in good shape, you can use some duct tape and tape it from behind the weatherstripping and pull it forward so that it exposes the garage door. Generally, nine out of 10 times the weatherstripping is in bad shape, so I clean it and prime it and then I’ll paint the door and after the doors painted, I will take a Brush or a weenie roller, open up the door, and paint the unpainted edges, while the door is up, which will let me access the areas that are covered by the weatherstripping when the door is down.
      I hope that helps.

    how come you didnt take off the weather strips ? i always take them off and roll them so the whole garage door gets the paint coat.

    • @Johndiazpainting
      @Johndiazpainting  9 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Jose.
      We never take the weather stripping off.
      No one I’ve ever known in 30+ years of painting takes the weather stripping off.
      Here’s the details:
      I spray the door after the proper preparation.
      I allow door to dry, apply the second coat of paint, and clean up sprayer while the door is drying.
      After door is dry, I open door completely, and paint the sides with a weenie roller.
      This way the whole door gets painted.
      There is no need to take off weather stripping.
      Thanks for the question.

    What kind of paint is recommended for a metal door?

    • @Johndiazpainting
      @Johndiazpainting  11 месяцев назад

      Hi Bellabaddi!
      Great question!
      I use a water based 100% Acrylic Semi gloss paint.
      I don’t like to use the cheap latex blends, because they don’t last as long.
      If you want it to last, I recommend 100% Acrylic paint.
      The garage door ( in video ) was painted with, Ever Shield From Dunn Edwards Paints.
      ( it’s their top of the line product )
      I also recommend urethane - alkyd paint for metal doors.
      It’s a tougher paint.
      It’s a hybrid of tough, old school oil base paint, with water based cleanup.
      ( excellent paint )
      Lowes or Home Depot will stock comparable paints.
      Most people use a semi gloss or gloss sheen on doors.
      I have painted some doors with a satin sheen which is a step below the semi gloss, as far as gloss levels are concerned.
      Also, for best results, follow the prep in the video and you’re good to go!
      Thanks for the question.
      I hope I helped.

    • @Johndiazpainting
      @Johndiazpainting  11 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Javier!
      That’s a good question.
      Maybe whoever painted it didn’t open the door in between coats or after the last coat?
      There might be areas where the paint touched and stuck together.
      When I was learning about painting back in the late 80’s we used to paint a lot of wooden / French windows.
      After we painted them, we had to move them up and down to make sure they would not stick to window frame.
      When the windows did get stuck, we would use a razor knife to cut in between the areas that stuck together.
      Sometimes it was as easy as wiggling the window, or using a putty knife to loosen the points of contact.
      I would suggest looking for areas where the paint may have bridged.
      I’ve never had that problem with a garage door.
      I use a water based paint that’s designed not to stick to itself.
      I hope this info helps.
      Good luck with your door.
