The youth orchestra of Suncheon, a small city in Korea, is supposed to perform this beautiful music this coming June. Happily, my two sons are in the orchestra. This music might be beyond them. Still, it's just adorable to see them practice over and over again, and listen to it even while they're sleeping every single day. The conductor of the youth orchestra is Mr.Seo Kyeong-wook, a genuine artist. All the members really respect him and so do their parents. We are so grateful to him. I wish the city officials would think this way.

Therefore I appreciate when we sitting at home with our laptops and our headphones have the opportunity to be a part of the public reaction. Like here, we can follow this till the end, even the applause, Thank you! And this uptaking is of course a gem!

The most beautiful thing in Mahler's music and in particular in his first symphony is this kind of mistic tension that hides in apparent simplictiy, both melodically and armonically speaking, that leads, usually in an unexpected way, to the main themes (the real proof of his genius) of the symphony itself. Mahler's first is made up of gems floating in a deep, misterious ocean. And of course that's the reason for wich listening to Mahler requires so much concentration and passion. Mahler's music is expression of life in all its reality and in all its cruelty and in that sense this symphony is a real manifesto of the revolution carried out by Mahler and Mahler alone.
A big bravo to Claudio Abbado wich, as usual, is able to capture the composer's intentions with absolute sensibility. Thank you for everything Maestro.

+Andrea Iudica The expressions of joy from the musician are unmistakable: tangible connections in the earthy Ländler. Mahler touches our true nature, perhaps the essence of Abbado's gift. This performance should be widely known in civilised culture.
(I enjoyed your comment so much I made one of my own.)

+Andrea Iudica Thank you for a wonderful comment. Having performed this First Sym from a young age, I am just beginning to see what it means. " Mahler's music is expression of life in all its reality and in all its cruelty". Yes. The cruelty is there like salt in chocolate. But bitter still.

I once was speaking to John Williams & he referred to his Star Wars movies soundtracks as "My little compositions" compared to Mahlers "Full & complete symphonies". John is always humble but as a musician, the genius to write a symphony that goes for about a hour is pure musical genius, in my opinion.

There are few things that sound as good as a great orchestra playing Mahler round midnight - and this one, well I'm not an expert but you don't have to be one to see that they've NAILED IT !!
Of course they're all elite musicians, but the "Maestro" has them all on a string!!
Claudio Abbado became a very charismatic conductor in the later stages of his career. And he knows his Mahler.
    Bravissimo!!!

i find Mahler's music rich in musical ideas..beautiful gems that you can spend hours agonisingly recalling (agonising because you cannot whistle them or hum them really, because of the contrasting tones, u simply have to endure them since they don't leave ur head the whole day!)...and the atmosphere! Something like deep-forest gnomes, nymphs, satyrs or whatever doing their stuff contentedly, undisturbed..

Ladies and gentlemen, you are going to have the hugest honour to attend the greatest, unrepeatable (but always improvable) collective event in mankind history so far... sorry, no longer live and in presence! So..., and anyway, fasten your seat belt and hold on at the top of your individual enduring tightness in order to avoid being swept away by the touching vertigoes... Thank you for paying your kind attention but, much more, to the composer Gustav Mahler, the conductor Claudio Abbado, and all female and male members of the orchestra, the technicians, and the very lucky audience! Roughly three seconds just before the Big Bang... It is loud and clear enough? I'm so glad to wish you the best listening experience, for which you can't do without thoroughly and soakedly diving inside...

Without wishing to sound trivial especially as a person who has been devoted to Mahler for 40 years and who hopes to leave this world to the Chorus Mysticus from the 8th Symphony, the opening bars of this Symphony always seem to take me out of this world and I almost say "Space, the final frontier....". Mahler's music for me encompasses the whole world and changes me every time I listen to it. This is an excellent performance. I am not always of fan of Abbado as a conductor of Mahler (Solti is among my favourites)but here he really is outstanding. I noticed Simon Rattle in the audience which says something (he's another great conductor of Mahler).

I can't believe no one is talking about the moment at 55:38. It's such a gorgeous moment among gorgeous moments. Such an intense sadness that is somehow so uplifting. This is why I listen to Mahler. He elevates me. His genius in conveying emotion is like nothing else. And you can see how Abbaddo feels just the same, waving frantically because of the intense emotions that the section projects. Electrifying. Magnanimous. Sensational

Magnificent piece of music. You can immediately see that the conductor and orchestra are in harmony. Brilliant, excellent and beautiful.

I salute Claudio Abbado, may he rest in peace. Also, Sir Simon Rattle in the audience!

Rattle in the audience!!!! Get real! there to see what he can learn! NO comparison to the late Abbado a conductor in name only, an insult to Abbado to even mention Rattle.

What a ridiculous statement to contrive.

The second sentence is nothing but a shame.
Cool linguistic maneuver but nothing but a shame.

For my taste the best Mahler's symphony with one of the giants orchestra conductors in the last times, thanks for sharing!

To think that Mahler was shunned by his friends after the first performance! They wouldn't look him in the eye! He knew then that his music would not be his living. He'd have to conduct. Oh how amazed he would be to see how he is embraced by the world today. Such a sad and great story.

True! But do remember, the version Mahler's friends heard did not resemble the Symphony No. 1 we know today by any means. It was revised extensively. I wonder where we can hear the original Mahler 1...maybe it's not even in existence anymore.

They probably heard a disastrous performance. I remember buying a version of this on cassette way back when, by some unknown conductor and orchestra. It was noise. It was horrible! I can't imagine how it must feel for a composer to have his/her work destroyed in performance. I'm lucky I'm a poet (unknown/Ignotus). Nobody can wreck my stuff ! :)

+Zachary Larson But he did conduct and it's well known that the irony of the third movement was just incomprehensible to the audiennce. They weren't used to expressions of this sort. emotionalism. Plus other of his works were equally dismissed. He had a hard time of it. Not uncommon with such originality.

The same applies to Beethoven, his original works were truly a mess, and it took years for him to be properly recognized after his death, it also took much revision, reworking and refining of his pieces that allowed for proper hearing.

Gustav Mahler is one of the highlights of the Victorian age. Great that he lived on into Edwardian times and beyond as his music will be listened to forever!
