While I thought the wooden Dowel might be a good stick to work with...a soft branch would have been easier and more stable piece of wood to work with, recommended.
Yea the wood dowel was definitely harder to use
It really felt like a clean low effort on prep stick to use, but it peeled and chips and was hard to cut accurate into...kudos to you, yours came out very clean!!!!
@@JoeSteel1 I'm going to try it again with a green stick from a tree. Doing the hole was definitely a scary moment. I thought for sure I was going to crack the dowel with that one
@bigjayroadstar1700 Yeah yeah me too...that it was gonna crack many times...🤪
Don't feel bad about cheating where you can. If you had a chainsaw to build a log cabin, you wouldn't choose a hatchet.
Tools are wonderful!
You did great and tested multiple knives.
Thanks for that, Cap. but I think choosing the wood Dowel was bad for me to start. Next time a soft branch would be much better to manipulate, and shape, the wood Dowel has too much a tendency to chip and Crack, and the wood is too stiff, but in all the knives did well considering
Now that you have them all done you can take your best knife and smooth everything out. I used my toki and absolutely cleaned up every single notch to perfection
Next time I won't use processed wood, but I guess I can still clean them up, thanks for watching D
@@JoeSteel1 you did great. You found out what knives can knotch, now see what you'r best finishing blades are. You have the skills to impress yourself
Brother I truly appreciate you taking on this challenge and taking it seriously. We all love different blades but we all need to build a skill set and promote it great job brother
Cause I 💯 agree with you, being proficient with a skill set, not only can help when needed, it also helps you better understand how good and capable a knife is when used, if not for anything else, more developing ways of demonstrating and testing knives, it's ALL good....Glad I was able to do it...and thanks for the push
this is a great idea to hone your skills
yes absolutely and also to show the comfort and capabilities of a knife
Great job especially for just getting into it! These things are great for working on skills and also seeing how different knives cut. I think you would have an easier time with the notches if you cut a green stick to work with. Dowls are quite hard and will be more difficult to work with.
Yeah, learned that the hard way, dowels are very hard to shape especially without cracking or pealing, you need power tools for clean cuts, but yes clean green branches next time, considering the hard Dowel the Bushcrafter did really well, thanks for watching dude
Nice job, brother! 👍 Cool to see all those responding to Scab’s challenge.
Absolutely, I welcome the experience to extend or add the skill set
You did an amazing job explaining your process Mr.Joe! I should write the notches down like you did! And your absolutely right it's a challenge to make these and specially not breaking the Try Stick in the process for sure! Full disclosure I've used the SAK Wounded Warrior project knife and used the saw a few times as well! There is a lot of notches out there and so many versions of these out there! You killed this Mr.Joe great job bruv! Thanks so much for sharing this one! Much appreciated Jerbs, definitely just have to jump into it...and you will get better hereafter, also gotta use a natural soft branch for better accuracy...was definitely fun.
also best to find a soft straight grain wood
Dan you are the master and you are absolutely right, a softer wood would have been much easier to slice
Hi Joe, great way to practice simple skills personally i only use a few notches i do the same with about a half dozen knots, and with fire methods, take care
Great tip! In the presence of Royalty with you Dan in this genre 😀😀😀
Sup Joe!!! I liked the notch info, very usefull in the field, good work bud!!!
Thanks for watching Zach, much appreciated, did what I could, looking to improve
nice video
Thanks for the visit
i do most of my carving close to the handle
Yes I can see why
Good informational video Joe , thanks for sharing YAH bless brother !
You bet...thanks buddy...blessed safe weekend to you
Nor bad for a city boy! Not bad at all
I try, I try my friend
you did a phenomanal job Brother..much love and Respect
Phenomenal is a powerful word my friend, a valient effort is better...😂😂 but thank you Stef.
Great vid and great work here joe. Im in the same boat, never heard of a try stick till scab put the challenge out. Gonna get out there n find one today
Have fun....dont make my mistake, get a soft thick branch, the Dowel was hard to work with
Great video!! There's a lot to be learned from this one.
Thanks. Hopefully, they will get better, but it was a fun start to new skills and new knife testing
@@JoeSteel1 Just keep having fun and it will get better.
those are great knives, need to find a knife that feels comfortable, my best knife is a cold steel master hunter or a mora garberg
Comfortable knife is an absolute must
Like your work Brother 🇺🇸 🇳🇿
David that makes me very happy to hear, appreciate to be appreciated 👏 🙏🙏🙏👏👏
Good job brother, great vid👍
Thanks for your support brother, 😂 did my best, should of used a soft tree branch though
@@JoeSteel1 yeah, those dowels are tough
Also there's no such thing as cheating.. if you are in a situation you need one of these notches it doesn't matter how you get it😊
Yeah I know just want to learn to do it right...next time no processed wood, real tree branches
