  • The question is should you buy a 2004-2008 F150?
    I own two 2004 Ford F150's one is a supercab 5.4 V8 Triton 4x4 and the other standard cab 4.6 2wd.
    I have always loved the look of the 11th Gen F150's aka 2004-2008 F150's and there is a lot of information out there about them. I bought my supercab 3 years ago and it was going to be my first experience with the 5.4 3v engines and a ton of videos were making me pretty nervous but I decided to take the risk and get it anyways. Watch the video to see if you should buy an 04-08 F150.

      Hey man, I just bought a 2006 F150 5.4 Triton FX4 lifted, with 140k miles, for 4k. it does needs a tune up. Do you think this was a good price? Also, how much do you think its a reasonable price for a tune up that only requires changing the sparkplugs, coils, fuel filter, PCV Valve, and camshaft would be?

    • @JustKingAdrian
      @JustKingAdrian  Год назад

      @@juanagudelo409 I think that's a fair price just based off the truck and mileage. I paid $4,500 for this one bone stock and a little rough around the edges a little over 2 years ago. The price of a tune up is hard to say. What state are you in? What makes you want to do the camshafts? The spark plugs, coils, fuel filter are an easier job. The hardest out of those is the spark plugs because these trucks have a history of them breaking off. Hopefully they have been changed before and you don't have the original two piece ones.

    • @juanagudelo409
      @juanagudelo409 Год назад

      @Just King Adrian Hey man, thanks for the reply! The original owner said that it does need a tune-up since the check engine light is on. I did do a scan on the truck, and it's telling me that a few cylinders are misfiring. I currently reside in NY. I found a guy who will do the job for me (parts not included) for bout $130. I think that's a reasonable price, to be honest. I had 1 shop try to charge me $500 without parts being included... I just looked at them and laughed.

      Just fyi... you REALLY need to replace the factory oil pump in order for this engine to be reliable. And based on that dieseling, you're going to have to replace your cam phasers as well. Melling makes an upgraded pump for this truck that solves this motor's Achilles heel! The problem is, the entire timing system, from cam phasers for the vvt, to solenoids, to timing chain tensioners, all run off of oil pressure and the factory pump is terrible! It won't hold pressure because the back plate on the pump flexes when warm and under pressure, leaking oil out the back and dropping the oil pressure below what is necessary for proper operation. When you get your timing chain cover off, don't be surprised if you find your tensioners have failed and your timing chain guides are broken. Every 5.4 owner should replace the oil pump, timing chains, timing chain guides and tensioners, cam phasers, and solenoids. Only the Melling pump needs to be name brand or OEM, at least in my experience. Probably $600 or so in parts, a couple days labor for a novice, and all you'll hear for the next couple hundred thousand miles.... is the faint clicking of valves opening and closing, and the big ass fan! Lol.

  • @jakemiller4089
    @jakemiller4089 11 месяцев назад +47

    I really hope we can get this up-voted so more people can read it! THIS MOTOR CAN BE AMAZING! However, if you do any repairs on the timing system without replacing the oil pump.... you're throwing your money away! In fact.... if you buy this truck and don't replace the oil pump..... you're throwing your money away! The timing system runs off of oil pressure and the factory pump is absolute trash and doesn't hold pressure! You NEED the upgraded Melling oil pump!

Recently i painted two full cans of tremclad black on underside to stop corrosion... plus it looks sharp gloss black. And pulled out all interior and put dyna mat allover whole cab and one layer of underlay. Makes that truck a few levels quieter. Now i have sound system at lower levels because i dont hear road or exhaust. All o can really hear easily is wind noise up front and distant tailpipe growel out back. Love the 11 series.

    I have an 07 and loved it since I bought it in 2016. 150k miles at purchase and now has 320k+. Yes 2 timing jobs, but has been a great truck. I agree with all your comments and especially your compliments. Drives and handles much better than my 2000 expedition. I sometimes get envious about newer trucks, and legitimately so, but I would hate to not be as pleased overall as I have been with this one. My mechanic just recently replaced all timing parts and said he was skeptical about the mileage. When he got into the engine, he was so impressed and surprised that the inside was still so clean and in great shape. He even sent me pics. lol. That was at 320k. I appreciate your video and share your love for the truck. Good job sir!

