      I'm not a big fan of closed sessions, at all; however, I guess when considering a government is buying private property, or some personal issues, it might be temporary necessary to have closed sessions; however, that said, I agree with the idea that it seems we have way to many closed sessions, both on the local level, state, and even federal level.

      @@schwinn434 you're right, there are a few exceptions. They need to be "in camera" which doesn't mean filmed, but means in closed session. "In Camera" means in chamber, since camera is latin for chamber. One of the biggest reasons is when they are discussing HR issues, about either performance or reviewing other employment issues as it pertains to staff. Councils and boards are the bosses of staff. No organization should have those kinds of discussions open to the public.

  • @a.true.raider924

    The process of "Closed Session" should be unconstitutional on the basis that people have the right know what our elected officials are voting on with full transparency. There should be no secrets in our government; especially at the local level!

      A.true.RAIDER Utah law allows public bodies to hold confidential, non-public discussion for certain specified and limited topics. These include the character, competence or health of an individual; litigation strategy; collective bargaining with employees; and making offers for real estate purchases. We all want transparency, but the reality is that not all matters can or should be aired in public.

    This woman Greenwald loves the sound of her own voice and its tragic that people like this are a part of the decision-making process that affects the general public. Council members are representatives on behalf of the public and I don't know anyone in their right mind who would want to be represented by Greenwald. This woman is digging to slander anyone and anything as shown by her attempts to disclose proprietary information shared in closed session. City of Davis, remove her now.

      What cave do you live in where your local "city council" isn't the closest and most potentially corrupt and uncontrollable level of government you're in closest contact with and most affected by? Or at least would be if you didn't live in that cave? Seeing what city councils, school boards, county commissions and other "local governments" can get away with literally under the noses of citizens not only encourages "higher" government officials to proceed with their "leadership" doing whatever they damned well please but those local government entities are also "factories" for the production of "leaders" who go on to "bigger and better things" at higher levels of government and quite often their assclownery at the local level becomes a resume' enhancing campaign and self-marketing tool for why its a good idea to "get rid of them" by electing them to "higher office".
      And if you think "academic politics' have "low stakes" apparently you either do not have or do not care about your children and the "education" they receive.

    My hairline is thinning and somehow I feel like if I won the last election then I'd be bald already. However, I must say that Ms. Greenwald has a great knowledge of the topics. She scours the information and comes to conclusions that I find is in the best fiscal interest of the community. She may appear flustered in this video but the truth is often not the most polished thing. I understand it can get stressful on the dais, but public office should mean sacrificing time in pursuit of truth.

  • @robroy
    @robroy 14 лет назад +1

    I fret about the divisiveness of this issue. I understand that these 11 minutes of video are not the 11 minutes we would ever want to use to represent the town of Davis. However, Sue does have a point that if she was just allowed to make her points uninterrupted it would have went more smoothly. Don is a smart guy and I think tactically speaking he tries to get Sue to misstep so that she appears like this and he can exert authority.

  • @schwinn434

    I don't understand people running for public office, and then don't want public debate on issues - especially, from other elected individuals (people elected their representatives, so please let representatives speak, their are speaking for hundreds, if not thousands of people). If you time is so value, don't run for public office. I have watched many local government meetings, and there always seems to be a rush to get out the door, especially, if someone is saying something controversial. In a democracy, let people speak their minds. Again, if you don't want to practice free speech, especially in a democratic society, don't run for office, leave meetings that are too long for your liking, or don't attend to begin with. All this is in my humble opinion, of course - an opinion which is no better, or worse, than anyone else's opinion. And, if people don't like their representatives speech, they can vote them out of office come next election, or even have a re-call vote to remove them. Also, many meetings, like this one, are video taped, and most people can just fast forward through speeches, or comments they don't want to hear; yet, IMHO, again: many things you don't want to hear are actually educational- in order to become well informed, in general.

    Why are comments being removed by authors. I do not like the redacted status of this conversation right now. I also do not like "closed sessions." When I sat on a governing board we used them very sparingly. To the public closed sessions tend to reek of shadiness. And I do not blame them because as a member of the public on this issue I also detect the stench. It would be nice to be able to actually see the record of what is being sited by the representatives so the truth can ring free.
