Yuja Wang is in a class of her own. Claudio Abbado in a class of his own. We'll miss him. And Prokofiev in a class of his own. The three of them together. Wow! The orchestra was terrific.
+darren motise I agree with +Beenet Markel about Abbado. You tend to lose sight of his contribution because of his lack of ego. He inspired musicians rather than dictating to them. This was especially true of the young Yuja Wang. He recognized her mature musical intelligence (even at such a young age) and encouraged Yuja to express herself freely, something I doubt she would have had the nerve to do with most distinguished conductors. Claudio's genius here is his ability to listen to what Yuja is trying to achieve and transmit to the orchestra what they should be doing to follow Yuja's lead. It is difficult to think of another conductor able to do this as skillfully, and the result is an outstanding performance by all concerned. Abbado was probably Yuja's favorite conductor, and she was devastated to learn of his passing. On the audience reaction, I do not think they were unappreciative. The Swiss are not as demonstrative as, say, the Americans. By all accounts, the reviews of the performance were uniformly extremely positive.
@@djmotise I too once thought being a conductor wasn't difficult. Maybe you can watch Benjamin Zander's conducting masterclasses and you'll understand the difference a greact conductor makes👍🏻
We can all have our favourite performances of this piece. For me, Yuja's talent is huge and as she matures she will bring so much more to pieces like this. I much prefer this concerto to some of the more standard over performed works.
Yuja Wang, si belle femme, si brillante et subtile et intelligente interprète au piano, avec notre grand Chef d’orchestre (hélas parti): quel bonheur de voir et écouter cette interprétation ! Il y a 15 ans.
It is often easy to forget the author of this work when it is performed so beautifully. Nevertheless, it is a genuine privilege to see this level of ability combined with that tender awareness rendered by exquisite hands and their exquisite owner.

I studied this piece in a music class in Vienna in 1974, and then watched the live performance a week later. Ms. Wang was phenomenal, the music is fabulous. Bravo. Shame on the audience! They obviously don't appreciate greatness.
I remember watching on RUclips Ms Kyung Wha Chung playing the Tchaikovsky violin concerto in Dublin in 1972 when she was 23-24. That was probably her most magnificent performance of this concert if not the most magnificent among of all violinists. Yet the audience only gave her a lukewarm applause. On this performance, Ms Wang was only 22-23, just about in the same age as Ms Chung at the time.
There is nothing YuJa does that doesn't thrill me. As for others, the Japanese have a saying, "Ten people, ten colors". Someone else's opinion can't deplete any of the joy i have watching YuJa play, or talk.
This gal is the "treasure of the 21st century". May God and his angels always watch over her---and guide her footsteps [Jeremiah 10:23 & Isaiah 54:13]. It was a divine power that created a soul like hers!
its funny how I grew up on hiphop and never knew nothing about orchestral music and how over the years my musical goo has expanded from Pop, Dance Hall, Reggae, HipHop, RnB, and Orchestral music. This is off the chain.
2nd movement of this concerto is my favorite Prokofiev missive. It's him at his playful, puckish, tongue-in-cheek best. Never tire of hearing it. Thanks Yuja, Maestro Abbado, and the Lucerne Festival Players!
The violin player sitting right behind the first violin, a blonde woman, is a sensational musician. She is one of the founders of the Spira Mirabilis concept, "an orchestra without conductor". Brilliant work, Lorenza Borrani!
Prokofiev is a sort of anomaly - his music is like fingers and music running Sorcerer's Apprentice amok. His patterns are specific and ironically while the music is tonally modern, it is not complex and actually fairly easy to memorize - that being a marvel in itself. Yuja does a splendid job with this - I've heard this 100's of times and this time, I just can't turn it off. I think Yuja is absolutely stunning. She is as beautiful as her music - and I want to see more of both!
Truly marvelous pianism. Her personality - wedded to this composer's music, evokes many visions for me - some of historical events, some of personal experience...I plan to return many times to this performance. On another topic,I find the intrusion of ads insulting personally, and degrading to the performance- and particularly, a performance of this magnitude! I guess the positive that comes out of this, is that I resolve with each intrusion to purchase fewer and fewer "things." Such music making as this galvanizes the conviction...
thomas thompson Don't take Dudamel out of the mix! He and Yuja recorded the Rach 3rd and Prokofiev 2nd in ONE DAY in Caracas! That recording is astounding, sublime and fiery! Check it out Deutsche Gramophone
Of course, you're quite right, and it's silly, really, to talk about the "greatest" (except perhaps for Ali) because there's so much extraordinary talent out there. Abbado was of course very sick with the cancer that would later kill him when he conducted this in 2009. That he was able to wring that fine a performance out of his players (and also Ms. Wang) simply astonishes me.
searched "Bartok concerto 3" -- this comes up, top page hit for this search?? I didn't read carefully. So, thought Yuja Wang was about to play Barok 3. I asked myself, "Can Yuja Wang play Bartok??" Answer: No she can't. But she can play Prokofiev mighty finely indeed! ;) Always love her vibrant, powerful, and musically exciting performances of Prokofiev.
Though I don't like her interpretation of Mendelssohn's piano concerto No.1, Yuja Wang's performance of Prokofiev's pc 3 is truly great and it's one of my favorite performances.
I have always liked Prokofiev, and his Piano Concerto No. 3 is my favorite. I have heard this concerto played live at least three times and, when played well, the audience is on its feet at the fiery conclusion. Who ARE these people who barely stir when the passionate, brilliant Yuja, clearly exhausted, concludes her performance? I've never seen such dispassionate, disinterested people. Why did they even bother leaving their homes?
Jac Harris My dear.....this is Switzerland....this is probably the most excited they have got in years.....I think to get Prokofiev right you must be Russian Ukranian or from around this area......the interpretation lacks depth (in my humble opinion).....but not so much to get this reaction from the crowd
Mazac Tal ok , can you be precise ? Put that in technical musical language. What might "depth" be? As a professional musician, i'm unfamiliar with the term.
Prokofiev was a genius.
Maybe because this piano concerto was written by Prokofiev? 😂

