    That is why I purchased the Pioneer 1000-5. I can use it for work, and use it for tearing up the trails. I love having turf mode for using it in the yard. I also can get my entire family in it without out it being as long as a bus, and they have not complained about being uncomfortable other than the rear seat belt buckles. I swear the turning radius is tighter than my ATV. Still getting used to the DCT since I am used to belt drive.

    My 2 cents worth as an owner of BOTH a Polaris XP 1000 (2014) and Pioneer 1000-5 (2016)
    There is no question that the Polaris has more getup in it! It's a beast of a machine when playing. With that said, I think the Honda having a TRUE locker 4WD system AND the direct drive makes it my preferred choice when I want to go climbing and crawling over rough stuff. I've got 30's on my Polaris and 29's on the Honda. Do I occasionally scrape, sure. That is what I have these machines for! I can carry MUCH more equipment in the Honda than the Polaris provided I don't have any rear passengers. I put a large Contico container in the back and still have lots of room for other items! Could it have more HP? Perhaps, but I haven't been in a situation where I lacked power.
    My biggest complaint is the heat from the engine. I got a letter from Honda saying that they are offering a solution to that at no charge too!
    I have noticed some BS comments here as well. The Honda does NOT have a torque converter. It uses the same style transmission that Honda has used in racing for a number of years, the DCT. This is where 1, 3, 5 share 1 clutch and 2, 4, 6 share the other. The paddle shifters on the steering column make it a lot more sporty too. I can put mine in 4WD locked, 4 Low, and crawl down an extremely steep hill. This is a BIG problem with my Polaris. I have to try to keep RPMs up in order to keep the CVT engaged to slow my descent.
    As I said, I prefer my Honda for adventuring, and steep terrain and the Polaris for getting into the throttle and raising hell.

      best comment ive read. your're absolutely correct on the dct. 1,3,5 works off the front clutch pack while 2,4,6 works off a totally separate rear clutch. only the pioneer 700 has a torque converter since its basically a 680 Rincon powerplant. the 1000 pcm also adapts and learns your driving style and in turn it shifts accordingly. if you stay up in the upper rpm range a lot the pcm will hold the 1000 in gear longer before it shifts or if you drive slow and on flat ground a lot itll shift smooth and in low rpm range. ive been a Honda tech for 17 years and every brand has their downfalls. the 1000 simply creates a lot of heat which is uncomfortable. the cabin comfort kit did help it but I think their response to the problem could've been better. a lot of the utvs create a lot of heat and that's simply due to the fact that in order to meet epa regs the companies are leaning units out. which of course is gonna create more heat. I own a 1000 5 and for the tight wooded trails I ride in the appalachian mountains something like a ranger crew or Viking 6 would be a nightmare to navigate.

    As a Pioneer owner, all I can say is that these vehicles are pretty bulletproof. I don't worry about breaking an axle or shredding a belt. That being said, they are noisy as hell with squeaks everywhere and they lack the comfort of other models out there.

    The best thing about the hondas side by sides is the fact that they don't have Belt style transmission they actually have a Torque converter

    • @marklamb72
      @marklamb72 7 лет назад +9

      Maurice Cooper there is no torque converter on the pioneer 500 or the pioneer 1000 shown in this video the only one that has a torque converter is the pioneer 700.

      Joshua Childers I have a Honda Pioneer 700 and you wouldn't believe the abuse I put that through Just for fun I hooked up my trailer to it and towed my pick up truck around on it in the yard it's gonna take a lot to break it but I agree it would cost more to fix

    • @joshuachilders129
      @joshuachilders129 7 лет назад +2

      Maurice Cooper I'm not doubting it can't take abuse but even the mechanics at the Polaris and Honda dealers are riding Kawasaki Teryxs. They said they'd be more worried about the hondas DCT tranny.

      Craig Simons oh I know what you mean when i was younger my cousins had a Honda atc 110 I believe that had a Honda atc 185 as well . 3 wheelers are a different animal for sure not long after that mom got us a Kawasaki 220 4 wheeler that's were it all started now I own a Kawasaki KFX 400 and a Honda Pioneer 700-4 love it not particularly fast but man it will go anywhere only drawback compared to regular atvs is it's width (this 1000 shown here is even wider) barely fits on my 5x10 trailer and is a little tight on small trails.

