Spectacular. No matter how many times I hear this symphony, I still get chills when the horn players stand "so as to drown out everything…even the trumpets."
This is great!! I love Fabio Luisi's interpretation is fantastic! As a horn player, I enjoy seeing the climax of the Finale being played by the 7/8 horns without support from a trumpet and trombone as Mahler himself placed in the score as an option. I often wonder why Mahler did not utilize 7-8 Wagner tubas instead of standard horns in this passage. Anyone who has heard the Universal Studios fanfare cannot tell the difference between the horn and the tuben until they know exactly where one ends and the other begins and even then it is not so obvious except the tuben project more. My graduate horn professor often referred to these tuben as 'horns on steroids'. I would love to see a performance of this Symphony where the horn players would put down the horns and take up the tuben for these last several minutes of this work. I really do believe Mahler would approve.
@@scottmiller6495 What's with the multiple exclamation marks? One is more than sufficient! And so what? I belong to those many and I still think the 1st is heavily overperformed and overrecorded.
Nice interpretation of one of my favourite composers, the feeling is just wow, a mix of different emotions. That's why I love Mahler, Rachmaninov and Wagner.
So true. Same tremendous video quality in Mahler 2, also in the same magnificent hall in Munich, conducted by the Russian guy, Valery Gergiev, who lost his position there because of the Ukraine war
Bravo! Great interpretation, especially the account of the trio-very characterful. And based on the pictures I’ve seen Maestro Luisi looks like Mahler. 👏👏👏👏♥️🎶🎻🎵
Try "Rafael Kubelik Mahler 1" with the Bavarian Symphony Orchestra on youtube. The studio version (Deutsche Grammophon) is even better. Many, including me, regard his interpretation as the best version.
Don't be misunderstood. This version with Luisi and the Staatskapelle Dresden is one of the best I've heard. I just wanted to check some parts of the symphony and ended in listening to almost everything. And everything was done with precision and perfect expression. So, the applause at the end was very well earned.
Fabio Luisi is currently the chief conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Japan, so I have listened to his performances many times. And I can hear all of his performances sound like opera. Even Brahms and Beethoven. But this performance sounds like a symphony. He's a great conductor!
Like most conductors he slows down at (in this performance) 44:46-45:03 even though the score is marked "a tempo." This destroys the contrast with the later recurrences of the motif, when the score does indicate a change in tempo. Jascha Horenstein is one of the few who follows the score at this point, and the movement benefits tremendously.
I find the termpi in this performance often inexplicable. He slows and speeds the scherzo very oddly, bringing it almost to a halt and then zooming back at breakneck speed. In the third movement when the clarinets break into the 'parodie', the score is marked 'nicht schleppen', which Maestro Luisi interprets as 'race away so fast it's like a new piece of music has begun'. This performance has lovely moments, but the symphony's shape is lost with all the odd tempi.
GRACIAS MAHLER Y GRACIAS DW CLASSICAL MUSIC.
Certainly not a metronome conductor! As noted by many below, style, knowledge, interpretation and delivery are variable and personal. I enjoy the variety of comments of the conductors and orchestras noted below. I would be pleased to listen to, and see many of the conductors and orchestras not on you tube who are/were the 'greats' of their time if they did Mahler. I wonder what Mahler would say in this and other postings if he were able to comment.
2022.5.1 3:48🌿thanks I was awake halfway. Symphony No. 1 in D major (1884-88) - The subtitle "Giant" derived from Jean Paul's novel has finally been deleted by Mahler himself.
Interesting how there seems to be no joy written on the musician's faces. Dresden thing? Touring thing? Conductor thing? The ghost of Celi hanging in the hall, threatening to fire anyone who screws up on the spot?
I can't help seeing in this Italian conductor some mimicry of Bernstein's gymnastics and hyper-animated gesticulation on the podium, even embellished by Fabio Luisi thanks to the turbulence in his long, flowing romantic hair style. All those younger directors have studied Bernstein's antics in his performances very carefully. By contrast, you see none of this in Valery Gergiev's interpreting Mahler.
Original hatte das Mahler als Gruppensolo gedacht. Aber es klang so schlecht dass er es mit einem Bass machen wollte, Mahler hat das selbst geändert. Aber Bravo für Kontrabass Gruppen! Sauber und schöne Linie!

This brother is a monster. How does he get his bands to play so well??????????!!!!????? Damn!
This is the oldest band in the world. They've been around for 500 years. It's very hard to make them play *NOT* well.

To watch Maestro Luisi attack the finale was quite something! By the way, the horn theme in the finale was inspired by Hans Rott.