Thanks Yuja, Maestro Abbado,
and the Lucerne Festival Players!
This is the first time I've been blown away by the camera work and editing of a concert. Great work on top on fantastic music.
You could not ask for a finer interpretation - what joy in the playing, and such precision.
The violin player sitting right behind the first violin, a blonde woman, is a sensational musician. She is one of the founders of the Spira Mirabilis concept, "an orchestra without conductor". Brilliant work, Lorenza Borrani!
Yuja Wang has mastered EVERY kind of music.
I love this performance. Concertmaster's face expresses my own emotions each time I hear it.
SHEER DELIGHT IN TEMPOS FULL OF GRACE, POWER & NOBILITY
Prokofiev is a sort of anomaly - his music is like fingers and music running Sorcerer's Apprentice amok. His patterns are specific and ironically while the music is tonally modern, it is not complex and actually fairly easy to memorize - that being a marvel in itself.
Yuja does a splendid job with this - I've heard this 100's of times and this time, I just can't turn it off.
I think Yuja is absolutely stunning. She is as beautiful as her music - and I want to see more of both!
A magical, utterly amazing, jaw droppingly good composition! It's played superbly here, too.
This is the best performance of this concerto of this century..Thank you..John Rapp
26:15 - the climax.
That's the best piece he'd written. I can listen to it all day long.
Absolutely Outstanding! BRAVO!
BRAVO YUJA!!! Hermosa Dama y Gran Pianista. Te Amo!
This is, quite simply, a total joy to behold! Wonderful!
Truly marvelous pianism. Her personality - wedded to this composer's music, evokes many visions for me - some of historical events, some of personal experience...I plan to return many times to this performance.
On another topic,I find the intrusion of ads insulting personally, and degrading to the performance- and particularly, a performance
of this magnitude! I guess the positive that comes out of this, is that I resolve
with each intrusion to purchase fewer and fewer "things." Such music making as this
galvanizes the conviction...
Claudio Abbado might well be the greatest conductor we've ever had. This is a fine perfomance.
thomas thompson Don't take Dudamel out of the mix!
Yuja Wang in the houuuuuse!!
such question. wow.
Me ha dejado impresionado la ejecución de este Piano Concerto.
Obrigado
searched "Bartok concerto 3" -- this comes up, top page hit for this search?? I didn't read carefully. So, thought Yuja Wang was about to play Barok 3. I asked myself, "Can Yuja Wang play Bartok??" Answer: No she can't. But she can play Prokofiev mighty finely indeed! ;) Always love her vibrant, powerful, and musically exciting performances of Prokofiev.

Hello from Australia. One of my most favorite pieces of of music ever. And wonderfully played. Thank you.
YUYA WANG , YOU ARE THE BEST ! ...
No cap this is the best piano concerto ever
Jac Harris: yeah, maybe they're too lazy to clap...
Felix Mendelssohn I agree! BTW, big fan of your music Felix - but maybe put some beatbox in your next tune? It would be killer.
Wonderful piece, stunning performance, and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra absolutely great. Bravi !