    My buddy has the pioneer 700 I loved it so much I got a Yamaha 07 rhino 660 four passenger I paid 5k so I think we both got great bang for the buck the pioneer is bigger and has a tad more power but towing the rhino is much easier due to the 1047 pound weight.

    Yeesh! I just bought a beater Jeep Grand Cherokee that runs great, has no rust, and the AC blows cold for less than $1000. I'd do that 15 times, buy a trailer, and still have enough money for a 14 day Caribbean cruise for 2.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 7 лет назад

      You would be surprised where those damn Jeep Grand Cherokees will go with just regular all terrain tires. My 96 ZJ went wherever I pointed it, placed I should never have gone but it never left me stranded and never got stuck. Plus it took care of the moderate towing duties and 220k miles later when I sold it, its still on the road and the current owner has racked up another 300k on the original drive train...that 4.0L Straight 6 engine was bulletproof...no wonder they quickly dumped that engine in favor of the garbage V6's and that odd 4.7L V8...I'd love to get my hands on a JGC with the 5.9L (360) V8, not many were made, most either had the 4.0L Straight 6, or the 5.2L (318) V8.

    Have a quad and trailer. My wife bought an older jeep tj 5 years ago. Best bday gift ever. 4.0, 3" suspensipn lift 33" mud terrains.rear lunchbox locker, warn winch (old 9500, still works great) $10k, over 5 years ago. Best recovery vehicle ever. Now if 1 of us breaks, Back to camp and bring out the jeep to tow whoever back. This vehicle has turned trail nightmares into good times for all. Its funny too cause we all fight over who's going back to get the jeep. Im starting to think my crew purposely breaks, or not afraid to try something new and end up broken.

    Its a tuff call 21,000. I'm thinking hard about it and my decision is gonna be for the kids and grandkids..Alot of money for a toy.... Way out of their league right now. What made my final decision was I have 3 Honda 4 wheelers Foremans a 91 and a 93. 1... 86 I should retire because the body has seen better days but still runs like a top. Its like an old girlfriend still a special place in my heart for her....lol..... We have taken care of them and they are still in great shape and bullet proof. So 21,000 doesn't seem that bad if we get 30 years out of it and my grandchildren are still running it when I'm dead and gone.

    SXS are expensive to begin with but this pioneer seems like you get even less bang for your buck than most other ones. I picked up a brand new 2018 Teryx 4 LE less than a month ago for 13.5k. And other than making a bit more power this Pioneer doesn’t do anything better. The T4 is more comfortable, especially for rear seat occupants and has real lockers front and rear instead of a rear locker and what is essentially traction control for the front. I’ve also not over heated the thing so far with 3 passengers with cargo while going up steep grades in mid to high 80 degree ambient temps.

    I was looking at honda and kawasaki mule, if you carry 4 people you lose your work bed, my buddy has a Honda pioneer 1000-5 he even bought and extended warranty, he's had clutch problems, wiring problems, they had to replace the whole wiring harness, guess what, honda wouldn't cover it, said it was his fault, I can maybe see his fault on the clutch, maybe not, but the wiring harness, I say b.s. and their warranty ain't worth crap, to bad, I really liked the Honda to, if honda would of covered it, they would of sold another one, but because they didn't, I bought a kawasaki mule ranch pro fxt, I love it, seats 6 and I still have a bed for working.

    anyone who's looking into buying this machine with accessories beware!!!!!!!!! I'm on my second utv, first i bought the 700-4 with the workman accessory kit and it was ok but the utv itself was very slow and loud and the heater didnt put out much heat and it would always steam up in the rain. Once the 1000-5 came out i traded my 700 in for a 1000 hopping all the issues would be rectified but they were worse. all the doors had gaps, the heater was worse, way to much heat in cab from engine in summer so cant take dog with me. steams up worse . all back doors dont work and dont stay lined up with the role cage and were useless plus the back zipper for the main back door dont work when is dusty or dirty which will happen after a few runs, the zipper just splits apart when in use.the front doors are way to heavy and the straps that hold the door keep busting and the passenger door handle is falling off. there isnt enough protection under the machine even if you purchase the metal skid plate they offer. plus more to list but i wont bother........all of these issues happened within a 1000kms. when i called into honda canada with hope that they would rectify the issues all i got from them was "sir we passed your suggestions into the right department and you can expect to see these problems rectified on our new bikes" so basically after spending around 70k they are going to leave you in the black with your bike issues but we will make their new bikes better lol thanks honda ! if anyone is considering this bike please look at the polariz 1000xp they have way more and way better accessories, looks like ill be selling the 1000-5 in the spring