      @@gofishinginternational1865 I'm being 100% honest here. I take care of my truck; change the oil on time, etc, etc, and I've never had a problem with it. I bought it in 2015 with about 120k miles in it, and about a year later it ran a bit rough. My mechanic told me he thought the spark plugs needed replacing which they should've been at 100k miles. So, I replaced them and everything smoothed out. I now have new, hotter ignition coils, a larger throttle body, and a larger MAF. Next I'm upgrading the exhaust to True Dual exhaust with long tube headers with an X pipe and Dynomax Turbo Mufflers -- after that it's just some new paint. 😎

Because the plugs were old and should've been replaced as part of a complete 100k mile, bumper-to-bumper tune-up service, but weren't (until I got the truck) the truck ran rough and shook in low gear. Once the plugs were replaced the problem was gone and the truck ran great -- and still does. I bought it with 120k miles on it in 2015 and now have 240k miles on it in 2023.

There's still some things I need to chase down like my horn not working and my ABS/E-Brake light on and the cats are fouled from a misfire that I fixed. I have a 2006 quad cab with the 5.4 engine. I bought it used a few years ago with 145k miles on it. All from the original owner who was meticulous with maintenance. It now has 180k. When I bought it I had the spark plugs swapped out to avoid the common issue of spark plugs freezing in the block and then breaking off when you try to remove them. From what I have read, the engine reliability issues stem from poor maintenance (oil changes) as the chain guides and phazers are sensative to oil quality. The recommended oil is 5w-20 but most people use 5w-30 as the recommended thinner oil was used to meet MPG numbers. Apart from replacing a few suspension components, I have had no issues with the truck at all. Prior trucks were Chevys that would have been fine, but the Active Fuel Management in the engines causes premature wear and the 4L60E transmissions used in the trucks blowing up after 100k miles.

    I have had good luck with my 2005 XLT 5.4. i am the 3rd owner . 1st owner sold it to a buddy with 99'000. both prior owners kept all maintenance records. i picked it up with 148'000. i ran it until its current 203'000. it is currently sitting with a blown trans. suspected shift solenoids with fingers crossed . did the work and now i'm confident the snap ring groove has snapped the forward clutch assembly. Still no forward lockup in 1'2'3'OD still works . i paid $9'000 and its been awesome until the current trans issue. i do not know if i should keep it or dump it ? I do not have the money to get a new trans . i have the current trans ready to drop but i just do not know what to do. if i dump it as is i'm gonna take a big loss on any return but i just do not have the money for a trans .
    The truck breaking down when it did has really screwed up my work situation. I was in the first year of being self employed and doing everything wrong when it came to starting a business. i was making it work and was starting to pick up steam. Now i have been riding a bicycle to work a few different hourly jobs close to home. y wife and i own a home in CO but have Zero family in the area. The wife's work schedule does not permit her driving me to a better job or me taking the other vehicle. I just found out i am going to be a father in about 7 months. WHAT DO I DO? I love my truck and don't want to dump it for basically nothing but i need a ride ASAP. if anyone reads this and has anything to weigh in with i could really use some advice. I just do not have anyone in my life that can help me make a logical decision. right now 'm thinking dump the truck and hopefully get something that will get me to work thru the winter and pray to God i can afford something reliable before my 1st child is born .

    I have the same truck but mine is a FX4 with leather. the super cab short box is a great configuration and somewhat hard to find. I absolutely love my truck, if I ever have trouble with the engine I’ve been debating a Coyote conversion but a fresh 5.4 could be the way to go because it wouldn’t require mods.

    So does the 4.6 have the same issues or is it a more reliable option to the 5.4 I saw one one a lot that was clean with 162k miles on it they are asking $6,900 for it So im just doing research but I find more videos on the 5.4 than the 4.6 im just trying to find out if the 4.6 is more reliable. I don't want to spend close to 7k on a truck then immediately spend a few more just to drive it so thats why im asking around.
    Also along with the oil pump how much would all the timing components cost me if I did it myself?

      @JustKingAdrian  Год назад

      Personally I don’t think so. I have a 4.6 in my other 2004 and with a cold air intake, exhaust and programmer I feel like it’s good enough power compared to the 5.4. I do feel the 5.4 has a little more torque but that could just be the tire size difference since I’m on 37” tires with my 4.6 and 32” tires on the 5.4 but I don’t ever really mash the pedal in the 5.4 since it’s higher mileage. I’m gonna try headers and exhaust soon on the 4.6 and maybe a regear and see how it feels. The 5.4’s also are known to have oil pressure issues and timing chain problems.
