  • Of the five piano concertos written by Prokofiev, the third piano concerto has garnered the greatest popularity and critical acclaim. The concerto radiates a crisp vitality that testifies to Prokofiev's inventive prowess in punctuating lyrical passages with witty dissonances, while maintaining a balanced partnership between the soloist and orchestra. Unlike the examples of piano concertos set by many of Prokofiev's Romantic forebears, the orchestra rises above subsidiary accompaniment to play a very active part in this work.
    0:00 - Andante - Allegro

    Such a brilliant recording. Ashkenasy is my favorite pianist in these wonderful concertos. I wonder how much Kissin learned from him

    He was such a genius... better than Rachmaninoff, even Shostakovich, to me.

      @@cubycube9924 Nah it sucks that Rach and Shosty are getting more recognition than Prokofiev. I find Prok's music to be much more unique and engaging than the other 2's

      @CubyCube 😂 I understand, It was a stupid comment.
      but you know, who can argue about who's better or not?
      They just have their own great music.

      @@cubycube9924 its pretty much objective tho. Prokofiev is just so much more creative and interesting than those two.

    Prokofiev's own 1932 recording is outstanding. And live performances by the young and brilliant Alexander Malofeev are closer to Prokofiev's own performance than this recording.

      Please listen to how he used the theme.
      He uses the same theme again and again, but it sounds different from time to time.
      And how brilliant the way he changed theme is!

      I think you should rewind a few decades in music history and get used to the harmonic language of people like Liszt, Wagner and co. before you tackle Prokofiev. Jumping straight to Prokofiev without getting your ears accustomed to his harmonies first is a big mistake