      No ATV/UTV is really that affordable. When prices are far exceeding the prices of a nice 4WD truck or SUV there's a problem. I'd buy a nice used truck before I'd buy an ATV or UTV that doesn't keep you out of the elements...you want a cab that actually works and fits properly you'll need to spend another $5k+ on one of those toys. I'll stick to a truck or SUV that comes from the factory with a cab, heater, air conditioning, wipers, etc.
      ATV's were originally invented for farming/ranching, not toys, the market turned them into toys and the prices have skyrocketed as a result. For the cost of an ATV or UTV you can get a damn nice diesel 4WD truck and have money left over.

    I'm a life long die hard Honda Atv guy. Still am, but after test driving the Pioneer, I'd choose the Polaris. The Honda back seats are awful, and the machine just isn't smooth and refined of a driving experience. I hope Honda makes a real crew and in a few years be ready to eclipse the Polaris crew.

    • @aaronbehindbars
      @aaronbehindbars 7 лет назад

      Marty Wilkinson I'm curious which Polaris you found to be smooth and refined. The Pioneer DCT can definately be jerky, but they do break in and smooth out a bit. Polaris' belt drive will worsen over time. Drive one with a hundred or more hours and see. The Kawasaki Mule Pro series is well worth a look if you don't have to have 70-80 hp. The Pro FXT is a nice tidy size with a comfy back seat and you still have some cargo room, unlike the Pioneer when carrying back seat passengers.

      The Polaris is a 2017 Crew 1000. Both were brand new at the dealer when we test drove them. My father in law bought the Polaris and he/We have been very happy with it. In honesty, the short comings I felt the Honda had, I could live with, but the biggest turn off was the rear seat comfort. We typically have it fully loaded, so the rear bench of the Polaris fit our application better. I'm not saying the Honda is a bad machine at all, but the Polaris shined in our test drives. I'd pick the Honda over the 3 seater Ranger possibly. And I understand Honda made the back seat for versatility and to cut down the overall length, but to me/us, the sacrifice of back seat comfort and space wasn't going to work for us. I'm looking forward to what the future holds in this market.

      Every single person I know that owns a Polaris product over the years have had major problems.
      Every single person I know thats owned Hondas over the years never had major problems.
      I still go over my friend's farm and ride his two Honda 250 4 tracks that still start like the day his dad bought them when we were in first grade. I'm in my mid 40s now
      I can go over to my other buddies place who bought the First Polaris 500 sportsman, it's great when it runs,he had motor, cams, put exterior water pump,etc. Costing $$$ .
      Honda dirt bikes from the 70s was better and more reliable than a Polaris 4 wheeler from 90s.
      My father in law just retired He asked me what should he buy for a side by side. I told him make sure its a Honda and when my kids grow up and one day have kids and then in the late future become Grandpas themselves, they can give their grand kids rides on it.
      He bought a Honda 700 Pioneer with a dump box for around the farm and I now he even been hitting the state trailers.
      POLARIS = money over time
      HONDA = gas and go for year to come.
      I will be picking up the Honda 1000cc crew cab shorty.But thats becouse I plan on keeping it for years.

    Listen too what he says Pioneer owners, this is not a sport machine.
    Too heavy and too wide.
    I have seen Pioneer's get jammed in one gear going down mountains, Hondas Talon comes with a wrence
    so you can manually shift them when stuck in gear.
    Keeping my belt machines after 30,000 mi on 6 belted machines no smoked belts all I ride is mountains, 3500 mi last year.
    New belts on at 4000 mi maintenance.
    If you don't understand belts get a pioneer and a winch your gon a need it.

      You can get a damn good equipped used Jeep for a hell of a lot less. Many will sell their Wranglers when they encounter the notorious death wobble rather than fixing them because it scares the shit out of them when it happens. I'd buy a Jeep Wrangler before I'd buy a damn UTV. Pay all that damn money and you still cannot drive them on the highway...yet they let people on the freeway with those damn "Smart Cars".
